Do you have the back seats fitted, if so argue the point with them. Mines rego'd as a sedan

True, with my ex's we had to hammer it into them that it was not a ute and got it sorted in the end. But yes, when doing rego i have been told by rta that they are classed as utes. Like JC says, remind them of the back seats and they might start to act like they know what they are talking about and get it sorted for you.

It is not only subject to Sierra's also, my first 4by was a Diahatsu scat with removable hard top wich they classed as a ute with canopy:crazy:. Took a bit to change it but got that sorted aswell.

They know the difference but it is based on old terminology that hasn't been updated, it refers to them as being utility vehicles not utes.

g'day bloke, I had the same problem with my sierra. My wifes Rav4 is cheaper to register than my zook. Came down to being released as a utility when brought into australia by suzuki. Less restrictions on rollover protection when classified as a utility. The good thing in Victoria is that it means there is a letter G on the rego sticker so technically you can park in loading zones.

My hard top is registered as a panel van :D ...... it's not that great to sleep in the back of though, LOL

qld you pay rego per cylinder not the type of vehicle it is.

This is similar to a thread on NSW suzuki 4x4 site - Basically it was cheaper for Suzuki to import them as utes originally, thus keep the sale price down a bit.
It is also easier to modify a ute than a wagon or whatever else it would be classed as, so there is an upside.
Plus, you can use loading zones too!

I had the same problem a few years ago with a 80 series landcruiser (7seats). When rego came in ( 1st time for me since owning it) and it had it down a panel van which a nearly $100 dearer. I went to RTA and after arguing with the guy at the desk and him getting his boss to speak to. It got changed to a station wagon. Much happier and neraly $100 richer for me.
I had my 80series plated as a 9 seater recently and the sheila at RTA couldnt get it thru her head that 3 rows of seats with 3 seats per row make it 9 . She kept trying to tell me it was 2 front 3 rear and 2 back only .She eventually saw it my way when we went thru the amount of seatbelts in it.:) they could have probably hired a chimp to do her job except it would have got bored
