Having been an owner for 4 months of a 99 rodeo 3.2lt V6 crew cab I was wondering what other owners use in the engine oil department.
Mine has about 117000kms on the clock and when I purchased it it had a Valvoline 10W-30 synthetic oil but as it had done about 6000kms since its last service and down to about half way on the dip stick thought the oil may be a bit thin. So when I serviced it I used Valvoline Engine Armour 15W-40 oil and it has used about 400ml in 5000kms. So now I am going to use Valvoline XLD Plus 20W-50 which is the correct grade according to the book (and recommended by Valvoline).
As I have read other forums regarding oil usage in rodeo's was wondering if anyone had tried different oils and had success in minimizing usage.

mmmmmmmmm...... I don't own a rodeo but I would assume that if you are losing that much oil, there could be a problem...
My 98 courier, does not use any oil between changes....
Where is it all going??

I have spoken to a couple of people on another forum about this and my usage seems to be fairly common to the point where one reply said that his usage was similar and he knew he would use more in summer.

Give some oil recommended for older engines a try....I used to use it all the time in petrol motors old or new....just a thought...cheers...

Mine uses a fair bit of oil. Especially under load or on long trips. I'd use about 1/2 to 2/3 the dip stick measure in 4000k.
I'm running Castrol GTX2 20W-50
I can't see it leaking anywhere, so I'm pretty sure it gets burnt. Not in massive clouds out the back but enough to use it up over time.

Yeah. Mine has no leaks either so I guess it is burnt during combustion.
But if you read some American forums they say that there was an issue with the size of the holes in the piston rings in regard to the fact that the oil does not drain back quick enough and apparently burns in combustion( I'm not a mechanic).
Different guys in the USA have tried different oils with some kind of success but some of the brands I have not heard of so was looking for local knowledge.
I am probably a bit paranoid as in all my years of driving cant recall ever owning a vehicle that uses oil (for no reason).

So now I am going to use Valvoline XLD Plus 20W-50 which is the correct grade according to the book (and recommended by Valvoline).
SG or SH grade 20W-50 is right, or 15w-40 for snow or very cold climate area's.
0.5 - 1.0 litre is normal oil use for every 10,000kms on these engines.
If your using more than that every 10K you have a problem or you are driving it very hard or towing all the time.

We had about 20 of these in the fleet at work at one stage.
They all seemed to use oil between changes, 1/2 litre was about normal.
I used to run 20/50 penrite from memory in the V6 i had for a couple of years.
Cheers,
Dale
