View Full Version : Boofs Wifes Prado
With my growing family and the addition of a 3rd boy last year, the Hilux has been getting a little too tight for long trips. We did look at selling the Hilux but I really didnt want too. My wife came to the rescue offering to sell her Subaru Liberty and replace it with a Prado. So before she could change her mind I started looking for one. Found a nice one did the deal and bought it home last night.
Heres a few pics some from the yard and some from the garage.

At this stage it will stay very road orientated and will not see any 4wd parks. I have spoken to Ryano at Fourbys about a few mods :D
At this stage it will be limited 2" lift, slightly larger than original A/T style tyre, dual batteries and ERPS. Still to be decided is if the tyres will be on the standard 17s or a new set of 18s would love 20s but have been told no. :(
We are hoping to make a High Country trip in the second half of next year so that should be a good excuse for dual lockers :D

Hey mate, nice looking car.
Does the Prado really have much more space than the liberty?
Oh, was the liberty a sedan?
Either way, nice car, congrats.
Yes mate the liberty was sedan, had no towbar and no low range, was also slightly lower with 16" alloys and low profile tyres. Not exactly the greatest combination for dirt roads and off road touring :D
This one will be for touring duties, and light offroad work. Its also a 8 seater so gives us the ability to pick up interstate relatives when they fly in for visits, take the kids mates when needed also. The boot is also a lot larger and easier for the wife to put in the young fellas BMX race bike and with BJ starting next year she will need to be able to carry two.

Make it a proper shopping trolley and go the 20inch rims - you know you want to.
Better still - you need to go for a set of spinners.

I will leave it on Petrol once Mel learns that it doesnt need full throttle everywhere it shouldnt cost much to run from what I have seen and heard.

Boof I was thinking about how you could justify 20 inch rims and low profile tyres to the boss today.
Just tell her that with the big bling rims on it will make you think twice about where you take it as you wouldn't want to scratch them or kill a tyre. By doing this she will then go yeah ok put them on because in her mind she will be thinking "sweet this will mean my car will stay clean and damamge free".
Good looking buy Boof.
I was glad to hear you weren't selling the lux as even though I'm a Nissan man, that lux of yours in one classy piece of work
Hopefully all will be well with the Mrs & I'll get to see it on the High Country trip ;)

Mate, let us know when your down here for that High Country trip, as maybe we and some others can hook up and make an event out of it?
R u bringing your hilux down too or just coming in the prado?
with a 2" lift, you can fit 275/70x17's on those stock rims, 285's rub on the upper control arms, unless you run a spacer or get a different offset wheel. just thought I'd let ya know.

Nice looking Prado, same model as mine, not bad on the fuel but if your missus is like me with the pedal, then it may cost a lot :)
Saying that, towed a camper trailer down south from Perth, and then did a lot of touring and went very well with fuel.

Yeh mate its getting a 2" lift but the tyres will only be A/Ts no sense putting anything more aggressive on it. The High Country trip next year will be in the Prado so it wont be anything too hard or damaging ;)

A lot more than 17s but the main problem is unless you go 33" or larger you are restricted to passenger tyre construction which is pointless for dirt roads etc. Its booked in for some work next week but we will be sticking with the stock rims and just an A/T tyre.
good stuff boof, glad to see you are keeping the lux, dont mind prados either good stuff ;D
Cheers Nate.
Its booked into Fourbys tomorrow for its mods. We decided to go 2" lift, rust protection, dual batteries and the next size up STTs. I will get pics up once the mods are all done. :D

Nah mate to get the ATZs with the trick sidewalls I needed to go a 33" and 18" or larger rim. The problem is unless I do a 3.5" lift they and stuff around the will scrub and hit. Not a problem if it was mine but not for the wife, this way the gearing and speedo etc are not as much of a drama either. After driving it around I am hesitatant to lose the nice ride and stuff that it has. The Hilux is my rough and noisy truck (at least until the 85 is finished) and I dont want to over mod this one.

Considering its contant 4wd, i'll bet that she DOES notice they're there!;)
sorry, couldn't help myself, had to say something about that comment, it's sorta only partially correct. it would be more correct to say it's constant all-wheel drive with 4wd on command, difference being that it has a centre diff-lock, basically the centre diff-lock just turns it into a normal four-wheel drive, locking front and rear driveshafts together.
anyway, you'll love the prado boof, if it's anything like my old man's (98 RV) it will cruise the sand on double island just as easily as it does on the highway getting there. he hasn't taken it bush yet so i can't comment there. anyway, good stuff:thumb:

Yeh mate to be honest not sure it will be a more budget orientated build to start with and we will see where it goes from there. The problem with using the 98 for comps is by the time its setup it will owe me even more money and be getting too expensive to thrash the crap out of. For now the 98 is for weekends away with the boys and playing on some of the harder tracks. Prado is tourer and very very light offroad. 84 will be just for fun and having a go at tracks that have a high percentage of damage :thumb:

yeah- like you can shatter a front diff in 20,000kms of highway driving in a 95 series turbo diesel.... POS....
And that the R151 gearbox used in the 95 series up to 2002 has serious internal flaws and will enevitably fail by 200,000kms.
And that toyota beefed up the front diff in the 120 series, to the detriment of the rear- now they blow if you give the V6 or D4D too much herbs with a rear wheel cocked and bring it down.
But yes- it would ruin the driving experience. Your very wrong about the prado driveline- its not just a 4wd on demand, it is a constant 4wd. The Centre diff is a torsen, and sends power both ways- Otherwise you could get a prado to do a donut... trust me, you cant.
Fit an auto locker to the rear, you'll get away with it. Until the constant noise drives you nuts. Put one in the front, and it would be like driving a hilux with the hubs in and a front locker on the highway.
The Prado 95, 120, LC 80's (GXL and up) and 100 series (And 105 GXL) share the same driveline- Torsen centre diff with manual 50/50 diff locker.

In my opinion mate yours is a lemon :p
The R series gearbox in my Lux handles a lot more power than it would in the Prado and yes torque also. I have been on other forums researching them and in my opinion the failures are no more evident than a lot of others when driven in harder situations. According to the doomsdayers Hilux IFS is weak as and breaks everytime its given a hard time. However mine seems to handle 35s and a V8 better than expected. I will reserve my judgement on the Prado till I have owned it for a while but I very much doubt I will have the same problems I have heard yours having :D

Yeah, were of the same opinion... but it aint a toyota lemon, its a toyota servicing lemon.
What kind of mechanic decides to fix a clunky front diff by simply dropping the tailshaft and just tightening up the pinion nut as hard as you can?
Thats what they did with the damn thing!
Theres a few different series of the R151 gearbox- depends on the letter following it (different input and output shafts, slight internal changes.
The R151 gearbox in the turbo diesel prado and the R151 in the 3.4L V6 prado arent the same box- you cannot share the internals, and the V6 one is a stronger box from all reports.
The R151 in the TD lux, TD prado, 1HZ 79 and 105 series are all identical.
And western mining and BHP were dropping one a week out of their 79's from 2000-2002. the guy who rebuilt ours has done about 40 of them for western mining alone.

Prado looks great Gary, as far as problems with the Prado I wouldn't worry about others opinions as you seem to here horror stories on almost every vehicle ever made so  . As you know mate I cop crap about my Disco all the time & those people I usually end up waiting for at the top or recovering them :thumb: . I think you have done well mate & Mel is happy.
P.S- yes I am at home as Kerrie woke up this morning with a migrain & I had to come home as the kids hadn't been taken to school, not happy actually as I can't go to work tomorrow (site rules :( ).
Give me a call as we should catch-up over the weekend plus I need to talk to you about holidays.

Cheers guys at thsi stage there is no plan for bullbars or anything Mel wants it to stay looking for road orientated. Maybe in time but apart from wiring some aux points off the second battery and maybe a new stereo unit with reversing camera its finished.
I gave it a good wash this morning and wanted to go flex it up to see how it goes and get some good pics. Seems I cant find the keys and apparently this one wasnt bought to be flexed up so I was told to go play with my own car :(

Probably you being over cautious ;) its actually got a fair bit of room. Also that battery will be getting replaced with the deep cycle from the Lux, as soon as I remember to bring the lugs home from work. I am not a fan of using a cranking battery for the second battery so thats why I am changing it also the Lux wont need it as when camping i will have the trailer.:D
Well took it up to Bribie today with Celts and a couple of other mates and must admit I was very impressed. It was a nice change to see the others bouncing all around in their Luxes while the Playdo stayed level and smooth.:D The Bilsteins are an awesome addition to it and made the ride really smooth.
Also was good to get home and not be knackered from fighting the car all day. I am really looking forward to a few more trips in it. And today was great with good company and really cruisy just what I needed to get me motivated to work on the Lux again. To remember why it is we get out there with these things. :thumb:

Are you going to set it up more for family/touring duties or do you have more mods in mind for her ????
This one will only get bolt on mods, the Hilux is for all the silly stuff. This one will get airlockers front and rear, Fourbys fitted up a new ARB compressor today while it was being serviced so next service will be the front locker. It will get a UHF and a removable nudge bar with spotties as Mel doesnt want a bullbar of any sort on it. Hopefully later on a underbonnet shower unit and a nice set of 18s as well :D
So yeh a few little plans but nothing silly.

I wouldnt bother with the underbonnet shower unit......you have to have the car close to camp and that can be a pain in the arse......a 12v shower with the hot water on demand or the like would be better and you can easily take it whether you are away with the lux company car or prado

Well having gotten sick of working on the Lux, I decided it was time to take the family out. So after work Friday I packed up the trailer and Prado and set it all up so the wife could come and get me from work on Saturday and we could head off.
We headed off to Cruiser Park, having arranged to meet some friends. Even the traffic jam at Caboolture couldnt dampen my spirits. The Prado is so much more relaxing than the Lux to drive its great. After getting there setting up camp and getting some firewood I went for a little play without the wife to test out the Prado. Have to admit its a lot better than the Lux was with the same mods and once I get some barwork and lockers itll be more than capable of what I want it for.

Yeh thats true but as Bop said to be honest I am getting over the work required to keep a rig in good order and still do the hard stuff. I had forgotten how challenging no risk, medium tracks could be in an unlocked IFS. Hey Gary, how are you going mate:thumb:, you say that the Prado is more capable offroad than the Hilux when it was at that stage is it really?, and even though it's got a small lift and with the muddies, how much have those mods improved it offroad?
Andy_b

They Prado is coil rear end which SH!TS all over the leaf rear end.
Nah Steve I dont see it ever getting a sas, 33s on new 17s or 18s, diff ratios, crawler gears, dual lockers, barwork, interior revamp and Supercharger are on the wish list though :D:D:D
Indy, compared to the torsion bar front the Hilux had, the coil over strut front in the Prado is light years ahead in ride and it also has some form of flex. Then as Andy said above the coil rear works extremely well, I was surprised at just how well when I pulled the swaybars out pity I didnt get any pics.
The biggest downside is the low range its absolutely pathetic compared to the Lux and to be honest I am not surprised people blow diffs in them. They are just geared too high 1st low is higher than 2nd low in the Lux. If you were to hit things in mid rev range 2nd it would be equivalent to top of 3rd in the Lux and IMO thats a recipe for the front end to go bang. Hence why I wont push it to hard, once I get crawler gears in it I will be more inclined to use it.
Well the Prado is booked in to Fourbys for a snorkel on Friday, and then Sequential Vapour Gas Injection at Torquegas next Tuesday. I will be fitting the UHF and stereo from the Lux this weekend, and next weekend Bop is going to give me a hand to make some sliders for it.
I was going to make a nudge bar also but am now thinking a Sahara bar or second hand ARB bar modded will be a better option for the front. I can then incorporate the 170s and 140s from the Lux in the bar somehow.
Once the gas is done next week I just need to find the time to get it down to Ryano again and it will get front and rear lockers fitted. Then I will just need to get diff breathers and gearbox breathers sorted and it should be ready for some family trips :thumb:
Am also in two minds in regards to getting the seats from the Lux retrimmed and fitting them into it also hrmmmmm :D:D

Should be awesome once all done mate, IMO the Sahara bars really suit them & would look best.
Yeh they are just so expensive, I am doing some checking into the airbag situation at present. Who knows give it another 3 years and maybe just maybe :D:D

Yeah they are hey, but they are a smick bit if gear though. I don't mind the guard chop on that Lexus either. Gives it a way better approach angle that's for sure.
At this stage I would like the Prado to be at a similiar level the Lux was when it was first featured. I just dont think I can bring myself to part with the money for a Sahara bar. At this stage custom front and rear bars with 33s and regeared to suit is the way to go I think. I need to look into the 33s as if I am going to regear it I will do it when the air lockers go in.

That would be the easiest way to do it. No use pulling the diff's apart multiple times if it's not needed. If you can get a custom bar done with the air bags it would be a better option than the cost of the Sahara for sure. Is there much info on the legalities?

Just double check the legalities with seats too. Im not to sure what the go is (if you find out let me know) but the seats have a pressure sensor in them to make the light on the dash flicker when you dont have a seat belt on.
Now Im not sure if this is incorperated into the airbag system because of the seat belt tensioner (the one that tensions the belts a milisecond before the airbags go off)... would need to ask an expert or check the wiring diagram

Yeh there is a sensor on the belt clip which wouldnt be a drama as I would reuse it anyway. The weight sensor looks easy enough to refit into a new seat, would need to take the seat out to see for sure though. Will get some quotes on getting the seats recovered and decide from there.
The front bar may be easy the standard bumper seems to seperate from the airbag system meaning that I could reuse the base to make a custom bumper without affecting the airbag sensors. Will need to get some literature on it though to confirm.
At this stage only the sliders and nudge bar will be done, I will look more into custom bars when it no longer is used by the wife for daily duties.
Got the head unit and UHF from the Lux in today.

Cool, are the sliders just going to be be simple along the sills?
Kind of will be taking the standard steps off and basically cutting them down the middle then making the steel base or flat slider basically and refitting the top of the standard steps back on. Will then colour match the slider to the grey of the standard step. End result will hopefully be something that looks like the stock step but with a lot more protection :thumb:

Thought so as you'd mentioned that earlier on.
Well the Playdo spent the day at Fourby's 4wd Superstore (http://www.fourbys.com.au) today and now has a nice new snorkel fitted. I must admit it was hard to only get one thing done as normally when I leave Fourbys I have at least a new rim or rim and tyre combo fitted :D:D

Any idea what you'll replace the STT's with?
At this stage keep them until they wear out, then either MTZs or 4 rib ATZs. Looked at it today and cant see the need for 33s and regearing on it, for what it will be used for the current tyre size is more than suitable. :thumb:

Oh please..........
you know what i'm thinking.
Well got the gas system fitted yesterday, first impressions are that there is no noticable difference in power, looking forward to getting to use it more and see how consumption goes. From all accounts it should be a fair bit cheaper to run while still keeping the petrol power :thumb:
This weekend Dan and I are doing the sliders and looking at the front bar options, I am liking the idea of a tube bar on it the more I think of it. Also need to chase up Ryano to see how he went on the rims I picked out :D

Yeh main concern is if we can get it looking good with such a big nose.

19-08-2009, 11:25 AM
The shape of the front end won't suit anything over the top that's for sure. Some nice curved lines with some tabs built in for spotties like the lux bar would look sweet with some sliders. Will you be doing a plated rear bar with a qtr chop or will the standard 1 be staying for now?
Yeh will concentrate on the sliders first and if we can be stuffed look at the front bar.
For the rear I am not sure what I will do yet, I havent seen a rear design I think will suit the Prado and with the gas tank there now it looks pretty vunerable and not sure if their is much point worrying about the departure angle for now.
Hoping to have the rims and lockers done for the Condamine trip next month not that they will be needed for that run.:thumb:

Though with the Paj you can drive "all wheel drive" on road or rear wheel drive on road then 4wd off road... as opposed to the Prado which is constantly all wheel drive then proper 4wd.... :)
Steve air front and rear unfortunately, if it was part time 4wd I would have already fitted an auto up front ;)

Hey boof,
Just throwing this out there, but I wonder if you could retrofit a 4 inch lift from the current model hilux to the front of a prado (diff drop etc etc) and then put longer coils, adj panhard, brake lined etc in the rear.
hmmmmmm could be interesting....
or maybe even a bolt on a king coil over kit from a tachoma from the states...WOW that would be fun...
See if the missis would notice..
Chris
Hey mate yep all of that can be done but to be honest I am not interested in doing it. The roofline is quite high now and a 2" lift is more than adequate for what it will be used for. Overly tall rigs on the road do no one any favours imo :thumb:

I agree, we get enough bad press as it is, I gathered that its probably not going to happen to this thing, but you have to admit that some coil overs would be nice :-)
Havent updated this in a while havent really done much worth noting a few day trips here and there. But with the upcoming Cape Trip later this year we have started to do a few more trips, so I can get a better feel of just what it can do. This also means that the next few mods needed for the trip will be done.
At this stage the front bar should be on in a few weeks just waiting to get it back from the sandblasters so I can paint it. We are also getting Fourbys to change the springs to the next rate to compensate for the front bar and extra gear we will be carrying to the Cape. Also will be getting the dual lockers fitted prior to the trip, and I have some headrest screens in getting recovered in matching fabric to the original seats as well. Will probably add two small DVD players moulded into the centre console for these. That way the kids can watch different movies if they wish.
Just need to organise some tube and I will have to make up some sliders also as I damaged the standard passenger one on Sunday, having a play on a little side track, on the way home from Condamine. Plastic steps what were Toyota thinking
Was a good day out with some good people, hoping to get back up to Bribie for a day trip in the next few weeks and then planning a weekend to Cruiser Park or Rover with some mates also.

Thanks Rob but I dont see it ever having black wheels, black and chrom possibly like I have on the crewman but thats about it.
Speaking of wheels I will be speaking with Ryano this week as I think I need something with more offset, I have decided against going to 33s I just dont see the need with what its used for. Also its not worth the aggravation it may cause with the cops so for now the tyre size will stay the same. I did some measuring today and I reckon with a 2" body lift I could fit 35s, but I doubt it will ever happen.
Had a good look at the bar fitting this morning and said what the hell, will wire the lights up this arve when it cools down a bit and pick up a set of LF170s off Ryano for it tomorrow.

Hey mate don't wanna sound like a know all but you should really drop the bar a bit as the body on the 120 Prado's flex's quite a bit and it may rub or hit and annoy you just letting you know as i fit them a fair bit and leave a good inch or so gap to the body and flair. But other then that it looks good mate.
Cheers Oz
Celts I have seen pics of a couple in the UK that have been bodylifted with larger rubber and they look good :D In relation to the lockers yes it will be getting them prior to the Cape. Seeing as we will be towing the camper I will need the extra traction I feel.

This Prado was the older shape, the body lift didnt do it any justice. As the body is narrower than your model, the body lift, suspension lift and at a guess 31s (they did look a bit small), it did look bad.
Rob
Herby I did it in 2 pack its not perfect but I can live with it.
Rob that makes sense, but I seriously doubt I will bodylift it after seeing the roof height next to Twistys Lux on the weekend. It would just be too high to be practical.
While catching up with Twisty at Fourbys we also trial fitted one of his wheels to the Prado. I will probably go the same offset with a slightly narrower tyre and rim to alleviate some scrubbing. Will probably look to doing it after the Cape trip and do the lockers and regear before the trip.

Rod yeh the only difference in roof height between mine and Twistys, is around 1", given he has larger tyres, and an extra 3" of lift, it shows how high the wagons roofs are compared to the utes.
