I have always driven 4wds since getting my L plates. So i would rate myself as an 8 / 10. But driving a car i would rate myself at about 6 / 10 becuase i stall the little things takeing off and they are very hard to see out of when changing lanes. ( the only time i have ever been tooted was driving a car)

i drive i dont crash much so i would say above average

i think most would have an over inflated opinion of their driving ability..... i consider myself a rather competent driver.... others might not.

My Torana UC 3.0 that I drove from 18-23 taught me lots of things about car control.

Switch to swb TD MU, I learnt and am still learning new things. Chuck in some truck driving and I reckon I'm a pretty good driver overall.

The one thing you must never do is be outside your comfort zone or overestimate your abilities and always maintain situational awareness- no fines or accidents in 8 years, I think I'm alright on the road.

im on the road most of the time, i consider myself to be an above average driver, but i still feel the need to stick my finger out the window and abuse idiots from time to time

Yer and would you know how many other people who deem themselves as competent drivers crash each day?

Why? Because there are so many other fools out there that think they are competent drivers too, who do stupid shit and cause accidents, how can you truly say how you rate.

I have been driving legally onroad for 15+yrs now, only ever had 1 speeding ticket when i was 17 and 2 minor accidents, i reckon that's a pretty good record, because i drive defensively, i never trust any other motorists on the road.

But just because i can say this doesn't mean i am completely competent, compared to pro race drivers eg, rally Oz, V8 supercars etc, i would be complete shit.

Therefore i won't rate myself, but thanks for asking :)

i drive for a living, towing up to 40 tonnes behind me,much of it is inside, and i always have to be on the lookout for smaller vehicles, pedestrians, forklifts, overhead cranes etc etc,all in limited space at times,so i find i am always looking for obstacles, idiots, kids etc when on the road.i like to think i am a good driver.

I've done a couple of defensive driving courses, drive 40000ks a year, and rate myself a very good driver. The two biggest factors for that are I rode moterbikes for years and as a result of being a vulnerable road user I am very aware of what is going on around me, secondly I'm very courteous on the road which is often underated as a driving skill IMO.

I havnt drove yet but i used to ride motos and i recon it would be an advantage as you have the ideas on clutch and throttle, motos are easier to ride then cars are to drive ;)

You sure you do,t drive a volvo??

They are the safest car in an accident, because they are never involved, just cause them.

I drive an ambulance so I think I am an OK driver.
Its the other idiots I have to overtake that sh%ts me.

Always give people benefit of the doubt, they may have made an honest mistake.

The way i see it, almost everybody on the road is a good driver, otherwise they wouldn't last 5 minutes on city/suburban roads.

The people who aren't so good at driving are:
* THE STUPID - make a lot of mistakes cos don't know any better
* THE ABSENT MINDED - wasn't concentrating, never have been.
* THE FOOLISH - can't believe they tried that stupid stunt.
* THE ARROGANT - among other things, travel in the right lane - slowly.

Which of course leaves very few drivers on the road who are actually good.., us!

I have been booked a few times and in a few acko's but I havent been in an at-fault accident yet. I have spent alot of time on the road with most of my work so I reckon I've learnt a thing or too along the way. But like many others I do occasionally get a honk or whatever, it only takes the smallest thing sometimes to loose concentration. When ever the girl and I go away on holidays or frequently to canberra I drive, not because I ask to but because J' prefers me drive the long trips.

17-09-2004, 06:58 PM
i reckon they should ban hipster jeans and short tops in built up areas!! >:( makes it very hard to concentrate on the road......... plus i get a sore neck from trying to get an extended look.....

Been driving for almost 40 years - never an insurance claim & only one ticket, so rated myslef pretty good ...... UNTIL I did a Defensive driving course and then an advanced driving course. Was a real wake up call and identified the bad habbits I had developed without realising it. Hopefully, the experience added to the courses now makes me an above average driver on & off road !

I think that I am ok on the road. Sometimes I am really disappointed with the things I do. I drive a 1983 NA Pajero, but I also occasionally drive an 86 60 series and a 2001 E39 BMW 5 series V8 (great car to drive ;D) I have never had an accident involving any other vehicles, but I have hit an Emu on the Oodnadatta Track SA and I have hit a Kangaroo on Wilcania-Bourke Rd NSW. When I hit the emu, I had 2x Nightstaler 200 drivingt lights but then I got rid of them and got 2x Lightforce 240 Blitz and 2x Narva Compact 80 driving lights. I still hit a kangaroo, but fortunately with my lights, I spotted it in time to avoid any major damages (I hit the roo at 5kmh). I think that driving in rural and city areas are two totally different things, but I think that I am better at outback driving (even though I live in Melbourne)

FIG JAM !!!

I teach defensive driving theory when I am not correcting other drivers bad habits via the hip pocket or investigating prangs!

These days I seem to drive a computer more than a double bubble so my driving skills are probably slipping a little - bummer

These days your gotta worry more about the clowns around you then yourself.I'm getting sick of tools out there who see 4wds and think ill just go up the inside and cut him off and they wonder why they get horned or abused.
