Well I thought today would be a good time to tackle the passenger side swivel hub rebuid on my 1994 dual cab, live axle front end hilux, considering I had 10 hours of spare daylight.........it still isn't back together http://www.perth4x4.net/forum/images/smilies/100.gif
First off I did everything by the book and all went well, I changed all bearings and races, seals and regreased the CV's
When it came time to reassembly I struck a problem.
I have fitted the CV and inner axle shaft back into the diff assembly and pushed it in the whole way with a bit of fiddling around and installed the swivel hub and bolted it down with the bearing caps and steering arm so it's nice and secure then this is where I have stuffed up
I installed the metal thing with a rubber O ring thing onto the swivel hub and put the stub axle on and brake dust shield on and bolted it down nice and tight, but theres about a 3mm gap between the swivel hub face and stub axle face, I removed the lot again and tried fitting the brake dust shield then the stub axle over the top of it and then the dust shield fouls on the swivel hub body, I have been through the manual and it shows no pictures or tells you what goes on first, I am 99% sure the O ring seal goes onto the swivel hub first then the stub axle then the brake dust shield but why is it not sitting flush with my swivel hub?
Have I not pushed the axle in far enough or something like that?
The car is in the shed now until tomorrow

what do you guys think?

Chucking spanners will get you nowhere, recently did mine on a 80 series and yes it took me all day to do one, and I was hoping to do both. Luckily the drivers side is OK. The stub axle should bolt up to the housing using the rubber seal. Try doing a dry run with out the dust seal to ensure the stub axle is going on right. Then mark where the stub axle aligns with the housing remove and then fit the dust shield. I know it may sound dumb, but have you got the dust shield round the right way. On the 80 series and I suspect the hilux should be similar, the order of parts is seal, stub axle, dust shield and then the dust seal

Here's the deal,
Presuming the inner axle is fully inserted and stub axle brass bush is properly seated into stub.Install as follows......
Swivel hub,then gasket,then stub,then another gasket
Backing plate,then gasket
outer disc hub seal, then bolt to swivel hub.Yes it's a shit to line up the bolts with all the bolt holes in all the various parts, but if you use a good blue or copper silicon to 'glue' all your gaskets in place (allow to set) it will be alot easier, the silicon will also seal much better from water/dirt/oil/grease.
But if that inner axle or stub axle bush is not seated correctly then it will never go together properly.
Hope this helps champ

yep I had it all on in the right order, But...... I was just having a moment! I forgot I had to torque the stub axle down to 49 newton meters to make the lip of the stub axle seal into the swivel hub body, it is all better now and doesn't leak any grease or oil from the hubs anymore woohoo good feeling knowing how much money I saved by doing the job my self, but my hands look like I have been a seasoned mechanic for 30 years!

Yep it sure feels good to do it yourself and save money. Next on the list for me is the front pinion seal. Have to knock up a bar to hold the flange first. Another bucket of money to save.

Nice pics, looks like a bought one!!
