Well, central Vic somewhere - would need to be somewhere with good food, accommodation, plenty of grog, and of course some bush to play in. I live in Bendigo which is I guess smack in the middle of Vic.

Are there any challenging track through the Wombat state forest? Then there is Mt dissapointment. Anyone else have any places in mind?

Sounds like a top idea, maybe when some more tracks open.
toolangi state forest is fun.
you can count me in! ;D
As long as I am not working :'(
Snofox
07-09-2004, 01:02 PM
I like:
- Toolangi State Forest
- Mansfield to Licola via Sheepyard Flats?
I don't like:
* Gembrook - sure it has some challenging tracks but the area is rather boring, and totally stuffed up anyway. I live 15 minutes drive from there, and don't even bother. Besides, its hard to do anything in that area due to the amount of fast dirtbikes you gotta watch out for.
But as mentioned, it would be better to wait until the good tracks open again.
But that doesn't stop us making dates. :)
But,
But,
But.

Snofox
10-09-2004, 09:18 AM
what part of vic that in
Vic Alps, about 30 minutes directly North of Moe.
Beautiful area, many tracks, and I already know some like the back of my hand.
I'll gladly do a meet up for that area, but we'll have to wait until some of the tracks re-open after the winter closures. Not long to wait.

I've been looking at the snow cams (alpine) today and most mountains got at least 20cm frersh last night. So ya never know, there may still be a fair bit of snow around over the next few weeks.
Still waiting for you guys to work out the details, and i'll be there!!! (wherever there is)
Come on you Vic guys pull your head in a bit and get organized. The fellas on the other side of the boarder have a date, time, destination about 13 4WDs. :-[
I put Forward Snofox to grab the bull by the horns and set the date and destintion as he started the thread, someone to second that. ;D
If it turned out that it was a weekend other they the long weekend and work didn't get in the way I would be keen for a run. Woods point sounds good haven't been for along while or any place I haven't been be for would be good. Even just a day trip to put names to faces before the long weekend would be good. :)
Anyway just my thoughts don't really count for that much.
Cheers Coza
All those in favour say I
Hj60 just having a look back at this thread and most of the talk is Erica, Whally and woods point. That's pretty ease to combine in one weekend staying at Woodspoint.
Just trying to think what tracks are still open up that way to see if it would be something you could do before the opening of the tracks. Will duck in to the DSE or what ever they call them selfs these day and find out tommorow.
Sounds like that might be the go. Even a day trip just to put faces to names would be good. Dose anybody know when the 4wd/fishing show is on maybe that might be a good chance for as to meet up & get to know each other.
Quick look on page 223 of the4wd monthly and it's on the 21-24th of October. Then the next weekend is the long weekend.
What dose everyone thick about meeting at the show??????
Would have to be on sunday because of work on sat.
Well done Hj60 Sunday would be the day for me to if I can make it at all. I hate going to the show with no money so many thing to buy.
Agre with that but need to look to see what I can buy later on.
so we'll set sunday as a date for meeting everyone
Yep Those that show show and those that don't don't.
will sort out more details as it gets closer

Anbody got a copy of the snatch strap article from a few issues ago that i could have a read of. I wasn't buying the mag at that time but am now about to subscribe.

He, he, he !
I'd like to take the bull by the horns, but without internet at home (Telco stuffing me around on ADSL), I can only monitor the thread while at work.
I like the idea of meeting at the 4x4 show, and will be there if thats the vote.
I would however like to have a meet for offroading!
Lets keep the option of a get-together after the tracks re-open in the high country.
Walhalla and Woods Point still gets my vote.
G,day Snofox
Bit of a bugger having to stop work to look at the forum hey.
Anyway sounds like Walhalla-Woodspoint some time in November. I guess it would have to be the long week end as the later you get into November lots of chrisy things start to happen end of year work functions and famliy things how does that all sound.
Long week end is no good for me this time around but that does not matter lots of weekends after Xmas.
Cheers Coza
Snofox
13-09-2004, 11:03 AM
Sounds good, except...
Tracks technically don't re-open until the Nov long weekend! That date can be extended until later if winter holds out for longer.
Therefore tracks may not re-open until mid to late Nov this year, the way all this snow is going.
But!!!!..., there are still plenty of tracks remain open all year in those areas, so again. Any time suits me.
Snofox do you Know of some of the track that would be open. I can think of some down around erica.
Yer I would be real keen for a day trip before the look week end.

13-09-2004, 11:19 AM
Know quite a few in Walhalla area Coza.
I would like to know more.
I'm all for exploring.
How about a day trip on the 3rd or 10th of October??????

13-09-2004, 01:25 PM
Any day or overnight trips suits me. I'm in the same boat as snofox wrt internet at home. I only have access at work.
Meeting at fishing and 4wd show. Good idea... I'll be in that. Anybody been to the new exhibition ctr. Where would we meet?
I'm happy to go 4wd'ing any weekend or long weekend.
As for tracks opening... I think it was 2 seasons ago that the track to Wonnangatta station was closed until after cup weekend..... Mongrels, but there are heaps of other tracks to explore up there.

Done, as requested.
Your wish my command.
Nice compilation work Coza.
Thanks Snofox it keeps me busy as I'am not working today as it is to wet or for most of the week looking at the forcast. ;D
All we have to do now is see who can make it, confirm the date make a time to meet then follow the bull bar from there. ;)
I would have to meet you guys up that way somewhere say Erica shop/pub or something. you guys could meet at a Macca's somewhere say Pakenham or something. ;D
mickyd
13-09-2004, 03:48 PM
Does everyone have a UHF radio? If so when we near Pakenham... or wherever we decide to meet, we can communicate with each other to avoid confusion.
The plan as it stands now is to start at Walhalla and trek our way through to Woods point, exploring tracks etc along the way.
Being a day trip.... I'm expecting an early start. I guess we just need to organise a meeting place and time.
I'm guessing that there is a Macca's on the freeway into or out of Pakenham? If so, that would be an ideal place to meet.
Mickyd
yes
yes
yes
and yes ;D
would think most would have a UHF ???
The trek would be something like that just need to have a look at what tracks are open. :-\
Early start would be the ticket :o :
Maccas is on the east bound side of the highway in Pakenham right in the thick of things can't miss it realy ;)
don't have a UHF or recovery gear yet as only brought 4wd about a month ago, will see what i can organise in the time available.
4wd/fishing show can meet at the steps out the front on the crown end of center. time????
G,day Hj60 wouldn,t worry to much about recovery gear as long as we have a couple of snatchem straps we will be cool shouldn,t think that we will need them any way, maybe if it is still WET
A UHF would be handy though but they can hit the hip pocket pretty hard.
4WD show how does 10.30am sound, take me a couple of hours to get there.
10.30 it is. whose comin?????
evil_hitman
13-09-2004, 07:31 PM
4wd/fishing show can meet at the steps out the front on the crown end of center. time????
hj60, i have 2 UHF handhelds. i'm sure i could probably lend one to you for the day but obviously you wouldn't get it until you get to the meet point.
Maccas is on the far side of pakenham on the left side of the highway heading away from melbourne, next to the 24 Hour BP Servo and would make a good start point.
Matt

13-09-2004, 07:32 PM
10:30am is good for me.
As for the day trip to Walhalla area..,
he he! Yep start at Pakenham Maccas. I can walk to that one in about 10 minutes from home. ;D
Very common meeting point for 4wd groups.
Would 7 be to early for some at Pakenham Just thinking that it would be more like 7.30 when you guys got going and it would be getting on to 8.30-9.00 by the time you got to Erica.
Now we just need a route to go on was thinking maybe
Head out to the Thompson Dam across the river below the wall then on to Aberfeldy and if the tracks are open should be able to go to Violet Town, Redjacket then Woods point. The only thing with that is you would bypass Whalhalla.
Yes, No maybe
Comments PLEASE

wow up, is it the 17th of sep or october.....? 17th of oct is better as i'm yet to pick up the 4b (pick it up on the 15th tomorrow!!!!) and would like to go over it before going to far.
moe macca's (on the HWY carn't miss it) or rawson would be a better place to meet the crew from melb. it would save a lot of time then we can all go up to erica and there is less chance of people getting lost at moe.
Snofox
I'am easy if you know a few tracks you wan't to go on around Walhalla thats cool. Those are really the finer details that we can work out a little more on the day anyway.
Its all coming together.
All good will see you guys Bright and early on the 17th of Oct ;D ;D ;D
Thommo the Hut
14-09-2004, 11:13 AM
not worried about tracks around walhalla, it would be easier if we meet them at moe macca's and then went to walhalla/erica/rawson
Thommo the Hut if I was a good throw I could hit your place with a stone. What if you and I meet up and meet them up the track or something?
mickyd
14-09-2004, 11:33 AM
17 Oct no problem.......
except we have to WAIT AN EXTRA WEEK. :'( Next question is are we meeting at Pakenham or Moe.
Also how long does it take to get from the City to Pakenham ( I'm assuming Moe's about 1-1.5hrs past Pakenham.)
I usually get to Woods point via Healsville/Marysville/Matlock
Early start suits me fine. As for tracks... I don't know many around Walhalla/ Erica. I spose there's only one way to find out about them. Any tracks... any routes... I'm easy as long as we all agree. ( My wife agrees with me... I'm easy.)
Mickyd
Pakenham should be under an hour from the city, like say the end of the tunnels( Punt Rd )
Pakenham to Moe should also be under an hour, would think that Pakenham to Erica would be about an hour and 10 or 15mins. :)
Takes me less than 2 hours to get to Melb from Traralgon (half an hour past Moe on the highway) ;)
Can put the clock on it if you like, as we are driving to St kilda Friday night and post some times up for you guys. ???
Still think Pakenham would be a good spot for you guys to meet, sounds like 7 will be good for everyone, and we can work out a spot for the couple of us already up this way to me you guys. Erica/Moe either dosn't realy bother me that mush.
Cheers Coza. 8)

Cool nannas. Just tryin to get a rough time so I can prepare myself for the pre sparrow fart rise on the 17th. Lookin like a 2hr trip to Pakenham from Geelong. 7am at Pakenham is fine.
Anyone got any problems with being at Pakenham at 7am ?
Thommo the Hut
14-09-2004, 03:15 PM
ok, people from and around melb meet at pak macca's, if some in the melb crew know the back roads(healsvill etc..) to erica then we will meet at erica\walhalla what ever siuts.
if not my self and Coza can meet the guys coming from melb at moe macca's around 9/9:30 and it then takes about 30mins to get to erica from moe.
pakenham is about 1hr from moe

If its the 17th of Oct i could still be in. Id have to talk to my parents tho as i would of only had my P's for less than a month and they might not want me going on a trip so soon. If i did come, i could meet anywhere along there, i travel to Erica quite often.
Hopefully ill be able to come, might be able to get tom_286 also
But if the parents say no, i could always drag my dad along, i dont think he'll mind, and being a hunter up in that area, he could direct us to a few tracks

If it is Walhulla (so long as it's not too wet) you have to try Deep creek 4 as I done it at New Years and it was grouse.
So is it on the 17th of Oct now?

all sounds good to me, just fitted the coopers today keen to see how they go.

Deep Creek, is that where in some parts there is sheer drop offs along the sides and theres all motorbikes etc in the bottom. A mate was talking bout it i think, and the motorbike tracks, are one motorbike width wide with drop offs of the side
So is it on the 17th of Oct now?

Sorry I havent had a chance to get on here as every time I do it won't let me.
Anyway the missus (who also likes a drive) and myself should be able to make it and I might bring a mate if his 4by is on the road.
Yes Deep Creek tracks are preaty narley as No4 I think is the worst which runs down (not over) a creek and is preaty full on as you drive along and theres a sign been made (which was there at new years) which said "WELCOME TO HELL" with a arrow pointing down as the track just goes over the edge and many bike riders don't notice untill they're airborne and go SH!T.
Deep Creek No3 is a dead end but there are plenty of good tracks to do as well as a few river crossings.
If I do come I'll be bringing all my maps of the area.
There is also a good river crossing at Coopers Creek providing it's not too deep as it was about 2 feet at New Years.

Coopers Creek xing has a hole on the far side about 3 meters before the end and that was the depth I was talking about before. This time of year I'm not sure if any one should tackle it with out a snorkel.

Travis
ok this trip is sounding like it might be a bit much for my vehicle (and possibly me)
I have no diff locks. i have all terrains. I have no winch. Hopefully i will have a snatch strap by then.
Matt
Don't be to concered I'am sure we will cater for everone and don't let the talk about some of the tracks turn you off. they are not all like that.

Cool, I did ask if the deep crk tracks were still diff lock area's and I guess the answer is yes. Might have a sniff around there one day soon.

Just to ease the minds of those without recovery gear.... If you get stuck, there's going to be at least 6 other vehicles there... maybe more. I'm sure you won't be stuck for long.
I have a winch, snatch strap, shackles, snatch block, sling, a 4m length of chain... ( heavy duty.) Rope and snow chains.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has got recovery gear.
I also don't have lockers but that's on the agenda. Even without lockers I've suprised myself with what the vehicle can do.
As Coza mentioned... Everyone will be catered for.

Coopers Creek crossing is ok.
The water level is usually only 2 feet to 2.5 feet.
My Petrol Hilux without a splash pan can make it through without trouble. The water level is controlled by the Thompson Dam and usually only varies an inch or two all year. I spend a lot of time up there, and my Hilux is fairly stock standard, with no lockers and CRAPPY tires.
Those who don't want to try it, i will take the easy way around it.
As MickyD said everybody will be catered for.
Welcome aboard again jackroov6, wedding anniversary plan on hold?

And some good loving that night ;D
Its going to be tuff to wake up in the morning.
JackrooV6, must say I love your work, good to see you can make it ;D
Snofox you do Realize that the last few winter,s have been very dry, if you get rain like we had over the last week up in the Aberfeldy catchment area the Thompson will rise a far bit for a short time. I use to have the Ph No for the gaugeing staition at Coopers as I did a far bit of kayaking when i was younger. When it rained in Aberfeldy we went in at Coopers. As i said it doesn,t stay up for long and i also think that there will be no problem to cross on the day.
All's looking good CAN'T WAIT :P :P :P

I have recovery gear and a winch as well.
Thats good to here about Coopers Creek as I wasn't sure how the flow was controlled.
Looking forward to it as I should hopefully have some new off road rubber by then as the minister of finance has approved the purchase of some, now to save some money.

Probably the best and easiest way for everyone to get there is, after the Thompson Dam go to Merringtons Flat, Junction Tk, Donnelys Ck Tk, Past Toombon Mine, onto Codes Flat. Then back on to the main Walhalla- Aberfeldy road for a while then onto Johnson's Hill Tk into Woods Point, there's 5 creek crossings and a bit of low range stuff but all in all just an easy drive... cheers Troopy93

Relax Coza.
I don't care where we go, as long as we can cater for everybodys needs safely. I'll do anything that won't bust my truck.
To me, the overall aim is Adventure, and to see some good stuff in the process, with just a bit of challenge thrown in. Add a sausage or two, stir in the sauce and diced Chilli.....Oops!
Although I guess it would be preferable to do all this without driving from one end of Victoria to the other in one day.

From my house to Woods Point and return is an easy 5 hour drive and 214 km in total, but that is coming back thru Matlock, Link tk, Fumina , Hillend , Willow Grove and Moe. It's a good drive and for those from Melbourne way instead of turning at Fumina you just head thru Noojee to the Freeway at Warragul

I know of a couple of huts up there which the deer hunters use... Stayed in them myself and with the heater goin inside... very comfy. Beats lying on the dirt. I could show you where the approximate position on a map is but it is obviously better to drive there and see if for yourself.

2 things.
HJ 60. offer still stands on the hand helds.
2nd, my tyres are crap. Just did a 2 day trip to big river (near lake mountain) in my then 4 day old truck (ok so i'm impatient)
i had to be snatched 3 times. I have A/T's but they are close to stuffed. they are road worthy but not mud worthy. I also killed my k-mart compressor just as it finished pumping up my third tyre. My battery connections are hopeless and my deep cycle battery is stuffed but i'm not sure about the cranking battery as the bad connections could be causing it not to charge properly.
so as long as some people are willing to jump start me if i dont get a battery by then, and others have a compressor to pump my tyres back up i should be a goer.
Video and pics of my vehicle (including a wheel floating in the air part way up one climb) should be coming in the next few days.

G,day Guy's ;D
Just flicking through a few of your post's and I see a couple of you are camping at Wood,s point. I think it is time we had a vote on a general direction of travel, start/finish sort of thing, If we are to meet the campers in woods point then it has to be our first point of call, I reckon anyway. If that is the case then it may change our meeting point's a bit. I,ll throw a couple of options up and get your thought so we can make thing,s alittle clearer for everyone, I know I,am starting to get lost. :P
Option 1:Leave the meeting points as they are.
Travel to Erica and straight to Woods point Via the Aberferdy Woods point Rd or Thompson Valley Rd. ???
Option 2:Leave Pakenham Meeting point alone. Change Moe meeting point
Pakenham boy,s meet up then travel to Noojee.Moe boys meet up then travel toNoojee We all meet in Noojee and travel Loch Valley Rd, Tooronga Rd, Nine mile Rd and on to Woods point to meet up with the others
Option 3:Warburton/Woods point Rd
I think it was you Mickyd that said you go this way from Melb.
I Guess we would have to meet at Warburton or something.
Option 4: Pick a time and all find our own way to Woods point
Not as much fun as traveling in a group
Summary
Option 1: Is easy nothing to change we just drive straight to Woods point ;D
Option 2: I think would be good for those who haven,t been that way before, I would be happy to travel Noojee instead of Moe.
Option 3: May suit some from Melb but is along way around for guys up this way.
Option 4: I reckon is not really a option. No fun that way.
All Rd's that I have mention are Rd's.
There maybe some other option's that I haven,t mentioned so help me out PLEASE, but I think it is about it.
This is only general Direction of trip not the 4wd Tracks, can sort that out a little bit down the track.
Please buy all means tell me to go for a long walk off a short plank if you think this is a waste of time.
Maybe leave for a day or so for comments then have a vote before next Monday
Cheers Guys Not long Now. ( i wish)
option 3 good same with option 2.
what time differance dose the two make with meeting up with campers?

Just a question for those who live out Pakenham/Moe way.... How long does it take to get to Woods point from,

hey guy's
I think for you Mickyd, it is something like 1h 45m to pakky then if you added another 2h 15m going through Noojee you would smell the beer at the pub in Wood's point. Really don't think there is alot in it but it may be a tad longer Pakky, Noojee way. Troopy93 would be the one to ask sounds like he is up that way a fare bit.
I would be happy to leave thing,s the way they are I'm just trying to avoid driving on the same bit of road twice. That's why I think Noojee would be a good option, get abit of a circuit happening.
Anyway I,m like the rest of you happy to follow the 4wd in front. But I would be happy to see some plans as I mention above Confirmed so as there is no confusion as to where we are starting from (Wood's Point) and how we are going to get there(Via Noojee) or something like that, will see how thing pan out over the next day or so and try and get something set in concrete before next week.
Cheers Guy's

I am seriously considering pulling the plug on the Pajero 20th anniversary weekend & joining you guys. From everything I've read, it sounds as though it will be a great day with all levels catered for, (me being into nothing to extreme, have standard NL Pajero with A/T's). If ok with you guys, I will confirm either way by middle of next week.
Cheers

Coza,
It's the 20th anniversary of the Pajero club. It is being held at the Mansfield showgrounds with a spit roast on the Saturday night. It is expected that up to 200 will attend & some of us are hopeful that there will be some 4wding, not just socializing & drinking grog, (nothing wrong with that, but some of want to do some driving).
I have emailed the organiser & waiting for a response; if no driving I'll hopefully be joining you guys. Let you know next week.

We are meeting at a couple of different places and unforutunately it is only a day trip.
Most are meeting at Pakenham McDonalds.
However there are plenty of places to camp at Walhalla area if you wish, can give details if required.
You may bring anybody you like Family, etc.
The tracks we will choose for the day depend on everybody's vehicles, skills and weather. We will cater for what the majority are after.
The more the merrier!
You live where?
Guys,
I'M IN!. This trip sounds too good to miss, so the Pajero w/end is out for me. My only concern was how difficult it is going to be, as I'm reasonably inexperienced, but it seems I'm not the 'Lone Ranger' in this aspect. If I may make a couple of suggestions re; meeting place etc.
1.McDONALDS PAKENHAM. 7.00AM
Allow 30mins for 'pitstop'/breakfast to leave at 7.30am sharp to arrive at Moe by 8.30am.
2.McDONALDS MOE. 8.30AM
Meet Coza, Snofox etc then head off to meet others at designated point if required.
(What do you guys think)
MICKYD. I live in Rowville & If you like, I can meet you on the Monash just before the Heatherton Rd turnoff at 6.30am & then head on to Pakenham. It will take you aprox 90 min to get there from Geelong. Pakenham is about 20mins down the road from there. I'll be on UHF Ch 15, unless advised otherwise, so you can keep in touch.
Any others travelling down Monash welcome to meet there as well if they wish. (12 days to go)

I'm in Rowville, so a short hop up the Freeway. I'll talk to the ministry of finance and get the approval, hehehehe...
My only concern was how difficult it is going to be, as I'm reasonably inexperienced
The last OL's trip I did, we literally dragged a stock Vitara around behind us, he had a ball. The first Vitara that's been to thte top of Rocky Trtack (Toolangie) I'd say.
One thing for the newbies, can I suggest you at the very least purchase your OWN Snatch strap and RATED Shackles. A UHF CB will also enhance your trip. The in car chat can be as much fun as the drive ;D
Hope I can make it, sounds like it's going to be one not to miss.

So we're not going to woods point??
No, the overall vote was for Walhalla.
Woods Point was too far away for a large group who'd never met before, and may be unsure of skill levels, and vehicle limitations.
The main aims for THIS trip:
1. Get to meet one another and have a good time.
2. Get in some good driving on decent tracks, and pick up a few extra driving skills here and there.
The tracks suggested by Troopy93 seem to be excellent!
I propose upon the success of this trip, we have another meet in the not too distant future and try out the tracks that Troopy93 suggests. He knows the are extremely well, and we should also know one anothers skill levels. :)

Ok inexperienced? I've had a 4x4 for 3 weeks.
I live near the stud rd exit of the freeway.
Can i Make a suggestion though. Having had my dad killed by standing next to his car on a busy road (Stud Road) and having also to clean up after similar incidents (Country Fire Authority) can i suggest that we meet OFF the freeway? There is a basketball stadium with lots of parking right next to the Stud Road exit of the freeway which is more than suitable and visible from a distance.
I only suggest this as it looks like we will be having more than 2 vehicles meeting there and snofox can make this ANOTHER official meet point. *grin*
What do people think?
Also Alan, as someone else suggested, get yourself a snatch strap (Kaymar Ringwood $55 and they came first in the 4wd monthly mag review) and 2 rated shackles to suit approx $10-15 each.
worth their weight in gold.
Also good to have, tyre pressure gague and a compressor. But several of us have compressors so that is not essential.
