Once there was a Rangie all rebuilt except the paint. Joy riders thought they'd go for a spin. Police chase ended with rangie on it's roof. I bought it for the cost of it's tyres. Originally I was going to make it a soft top, the roof was beyond repair. Cairns has about 2 meters of rain annually so I change my mind. I needed room to throw a wheelbarrow in so I compromised and it became a dualcab? I have a 3 year old son otherwise it would be a ute.

This is bringing the thread up to date. The previous owner had the motor rebuilt, receipt for $3600. P76 I was told it was 4.6l at the time I didn't think to ask how they increased the capacity 200cc. It had new bushes, springs, shocks, ball joints, uni's and who no's what else. Steel disco wheels with BFGoodridge AT in a monster 225/70x16. I had some leftover blue paint so it became blue. Bought some 31" Silverstone MT117 Sport tyres. Made a huge difference off road but was still too low to the ground.

Needed a body lift so off to clark rubber for some boat rollers. 4 1/2" cut in two gave me my 2" lift. Steel crush tubes inside and new longer bolts.

I don't recommend doing a body lift on uneven ground. Logical really, when I did the first side it was fine. When I started on the otherside the whole body moved downhill. Wasn't that hard to fix but best to avoid it. Flat ground is hard to come by on the side of a hill.

Bull bar off my old 73 rangie with Warn 8000 highmount. Needs lifting now that the body has gone up. This bar isn't worth modifying so I'll make a tube bar for it. Bought a tubed bull bar at a garage sale today that will be cut up and remade.

Wheel arches have been cut, flares on. Disco wheels have had the centers cut flipped and welded. Silverstone MT117 x 35" fitted. Ran out of light tonight to try flexing so tomorrow I'll find out what happens on full flex. I have no doubt something will scrape but theres only one way to find out.

Looks different, I like it.
I have been looking at those tyres recently. I thought they only came in a 33?

The MT117 sport radial only goes up to 33"
The MT117 I've got is a bias ply 35"
I've been using the 31" sport for a while now and been impressed. There just a bit small for rock hopping. Would be great on a Suzi or something.

Thought I should flex it before heading out of town. The rear rubs a little on the inner guard no sharp edges so I'll wait and think about that one. Not easy getting in and out with it up like that especially with the big doors. I had to extend one vacuum hose for the center diff lock. I should have checked the leads going to the starter motor. Went for a drive up a few hills. The motor stopped then had a heap of blue smoke started coming out of the bonnet. The lead from the battery to the starter motor had melted on the extractors then shorted out. One dead new battery, managed to get it home about 9.30 tonight. Live and learn, well I hope I learn.

You sure do things odd. Looks different, but cannot wait for the next glasshouse run. Was the body lift and flares expensive. I need new flares after well the rocks were not as far apart ans the width of the mav. and flares being the widest point. You get the message. How much????

I bought the flares and polly blocks from clark rubber. I think the flares cost about $80 the blocks 5 x 4.5" boat rollers $50. then steel tube for anti crush and I think $60 for longer bolts and nylocks. Went wheeling at glasshouse yesterday, found a few rub marks. More angle grinder and big hammer. No diffs draging on the ground now with the 35"s, well not were we went. I have 2 bull bars to chop up into one tube bar for front and maybe very small bar at rear for tow hook.
I like the way the rangie was walking over the dips in this clip. Motor not running real well, doesn't seem to like glasshouse. Runs fine heading home.

<< Change your aviator pic on the side, new lift and tyres. Thanks for the cost of flares.
Your rangy has to like Glassehouse. Its the best place around here to go 4wding legally. Theres are really good track arcoss the road, but its illegal. When are we going to glasshouse again???

Well had to happen finally broke something mechanical on the rangie. Trying to climb widow maker at the glasshouse mountains. Didn't brake on the attempt but broke on the next climb so I'm assuming it weakened it trying widow maker. Anyway got dragged to the top and pulled my axles. At that stage I didn't no what had broken. Axles were fine so I plugged the holes with rags and tried driving but it was still banging so I dropped the tailshaft. Drove home in a front wheel drive rangie. As you can see there only 10 spline axles so this would be a opportunistic to upgrade if I had the money. A locker might get me up widow maker. My friend surgested a cig locker but I think I do to many k's or tar getting to the 4wd places. Anyone had any experience with cig lockers. I don't surpose it would cost alot to try. Well assuming I can turn corners and not crash.

This is the probable cause of the brake. It was fun so I need to make it stronger so I can do it again. It was a bit wet so that didn't help my chances of making it up.

A good mate of mine has an 85 Rangie with the P76 Motor in it. He has an absolute blast but breaks a few axles here and there. I was talkin to him about upgrading, but he pointed out that at the cost of stocko 10 splines, you can buy a set before you pay for a decent set of Maxi Drives or whatever. As for the CIG locker, I wouldn't recomend it in the rear or at all in a full-time fourby like a rangie. As you say about driving on tar, it could upset you if you lose the back end in traffic.
P.S. I love your build-up! Great to see someone else here who can't just afford to throw a lot of paycheques at the local ARB store.

Hi, My 78 Rangie has cig locker in rear. Gets very twitchy in rear at speed on tar, feels like it would go into an overstr slide and end up on its roof. As far as off rd,strs ok as long as have not got big wt in rear. I'm not game to cig the front as it may fght to mutch. Im runing a P76 with 33s and so far have not snaped a half shaft, but it will in time. 10 spline are very cheap and easy to get if you dont mind swaping them out. Trouble is the broken spline can be hard to get out if the pin is cig'ed in.

I agree, cheap buildups are just as interesting as the big budget stuff. My Rangie isn't a big budget build either although I do have twin maxi's, 4.11's etc.. But this has taken nearly 10 years to get a Rangie to this stage (had about 4 Rangie in the past, just take the bits you want and sell the rest and it always ends up a cheaper build the next time around ).
Re- 10 splines. I'm suprised with 35 inch Silverstones you haven't busted more than you have at this point in time. Rangie 10 spline axles aren't known for there durability, as well as the diffs:cry:

Well it was only my second time out with 35" so didn't take long. The widow maker was the first time I'd givin it a boot. Like rocky I'll just keep fixing what breaks. My aim is only spent money on things that will transplant onto next one. The body is about at the end of it's life but I have a 4 door body waiting. Some bar work is next.

That's more like it :D Typical of crap 10 spline Rangie stuff.
I had a 10 spline ARB air locker years ago in one of my Rangies and went through axles on every 2-3 trips. Once they twist, you mmay as well bin 'em because they're garunteed to break

Alright been away for a couple of weeks. Picked up another diff off ebay on the Gold Coast as I was going down there anyway. $36 including springs, shocks, trailing arms and brakes. Had to pull it out of the wreck myself but was cheap and that was important. How long it will last is anyones guess but not costing much. Will try not to break it on sunday, Raining here now so might be a bit damp again at the glasshouse mountains. I haven't pulled the other diff yet so still not sure what went bang. Will swap them over in the next couple of days. I've picked up a 95 tdi disco at brisbane auction with a bit of a ding in front left corner. Goes well (for a diesel auto) not real sure what I'm doing with it yet. I need a 4wd for a trip to NT in winter, the disco might be the go for that. It does have 24 spline axles though, I can hear the 2 door calling out for them. Then the motor and auto plus transfer could be thrown in the 4door rangie. Time will tell, fixing the disco would be the easy way.

Pulled the old diff out and it was missing quite a few teeth off the crown wheel.

The new diff has a serrated edge on the crown wheel teeth. Don't know why. It is getting welded before going back in, we'll see how lomg it lasts.

Diff all welded up, just moving around backyard on wet grass it was trying to drive straight. will be very careful driving out to glasshouse on sunday. looking forward to seeing what it can do offroad. While moving around in the backyard before installing the rear diff I was amazed how absolutely useless a front wheel drive vehicle is. Even after letting the front 35" tyre's down to less than 10psi I was still getting stuck on wet grass. Made a bit of a mess of my lawn out back, but with the amount of rain we've been getting it'll soon recover. I used my new air rattle gun doing the diff swap, running off the converted air conditioner compressor. Have about 10 litre tank in the back. It has a pressure cutout but haven't connected it yet, really needs it because it reaches 120psi really fast. Also used it with a pressure washer using petrol to clean the new diff. Then used a blower to get all the crap out after welding up the diff. I don't have a home compressor so the rangie does a bit of idling when I need air. I'll be taking a few air tools with me when wheeling, makes work so much easier.

Second drive with the diff welded up, Bang doing a u turn on the tar. Close to home so was alright, better to find out here before driving to glasshouse mts. Pulled it out and it was center smashed luckily the center
in the old one was alright just the crown wheel in it. swapped them over and she's going again. My mate the mechanic pulled the guts out of my distributer and fixed it. The old girl sounds much sharper now, can't wait to take her for a spin.
