View Full Version : What's your all-time favourite 4WD track?
Jeez,
I've got myself stumped here. I need a hand - and make sure you give us some details about where it is, what you like about it etc etc. Don't worry, it's only a small group on the forum at the moment, so there's not much chance of crowds spoiling your favourite haunt!
Cheers,
Otis

Track or Destination?
Track - Cabbage tree lane currently
Destination - Fraser Is.
Favourite Track: Coast Trail - Robe to Beachport and then to Carpenters Rocks. Awesome scenery, great beach and dune driving.
Favourite Trek: French Line for its isolation, Cooper Creek for relaxation.
Favourite Destination: Fraser Island, if you dont know why, you havent been there.

Have to agree AJ, Carpenters Rocks to Robe takes some beating for a nice drive. Even Robe to Kingston along the beach an up to the Murry mouth is worth a look.
The best sand hills would be at the Portland Buggy Club between Portland and Nelson.
The border track between Pinnaroo and Bordertown is also a good drive.
Pritchett canyon was pretty cool at Moab, last yr, but Brewery track at Woods Point, the old deep creek No 1, or Nobs track are all good in winter. [vic high country]
Although brewery was partly graded last yr...ruined a part near the top.
Mayford spur wasnt bad either, and deep creek 2 was good, except the 80 dragging the snorkel on the ground into the creek on the off camber bit and filling it with dirt....
Oregon track down the Otways is a pearler too, steep, orange clay in a pine forrest, off camber, and no ruts... ;D
I think that about lists them in order.....for me...
forgot one....
taking a hertz rav 4 into the Litchfield nat park Lost city, all the way and out again made it a good drive.......
I love hire cars.... ;D

Burgoynes Gap, off Heyfield/Licola road. Mostly hill climbs, some easy, some quite challenging and one monster :) FJ40 loves it :)

Burgoines is not a bad road, the macallister can be a challenge when up though......been up to the bonnet many times across there.
The good swimming hole where the old shed is is full of thistles since the fires turned the water black, and people stopped going though....

cape york, the old telegragh track.
I think i like it because its fairly long and its not far between challenges.
Its not real hard but is interesting all the way, especially the northern end to the Jardine.
another one is the starke track out to ninian bay [cape melville]
Its slow going with lots of small challenges but the best bit is its fairly remote and unimproved.
will be back up there in june ....woohoo ;D

Fraser Island. Best part is watching 10 backpackers in an overloaded troopie wonder why it sinks to the diffs in the soft stuff near Indian Head ;D :D ;D
Fave track would be the French Line through the Simpson.
Fave place High Range (private property) in Townsville, FNQ. Hard track with a nice swim/camp site at the end.
Fav 4WD track - Parramatta Road, Sydney ;D
The potholes are a real test of articulation and axle clearance, not to mention handling; though the obstacles throughout the track require precise driving to avoid a costly 'off'.
RIP Porters... at least until the C4 I bought on eBay arrives.

Scenery wise: 4WD'in in the Kimberley... specifically Cape Leveque and Gibb River road some of the best this country has to offer.
For just out and away from it all: Canning Stock Route is not to be missed

A good track is the Bluff track coming off Son of a bitch track
on Mt Buggery in the Vic high country
The DNRE had a dozer up around Wonangatta last time we
were up thier,. They had destroyed miles and miles of good
4wd tracks, filled in the bog hole's, You could have driven
a crummydore to the station.

Are they the real name,s for the tracks.
Pat,
The Bore Track from Innamincka to Cameron's Corner through Bollards Lagoon HS. Not hard but diverse conditions from flat out across plains, sand hills and gibber plains.
Mitchell Plateau Track. Another track with lots of interest.

Ran up the Bore Track 2 weeks ago and enjoyed it immensely. Then used Walkers Crossing to get to Birdsville, which is also enjoyable for its diversity. The French Line (east to west) though was my favorite. Despite the article in this months mag., the long soft sand hills with constantly changing fauna were an absolute joy.
Coming back via the WAA with a detour to the Lone Gum tree and then up the AAK (Knoll) was not as demanding as a four wheel drive trip but was equally as stunning as a place to visit.
I still laugh out loud though, when I think of the beautifully wierd Oz sense of humour of whoever it was who put the Koala in the upper branches of the Lone Gum. That made it my favourite destination.

Yes Son of a bitch track and Mt Buggery are on the maps
Look them up, Not that far from Jamieson
But the real challenge is the cut through track to the bluff

There is more than 1 Mt Buggery around the Victorian High Country. There is another one up Buffalo River and probably more. Anyway I like the Victorian High Country especially around the Buffalo and Ovens Valleys. I am kinda biassed because I live so close but there are challenging tracks and the scenery is great. Spent a lot of time up that way this last summer fighting the fires. Some very loose slippery tracks at that stage. Fresh dozer work and constant traffic in bone dry soil turned the roads into bulldust. It was flowing down the hills and pooling in the runoffs. One runoff on Harry Shepards Track had at least a foot and a half of bull dust in it at one stage. We couldnt go anywhere on one day when a shower of rain went thru because everything turned to slush on the surface - a great time to be on a helipad at the top of a point on a ridge!

I've been on lots of 'em over the years, but the CSR is still my favourite - 4 X so far with another one next year, all going well. Why? The history, flora and fauna of the track are really interesting; the length, with some challenging 4WDing if it's reasonably warm (say mid 30's) and the dunes (about 1000 of 'em) are soft; the scenery, such as the Durba Hills, Durba Spring, Killagurra Gorge, Breaden Hills etc etc; and the isolation, although there's far more traffic now on the CSR than when I first did the trip in 1990. But your vehicle must be in absolutely top condition, your preparation must be spot-on in every respect, and you need to be thoroughly SENSIBLE and reasonably competent driver. Believe me I've seen some real half-back flankers out there in more trouble than a one-legged chook in a cage full of hungry foxes!!
Other great tracks? Ann Beadell across the Great Victoria Desert; the Gary Highway (in fact, all of Len Beadell's tracks); the Simpson; The Gibb River Road, especially out to all the gorges, Old Mornington and Dimond Gorge on the Fitzroy, and up to the Mitchell Plateau and Mitchell Falls and Surveyor's Pool etc; east from Esperance (south coast of WA) and along the beach at Israelite Bay for about 80 kms to where the cliffs start then up the scarp to follow the old overland telegraph line east along the top of the cliffs. The list goes on and on - I can give you more if you want 'em!!!!
Is it just me but why are 80% of the great tracks in either WA or NT/SA central deserts area.
enought to make this Queensland jealous.
I hope I get to do more before they are closed off by the small minded and bigotted.
well....most of them seem to be anywhere but Vic, but thats because most probably havent really seen the high country, or the rainforests of the Otways..... ;D

G'day shed guy
Yes, the high country and the Otways are on my list of places still to see. One of my sons was over there last year and raved about them - must get over to your neck of the woods again in the very near future.
If you need any info, feel free to PM me, have spent nearly 0 yrs visiting both places on a very regular basis.

Mmm. Skytrek..nah, Scottish highlands..Kimberley...Cape?...Tassie?...can't decide...
Here I go again sidetracking! I don't know about tracks but I get off on being somewhere someone else was a long time ago. I operated a traxcavator loading clay out of pits all over Melbourne once and one pit was at Keilor in one of those big gorges. Across the other side of creek they had a big shed made of several Modern garages meandering along the bank like a snake. Apparently it was one of those sites with 4,000 year old Aboriginal relics. The trucks under me had long lead so I had plenty of time ot meself and, with the machine switched off and hardly a sound (despite freeway and Tulla airport) down in me little gully, I swear I could feel a blackfella stalking a roo.
Same feeling but lightyears later came over me when on top of a hill at Groganville I could see Mt Mulligan some 20 miles away and the Mitchell with the remains of the old washed away bridge another 10 Ks in the other direction. Blackfellas that could see that back early in the 20th century probably still ate people. Bridge and Mulligan are steeped in recent history (early 20th).
History, only thing that gives me bigger goosebumps is gold nuggets, which I've seen but not me own............yet!
Hey Pastki, are you the fella went to Cape, and that I should pester for me "camera under the bonnet" special so as I can get knowledgable for when it DOES rain?

At the moment the fav for me is on a private property at Lowmead about 90klms from Bundy, fairly tame by 4wd standars but brilliant camping. Having said that though I'm sure things will change now that I'm over the whole afraid to scratch the shiny new car phase. ;)

Gotta agree there splodge, especially around dusk when they are running back to their campsites. funny buggas :D
anywhere around where i grew up, arnhem land n.t. ( fair dinkum, still got family there) struggling to find good challenging stuff in nsw that is legal/ethical etc.. to attempt. i am dead set against tresspassing fence cutting etc. just so i can go for a drive, does happen sadly enough. i have found a few n.p. / state forest tracks a bit of fun, stockton beach is a good sand/ unstable surface/ascent-descent playground. i will keep my beady eye on this thread though for more nsw stuff (remote travel on hold due to family stuff just now :()

Southport lagoon is only closed june to sept and normally theres no gate....... not many people are crazy enough to try it then, and it is hard core... when i was down last we had 4 4x4s we broke 3 straps ( we took ours home ) and saw a heap more broken and other parts including a wind screen to the beach its an hour walk or 4 hour drive.
