Hi Guy's
Got myself a 1HZ Diesel .It's got 250km on the clock .Good service history. On start up, which starts first kick, it gives out a big puff of blue smoke . Slight blue smoke going up hill under load . Pull up turn off wait 5 min start slight blue smoke again . Is this a worry or will i just drive the thing and get on with it. Thanks Guy's.

Blue smoke is oil burning.
It is caused by oil getting past the rings and being burnt with the fuel.
Or it is leaking down the valves past the seals.

It can be difficult to diagnose. The leaky valve guide seal usually leaks when the engine is off,so when you start it there is a big puff of blue smoke until its burnt up.

Worn oil rings smoke all the time and get worse when its hot and under load.

A compression test might be the best place to start.

Its a worry because sooner or later a cop may pull you over.

I have similar symptoms.

However:
I only get smoke under load accelerating 2nd gear but not foot to the floor. Cant see it when driving, only when following. from 3rd gear onwards less smoke, and none in the high gears when cruising.

The smoke is not in great plumes and is more darkish grey in colour. Not black and not very blue.

Motor is still young at 280,000km and oil gets changed on a regular basis.
Doesnt seem to lose much oil, dipstick still reads full after 2800km since last change, with no leaks.

Is this kind of smoke just the nature of the beast?

Injectors chaps when was the last time you had them cleaned it should be done at least every 100k the nozzles get crap build up on them and then dont spray/atomise the fuel properly. You should also notice an improvement in power/mpg

We have 7 landcruisers at work all with under 20,000 Ks and they all blow smoke when working hard (up hill, heavy load).

The smoke is blue and light, not the long lasting black smoke you see from some diesels.

That's a silly question because you don't have a mechanical cell in your brain and wouldn't understand any of the answers. Just take it to a mechanic you dumb nut.

Righto woozle, thanks for the heads up. I will check over the service records for when they were last done.

The mechanic thinks my bus is in good order (it has been there recently for other maintenance, in case that incredibly helpful dumb nut jibe was directed at me), but the injectors have not been checked since I took ownership of the car. I have been maintaining it by the records kept by previous owner.

This is my first diesel so I was curious enough to ask a similar question. I thought this was what forums were for?

Sorry diesel80 I was not having a go at anyone for asking a question, and indeed, that is what the forum is for and it works well. Kennyponch is a mate of mine and this is the first time I had come accross a post from him and wanted to introduce myself to him in a big way.

Bad injectors wont cause blue smoke. They cause black/dark grey smoke.
Injectors cost about $300-400 a set for 6 cyl so you need to be sure before you start spending money;)
