Thanks Mate, yeah enjoy the challenge of making stuff. No probs with the motor ( touch wood). only drama i did have was when a small airline fitting was found in the main tank, all the chrome from the fitting somehow got through the fuel filter & stuffed the injector pump & injectors. Also had the MAF sensor replaced under warrenty a few years ago.

Hi, the GU looks great. How do you find your suspension set up as i am thinking of doing something the same.As i do not want to go to high.I find it works great for what i do,( mostly touring). When I went to Weipa 2 yrs ago , there where 4 of us, the back loaded up, & towed a trailer with 3 44's of deisel amd other gear, & it just floated along the corigations & rough roads without any drama's. As for other wheeling it works pretty good, considering.

hey dave, thats some neat home handy work mate!
you a boilery or somethin'? I wanna do a dual wheel carrier on the back of my hilux, not that you see to many of them on hilux's.
Thats a nice lookin truck you've got there too, do you get out often?
Deadly GU
28-01-2008, 07:50 AM
Thanks Luxxxy, na not a boily i'm a fitter . Shouldn't be to hard to make a carrier for your Lux, i made 1 for my Triton I used to have. There's a couple running town with them, a white single cab & a blue dual cab.
Not happy with my carriers, they flex to much, so making new ones out of 1 1/2" pipe, other 1's where made from 5ox25x2mm box.

28-01-2008, 07:57 AM
Dave , i think you will find that 50 x 50 x 2.5 or 3 will do the job best, i can't quite work out how much width you have at the top of the carrier, but if you can get that box section in there , i would use it.
i dont think you will be happy with the pipe out come either.
Deadly GU
28-01-2008, 12:12 PM
Thanks Bop Smoo, I'll see how the pipe goes 1st, only cause i've already cut and had it bent up. I'm using heavy wall pipe & it'll be braced as well. If it doesn't work i'll try your suggestion, cause i've got enough room to use 50x50.

Thanks rugged_rolly, Nah mate it's not to rude to ask. It cost me about $80 all up:- The checker plate sheet i went halves in with a mate $60, $5 to get cut up for me at a sheet metal place, and about $5 for the hinges , $10 for the elastic straps and clips, & about $5 for the chain and screws .( I originally used clothes line cord for the straps, but changed it to light chain)

Just a small update, finally under my house is dry enough to do some things, so started making mark2 of the wheel carriers. Got the right side mostly finished, just need to put another brace in & paint them when the weather allows. Already they are alot stiffer then the 1st 1's.
Thanks to bop smoo for getting me the steel at a good price.

hey Dave, i still think you should have gone past the wheel mount with the upright, this would have then allowed for a slightly longer stiffening brace. When you cut the end off you have marked don't forget to cap the end of the box,the moisture will love to sit in there.
But all in all a good job and a lot stronger,it should now hold up to your big trip.

Hey Dan, yeah i forgot about going up higher until after i put the brace in this morning, but it's very stiff now, hardly moves at all. Going down to Clarke Rubber shortly to get a couple of plastic caps. Will soak with lanolin before I put the cap in.

If possible i would be fairly keen on seeing a few instructions & measurements as well, I have been going to make a bar for mine for a while now and a bit of experience would go a long way to getting started on it. MarkI was originally going to replace the standard 1 with the CAV, but a mate who works in the deisel industry said to leave the standard 1 in & put the CAV in before it. As he said " you can never have to much filtration " , & after seeing all the crap that was in the standard filter when I just changed it I didn't have to think twice about putting the CAV in.

Hey Dan, yeah mate there's nothing really wrong with the 1st bar, i'm just being a bit picky i suppose, just going to do things a different way, hopefully a bit lighter. The 1st bar may go up for sale when the new 1's finished.....not sure yet. Why not keep the alloys & get aset of black sunny's:D My sunny's run 'Cruiser offset which gives me a wider track, so will be abit more stable when the roof rack & gear is on.

Well it's only 6 weeks until i go to the Cape:thumb: . About the only thing left to sort out is water storage. Went to a couple of 4wd shops in Rocky yesterday to get some info. Tossing up between a 55ltr Flexi Tank water bladder or a poly water tank. Was wondering what peoples opinions are on these???

Maybe another cheaper option Dave, now that you have the roof rack, is a couple of lengths of 100dia PVC pipe with ends and a couple of taps plumbed into each end. You could attach these to either side of the rack. Up out of the way from stray rocks as well. Just an idea

Yeah had thought of that Skye, but don't want to put that much extra weight up high. The tanks i'm looking at go between my draws & back seat.

The flexi bladders seem to be a great idea when it comes to usage of limited space but how easy it it to get the last few ltrs out? do they drain as well as a hard/poly tank would?
It would be a personal choice i guess & a Q of available space also. Those flexi tanks can be used in the rear footwell also so maybe 1 there & a poly in the rear could be a good option, you can never have too much drinking water where your going surely!!!;)

Hey Celts, yeah, yeah not sure how easy it is to drain the last couple of ltr's out, but I have a small 12v bilge pump that may help. The poly tank i'm looking at has a built in pump, which is pretty handy. As for space, the bladder will fit perfectly on the floor between the deaws & the back of the rear seat, whereas the tank will fit there just as well, but stick up a bit.
And yes, your right , you can never have to much water. There will also be other water containers in the car aswell in case something happens to the main one.

HELP..........does anyone know of an easy way to remove the heat sheild fron around the turbo on the 3ltr's??
Hey Deadly, not sure on the heat sheild removal, but I'm interested to know how your truck goes with the new exhaust. I rang Beaudesert Exhausts and got a quote, seems a resonable price. Just curious as to what sort of a difference it'll make before I commit funds. I bet you can't wait for the trip, not long to go now...
Cheers

Small update:- Fitted up the new exhaust system this morning, only took me about 2 1/2 hrs to pull the old one out & fit the new one in. Have only taken it for a drive round town after I fitted it, but has made a huge difference, spools up a lot quicker, seems to have lost most of the turbo lag. :thumb:
While i was going , I fitted an oil catch can I picked up from SuperCheap yesterday, so we'll see how much of a difference that makes.

Yeah thought about that Skye, but they reckon it's all part of the complete package, & it works better with the muffler on. May get it modified down the track so i can run it with or without the muffler to test the theory out.:D

Thanks mate. It's not the best pic, but it's the hose that comes from breather on top of the engine (I'm pretty sure it's for the crank case breather) & goes into the hose that comes from the air filter box to the turbo. The original hose is only about 200mm long. You have to take the plastic cover of the intercooler ( on 3ltrs) to get to the fitting on top of the motor. It's not a hard job to do, just a bit time consuming.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.......Dave

Well the back end of the Patrol is down to it's undies again. This morning I pulled the rear bar off to do some bracing & some tiding up that I wasn't happy with the 1st time. I'm still going to make another 1 when I come back from the Cape ( which I leave for in 4 weeks time ) , just don't have time to buld another 1 before I go:crazy:
It's all welded, braced & puttied up ( again) . Will probably start sanding tomorrow after work, readied to be painted on friday.

Thanks mate. The idea behind the catch can is to try to stop the oil from the crank case breather (that goes back into the air intake between the air box & turbo) going into the turbo & into the intercooler.

Here are some getter pic's for where the hose's run for the catch can. They are the ones with the hose clamps on them. it comes from the top or the motor, goes into the can, then out & into the air intake.

P.S. my 55ltr water bladder finally arrive at ARB in Rocky, so going for a quick trip to Rocky tomorrow to pic it up.
