hi Guys i have a 2003 Ra turbo deisel rodeo automatic which i have had since new
it has had a on going problem that a number of dealers could not fix when under warranty.
after i take it through water and we are not talking river crossing it losses power and the the transmission does not seem to no what gear to be in
it has been a pain since new and at one stage on the freeway in a bad thunderstorm it stated to play up and lose power
in the bush its great but if you cross through water or mud it plays up until it dries but if its very wet (from on hole to the next)it gets so bad that it does not have enogh power to pull its self out
this problem is starting to get me down
does any have an idea???
ps it does have a snorkel fitted

I had the same problem with my rodeo. the cause of the problem could be a stuck egr valve, its located at the back of the inlet manifold. i had mine lose power after heavy rain once, found that there was water on the motor side(centre) of air cleaner (not good) wiped it out drove for another 500m and it cleared up and ran fine. You may not have had the rework done on the egr valve accuator (located behind air cleaner box on right hand inner guard). reworked item has third vacum hose that runs to the rubber hose between aircleaner box and air fow meter.

thanks ducky
i looked at the valve and it only has 2 hoses to it one runs from the erg valve and the other to what looks like a pump on the back of the alternator
the erg valve on the manifold looks like its been leaking some black sooty looking stuff is this normal?
also i hosed the control valve and it seemed to make no difference to the engine!!
what should i try next

My ute showed signs of black soot on the inlet manifold at the base of egr valve played up. has since disappeared since being replaced. Sounds like your ute has not had the egr solenoid rework yet either. time to visit holden i think.

I've had a number of Jackaroo's on various trips exhibit the same symptoms!!! And ultimately every occurrence has been attributed to the wiring harness connector from the auto getting water (or moisture) into it, either from road spray or water crossings. When that joiner gets wet, the computer gets a distorted or garbled signal and accordingly decides that summat is wrong with the auto, the engine, or both; so it drops the whole engine & auto control system into 'limp home' mode until the connection dries out! The different levels of problem have been described as firstly the auto only going into limp home, then the engine only, and finally both!

And to sorta confirm that diagnosis, with a couple of the vehicles we pulled that plug apart and sprayed it with moisture excluder and dried it all off, plugged it back up and the car's been fine from there on until the next rain shower or creek crossing! It was worse up the Cape when it was humid AND wet! One of the vehicles with me up the Cape when this problem arose ended up getting shipped back to Cairns, but the 'limp home' thingy was only ONE of its problems!! The hi-tech injector/pump do-dahs failed too, and not only were there no spares, there wasn't anyone game to touch the car!

Cheers & Good Luck!

Not sure you may need to talk to a holden dealer. You might find that you can fit it yourself, looks straight forward. I think there might be an ecm reprogaming needed too.

My ute is a manual, so i can,t tell you about any problems associated with the auto side of things.
