the Disco's are a good 4wd.
They are that cheap i think because of the fuel price these days. The parts are available you just need to know where to look. we have a few landrover suppliers on the books that can do and get just about anything for them. They are one the best stock standard offroad vehicles we have ever owned and we have owned a few. the only problem we find with the disco's is the parts aren't as cheap ,not like the Nissan or Toyotas.

They are cheap if you know where to get them, never go to a dealer, but places like Karcraft, British4wd and others are a fraction of dealer parts.
2002 Discos don't have a centre diff so be aware that you can't lock that model into 4WD, after market parts will need to be sort to be able to lock it in 4WD.

Sorry but i did read your post and my D2 is heaps cheaper for parts than my mates 100 cruiser i've found that D2 parts are cheaper than Nissan and Toy parts through comparing mates with Toyos and Nissans.
Cheapest parts place would be Karcraft in Sydney

I have sometimes had parts imported from England and the US, especially the US at the moment with the $ the way it is, even with postage it's bloody cheaper than here.
I'm getting cylicone intercooler hoses for my D2 $190 full set delivered to my door from Total Rovertech in Sth Aust ;)

I think the general population thinks that land rovers are unreliable hence why there market price is cheap European cars in general second hand are cheap
BUT THERE WRONG
As for parts they are dearer then your ford and Holden and that of your average vehicle so don't be fooled thinking there cheap if you go genuine
but as Baz stated there are cheaper places to get parts from even if you buy over seas that makes prices cheaper

I think the obvious answer to the original question is pretty simple. In a city enviornment you will be looking at best 20-22ltrs to the 100km. On a good day with the wind behind you on a downhill run 75 lts will be chewed up before you hit the 400km mark. So to sum up at lets say $1.20 a Ltr times 75 ltrs is $90 and bingo is the answer.
MY disco1 with 35's is so bad I have to run along side it with a bucket of fuel at about 300km. Ps I know they are a 90 ltr tank its just the fuel light comes on at about 75lts

Out of curiosity - what makes them so thirsty grover do you know? How much do they weigh? My brother in law just signed the papers for a 2000 V8 Disco and now i'm worried for him and his family's budget!
For reference my 1UZ V8 converted 4Runner on 33's, 2.1t gross; will stay under 20l/100 around town without taking it easy. As low as 12l/100 on the open road.

Fuel inefficiency is mainly due to old technology. The basic block design has been in Land rovers since 1956 (I think) and was designed by buick a few years before that. When you compare them to other makes and see the difference amount of valves, cams, sensors etc. you start to get the picture why this is so. You can get a fair bit better efficiency by working with after market ECU's though.

I have heard of guys getting figures of 12 to 14l/100k but on the whole an average would be around 18l/100k and they don't seem to vary much, even when towing, well from listening to the guys on AULRO anyway.
The CDL is the thing you should look into as the 2002 model doesn't have anything in the transfer case to lock the centre diff like the D1 has.
