Are the roof lights on the cherokee classified as roof lights or work lights? It is my understanding that roof lights aren't exactley legal to be used on road.

Also, I noticed they are mounted close to the leading edge of the roof. Does it light up the bonnet?

You can tell when they are on. It lights up the edge of the roof.

Not sure what they are classified as but they obviously passed ADR if the renegades came from factory like that :)

If it lights up the edge of the roof can you see it from inside the cabin? So it doesn't light up the bonnet?

Can't remember if it was these or the X-trails that came with the roof lights, but there were ADR issues so whichever manufacturer it was had to downgrade the bulbs - essentially making them overgrown 'clearance lights'.

Marc 1 is correct......the Australian KJ roof lights are much lower wattage than US ones.

I have lights on my car roof. I sat and read through the blue slip requirements for nsw, nowhere does it say anything about roof lights brightness or position ( above windscreen), I even told the examiner of the jeep problem which I had heard previously. are the rules different for new cars getting ADR compared to passing blue slip? mine passed with narva spoties on the roof rack.

when talking about roof lights, the distinction must be made between clearance lights and other similar lights used on trucks and driving or spot lights....

clearance lights are specifically covered in ADR13, with positioning, brightness, colour etc all defined

driving and spot lights are also defined in the same ADR, and must be mounted to the front of the vehicle, and not reflect light off the vehicle into the drivers eyes and be less than 1.4M above the ground if the vehicle was built before 1991....

i emailed the RTA before fitting mine, and also spoke to a few people in the know, and got told the same thing...they are illegal for road use....a friend of mine had a chat to a copper about it, and was told the cops are more concerned about people using them than having them....basically keep a set of painted covers on them, or have a quick release system so you can remove them when you don't need them, and you should be alright....

In W.A you are aloud to have 6 forward facing lights, roof lights must be monted on/before the front half of the car.... So in w.a no restriction on how many (if you have 6 + put covers on them) but just a restriction on where they are..

What i don't get with the whole light think is, they say not to be used on the road...... Who drives around with there brights on when cars are coming, i don't see how this can effect other road users if they turn them off, just like factory high beams.

I would of thought police and the Gov would praise extra lighting for safety, if you can see more on the road your going to drive a lot safer..
