ok, i thought it would be best to ask the more technically minded people involved in this forum. now the front diff on my live axle hilux seems to be making a knocking sort of sound when i am engaged in 4wd with the hubs locked. so today i had the transfer case in neutral, and the hubs unlocked, the front drive shaft spins freely, with only right hub locked, it still spins freely, but with just the left hub locked, the drive shaft doesnt spin.

now i know the left hand side is because its locked into the drive of the wheels, but what can be said about the right hand side? would people be saying its a broken cv?

any advice would be appreciated, as this car is a daily driver for the moment. so only have weekends to pull stuff apart and put back together.

cheers, jackson

ah had a fair guess it was. might have to pull out the tools again... is it very difficult to put a new one in? and where is best place to source the parts?

cv, followed by axle, followed by stub axle, followed by freewheeling hubs, followed by diff center, followed by wheel bearings. It could be a little bit of nething broken off and jamming that side. Best thing is pull it down friday night, find whats wrong so u have saturday to locate the parts and rebuilt by sunday!

^^^if it was only eva that easy LOL ^^^

Yes, something is broke. but like they said above, on the left hand side not on the right.

It the propshaft won't spin when the right hand side is unlocked but the left is locked, something must be broken on the right (or something different on each side :D). Most likely a CV in my opinion - in which case it could be dangerous to drive on the road in this condition (can cause the steering to bind/lock up).

If you've never had the hubs apart before, it would be best to get a hold of a workshop manual. If it's a CV i'd go for a genuine (NTN brand IIRC) 2nd hander from a wrecker rather than a cheap chinese repco one. With the right tools and a little practice a CV can relisticly be changed in under an hour. If you haven't done the bearings in a while may as well do them and axle seals (which are most likely torn now anyway) whilst you've got it apart.

Actually your right, now that I think about it. It would be a problem on the right. I was thinking back to front.
