View Full Version : Help! I think I've broken something?

I noticed today on my way home from work that my sierra is making a very noticable rattling noise from the driveline when just rolling along out of gear or with the clutch in above 50kph. I sounds like it's coming from around the rear drive shaft, diff or possibly axles. It's a wide track 1989 sierra with a swift GTi twin cam 1.3. It runs a lockrite rear locker and I just installed a calmini lift kit with driveshaft spacers included. I checked the drive shaft spacers and they still seem bolted in fine and couldn't see anything un toward. Could it be my axles or just the locker being noisy? I've never noticed this noise before but as I don't often roll out of gear I may have missed it. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

jack it up and turn/wiggle stuff. see it you can track it down.
that's all the advice i can give, i have never own a zook.
if it doesn't do it when it's in gear driving along i would suspect gearbox/clutch area.

Ok I'm just tossing around some ideas here as I have never had anything to do with the suzuki's.
started after the lift:- could it be the tail shaft or yokes are hitting any crossmembers/bash plates?
as for it making the noise with clutch in or with it out of gear my guess would be that with engine not doing a great ammount of rev's, you can hear the noise more clearly and not the cause of the noise

I think I am going to put it down to the locker for now, until something actually does break :D I have listened to it well and made it do it but it doesn't do it at low speed so I assume it has something to do with the inertia in the locker at higher speeds. Sometimes it's easier to forget about these things.
I was expecting someone to bag out the calmini kit too... It's sweet so far though so I'm not complaining

Did you possibly let the drive shaft come out of the spline when putting the spacer in and not line the Uni's up when putting the shaft back in....? If they arent lined up it may cause serious vibration out of gear or after a certains speed...?

YES! I did do that, so the uni's have to align as in the cross part has to line up on either end (if you get what I mean?). Clever thinking there MUD-PIG, I'll get onto that.

I had a similar sound recently, rolling along with clutch in their was a noise coming from the rear diff. Could also just hear it when driving also. I have a lockright diff lock in the rear too. Turns out that the locking caps in the diff had loosened thus allowed too much play between the ring gear and pinion gear, which started with chipping (thus the noise) and a pew days later out playing with some serious banging and crunching as i stripped about 8-10 teeth off the pinion gear.
If you have checked everything else that people have mentioned i would pull the diff centre out and just check it for insurance. Its what i should have done.
Cheers

I'll try the Tailshaft first then if it persists I'll try and break the diff and give me an excuse to get air lockers :D

Alright I lined up the tail shaft unis and it's alot better now, the nois is pretty much gone. Thanks mud-pig and the rest of you guys.
