As the heading says. My son just bought an FJ45 with a 3B motor (4 cylinder diesel). The motor is stuffed so we are looking at replacing it with an identical one. We don't want to fit V8s etc, just looking for any feedback as to the suitability of the motor. I realise that it is 4 cylinder, but that might just slow him down to live longer.

from what I have seen and hear'd they are one of the most reliable and best suited powerplants for the 40's and 45's if you wish to stay with a stocker diesel, they are also relitively simple to fit a turbo to if your son wants more grunt in the future.........just out of intrest what was actually wrong with the old one?.......also I have a mate with a fairly good 2F that he may part with for a small ammount of coin if you wish to go for a petty engine, but you would have to source a transmittion to suit (with the gov rebate would cost about $500 to get fitted with a gas system)
my bro in law had one with a turbo added that he put in a old 70s trayback . He flogged it around as a daily driver for over 10 yrs , up cape york and every spot in between . The motor was secondhand when he bought it and was still going fine when he sold it.

Original owner siezed it and cracked the head. Only the head is off at the moment so I don't know what damage is done to te bottom end. Only got it home on Sunday so I haven't even looked at the bores. What is a 2F? If it is a 6 cyl petrol then I have one at home minus the carby which I put on my 253.

3B is just a smaller version of a 2H and not a power house, very reliable and not too thirsty.

I dont want to be smart, but if it is an fj45 then it has not got the factory motor in it anyway.
If the motor is factory then it would be a BJ45. If it is an fj45 then at one stage it would have had the 2f and matching box in it anyway.
If you have to upgrade, I personaly wouldnt put another 3B in, or a 2F. I would put a 13bT or a 14BT. I have put a 14B (not turbo) in my bJ73 and it eats the 3BT motor that I had. Dont get me wrong the 3B with the turbo was good, but the direct injected 14B is much better. I cant wait until I get it turboed.
Cheers.

Ok the 40 series cruiser which are available with diesel engines are the BJ40 which came with B series 3.0L I-4, which were available during 1978-80, the BJ42 had a 3B series 3.4L I-4 and was available during the 1980-84. The HJ47 was the troopy which had a 2H 4.0 I-6, which is the same for the HJ45 (ute). And the ute and troopy was first available with the H engine which was 3.8L I-6. The FJ's only came with Petrol engines.
Also the 2H and 3B are totally different engines, the intake and exhaust are on opposite sides.

Thanks for the response guys, I am aware that the FJ45 was originally a petrol. I like the idea of a 3B as the power (or lack of power), because I am trying to slow him down. I don't have any data as to the adaptor, gearbox or diff ratios at the moment. I have a 1970 FJ45 with a Holden 253 and have rebuilt both diffs, box and T/case.

ok that changes things, the motor mounts, and bellhousing (different spline on the output shats, but I could very well be wrong) will need to be changed, as well as the diffs, but the tcase. doesn't have to be changed, I think.
Andy
PS My dad bought myself and my little brother a BJ42, because it was slow, but my little bro still managed to get 2 speeding tickets. And I have gotten it up to 120Kph

Yes engine mounts are in a different place and are different. Gearbox imput shaft is a different length. Diffs are the same transfer is the same, radiator inlet may be on a different side, (but that is easy changed). will probably need the wiring and relays etc to run the fuel edic shut off motor. exhaust will need to be modified.
Cheers.

350 holleys suck on 2f's. they don't run for the life of them on angles.
a 3b is a decent powerplant
just as much torque as the 2h, and less head problems.
stick another in, and call it good

The 3B has masses of horsepower (66hp) and it will run for ever. Put one in my 45 about 1 yr ago, and haven't looked back. Uses less fuel than any other motor that I looked at. As long as you keep the servicing and general maintance up to it, it will last forever. When looking for a replacement, ask for a 3B for a dyna, it will sound stupid, but you will be quoted a lesser price than one for a landcruiser. Most motor places see a 3B for a cruiser as a rare item, but they are the identical motor as in the dyna. But expecting to pay around the $1500 to $2000 mark.
