Hi guys. I've owned my '92 Hilux for about a year now and Im getting the itch to modify it. Ive sold all my other toys so this is all ive got to play with. Anyway i love the idea of supercharging it. I was looking at a sc14 off a toyota (celica i think 2L I6) or an Eaton m62. However NO ONE in Adelaide wants to bother with it. Most places just wanna stick a turbo on it. I'd prefer a supercharger cause i don't wanna have to rev it if i don't have to. Can't stand turbo lag!.

Anyone on the forums done this? Any ideas? Comments? :)

turbos should outlast a motor and as far as I know superchargers won't although they are better for forced induction. You might get about 40-50,000km out of after market superchargers. They are realy only good if you do racing and replace parts often. One reason you won't find superchargers on trucks except for some rare US motors.

Rough,

I have seen a supercharged Lux over here in Perth a few years back. It had a 2.8 in it. The charger was the SC14 also.

To be honest, it sounded totally ridiculous from the outside. It was a well kept lux, but sounded like a bag of crap with that noisy assed charger in it, squeaking and whistling and carrying on, this was idling at a servo too :)

Either way, the lux seemed to go ok, it was pushing some big boots too. (only saw it on the black top).

Maybe the Eaton has better manners? The commodore chargers dont seem to be as noticeable from the outside.
If you go the SC14 route, it should work out alright, but everyone will know about it. You ever heard a corrolla seca with a 4AGZE in it? Madness.

I would probably go for Diesel Gas myself, we get 3K back over here in Perth so it wont cost too much. Can get some good power according to those that have done it. Better economy (well sort of, just substituting some diesel for cheaper LPG). They can tune it for power or economy, in your case power would be the go, mine economy (thirsty landcruiser), I think that diesel gas company is based in SA also, may be worth a look.
[No affiliation with this mob], and as yet have no direct experience with this mod, so don't take this as a guarentee or a recommendation :P

Good luck mate. :thumb:

Note: 4AGZEs use SC12s factory.
I thought the same thing for my 2H, however was convinced otherwise with my torque band being spot on for turbo. Anyways, contact Sprinterboy and ask him how his aftermarket turbo 2.8 4 runner goes, you wont be dissapointed. It pulls uphill very nicely and doesnt struggle when towing. He also has the only AE86 4AGZE SC14 in oz, so he can tell you about both SC14s and turbo 2.8 4 runners.
The good thing about toyota super chargers is that they can be wired to come on boost when you want, but this is a lot harder with diesels due to them normally running off of throttle position sensors. But it could certainly be done with a little imagination and some idea on electronics.

the SC14 is a 1.4Litre SuperCharger, the SC12 is a 1.2Litre...

Ok, First up, A Turbo'd 2.8 has no real "Lag". you put your foot down, turbo spools up, you hit 3000rpm, you change into next gear... For around town stuff, the turbo is hardly creating much boost. But it's great for when you need to get past grandma doing 50kph in an 80zone.

Fitting an SC14 to the 2.8 may be do-able. But I can't see where your going to fit it. there isn't alot of free space to fit the charger.

Here is a pic of the charger.

Air-in pipe is closest to the block. so it flow's from right to left looking at this pic

I haven't had a really good look over the engine bay in my runner to see if there could be a place for it.

The turbo lag on the 2.8 desiel is hardly anything. And from driving an NA desiel 2.8 to mine, It's massive improvement. you won't regreat it

At the end of it, I guess you really have to weigh up your options, what you can afford, and what you want, An SC'd motor will give you more torque lower down, but it might be more of a hassle to fit up that a turbo. Things like that.

If you need some tech info on the Chargers shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can dig up for you.

Cheers

J

PS - In answer to your PM, I live in Canberra.

As sprinterboy sed ther is basically no lag with a turbo'd 2.8D as the useful rev range finishes after 3000rpm, nothing like ud experience in a petrol vehicle anyhow. I too hav a 2.8D 4runner with turbo installed, I push 33x12.5's on 4.56 diffs and can still dust off standard hiluxes by a long shot. The turbo method is trialed and proven, and ther is alot of potential for biggish power form the 2.8D. I only run 7psi but know of blokes running 14psi on fully rebuild boost compensated 2.8D and they haul arse big time.
