I have a 92 hilux dual cab with the 22R motor. Over the last few months it has been harder to start from cold and coughs and splutters for some time prior to running well. Once it is going it has the bad habit of conking out at the lights but restarts straight away.

When it has been working hard up the beach it is almost impossible to start.

When it is going it goes well with no loss in power or performance (if you can call the blinding power of a 22R "perfromance".

I've had it looked at recently and all they could come up with was that the coil lead was shorting out however they didn't replace it but rather put a zip tie on it so it wouldn't touch any metal! It hasn't fixed it.

I don't know why but it seems like a fuel problem to me just the way it misfires and conks out. As a token effort I put a new fuel filter on it and cut the old one open. It was chocka full of black crap and particles. I just wonder if it needs a carby kit through it or the fuel pump looked at.

Has anybody had any similar problems or suggestions?

Does sounds like a fuel issue. If it was spark related it should be missing all the time.
Being that your fuel filter was blocked some of it may be in the carby now, so I'd give it a clean before going all out on a rebuild one.

Big Boots,

Fuel was my thought given the way it was running. Doesn't seem to me to be a electrical problem given the symptoms. Just changed the filter so i'll give that a try.

Thought that the filter might have been restricting the fuel flow and when you stop at the lights it starves itself and conks out until you restart and get the fuel running again. Certainly not a mechanic but trying to ratoinalise why it is happening.

The annoying thing is that when you take it to some mecahnics if it doesn't exhibit the problem when they look at it they tell you there is nothing wrong with it and hand it back to you. Whatever happened to a bit of problem solving? Seems like the big places are only interested doing book services and just replacing parts rather than using their heads. I'll be annoyed if I am up the beach and it s#$ts itself.

try a carby cleaner in your tank of fuel, i just threw one in mine an it idles heaps better, but im putting my v6 in soon so im avoiding spending money on the 22r mine gets shithouse fuel economy as well

Mate you must have read my mind. I put a bottle of carby cleaner into the tank yesterday. Let's see how that goes. Hopefully might clean up the crap that accumulates in the lines and carby.

I think the fuel filter might have been the problem. I only put the new filter on a couple of days ago and it runs/starts/idles so much better. Even the missus reckons that she can tell the difference! It's never run better.

When I cut the old filter up, apart from black crap and particles, I noticed that the paper element was stiff as a board and looked like it wouldn't let any fuel through. I hope I may have sorted it out for the price of a filter.

Now i've just got to work out how to squeeze another 200kw out of the old girl!:thumb:
