Gday fellas,i thinking about buying a series 2 landrover SWB with a holden red motor in it.Just a couple questions.Do they have over heating issues?
I have had holdens all my life and know reds back to front, does the drive line handle the red alright?A mate had one years ago and it used to scream at 50mph.Can you still get over drive boxes for them?

I have had a couple of red motors in series 2 and never had a heating prob yet should be able to get 60 mph from one and fairly overdrives from 4x4 im Melbourne. plenty of parts for all landies.

Tops, the price is right, its very rough but runs.I wont be getting it registered.Probably use it on my mates farm as a shooting rig.Anything you can think of that is easy to check before i buy?$350.

Watch the diffs, if there the orinal rover diffs they could break but if there the salsbury as were fitted to orininal landy 6's youll be pretty right.

Is there a big visible difference?

Yep rover diffs are small and nice and smooth all over basically and a salsbury is large and square lookin with squarer edges here and there from memory.

the salsbury diffs have a much larger centre, so the rear should have a bigger centre than the front if it has a salsbury.

other than that rust is the main thing, especially in the firewall, they rot badly, footwells are another area. Take a screw driver with you and get underneath and have a scratch around the chassis they can rust badly aswell.

a salisbury axle has a bolted on diff pan ( the bit with the level plug in it )
a rover diff has a welded on diff pan

So the salisbury is the same as the holden one then?Like in the v8 hq?

There is not much wrong with rover diffs.
Landrovers dont break axles ,drivers do.
Over drive is the way to go if you can find one.
The gear boxes handle the power OK , but some times the overdrives dont.

Hey mate, I had a series 2a, with a 186 in it...

I don't know about overheating issues as the original radiator in mine was stuffed when I got it... I replaced it with a HQ V8 radiator.... no problems at all.... the original radiators are quite a bit smaller though...

Mine had an overdrive and they still scream at about 100km....

If you are using it as a pigger or a farm truck them I doubt you will be going 100km anyway so I wouldn't worry to much..

Overall, they are great trucks, I wish I never sold mine..
