Just been though this drama in my Rangie, You can get a detroit locker for it but they are around $1000 or spend a little more and go an air locker or Maxi drive Vacuum locker both are under $2000.

Best (and probably most cost effective within reason) option would be an ARB air locker. Discos of that vintage have 24 splines so the std axle set-up will do the job to a degree.
Personally I'm not a big fan of auto lockers, I like to dictate when I engage the bloody thing not the other way round

Mate, i have just got all the gear to do both my diffs, i wanted maxi drive front and rear but they arent doing the front with axles for standard disco CV's only the larger County ones which means another $1000 on top of the 2k for the diff kit so i went for maxi axles and ARB Air lockers, comes in at aout $200 a diff cheaper, maybe more if you can save more on the lockers than i did.
Bear in mind that the retail price on the Air locker is $1220 and the Maxidrive Locker is $2000 or so, but that 2k includes the upgraded axles so they arent really comparable on price.
If your mate drives steadily and likes to crawl up tracks not use right foot the standard axles will do for now, but start saving for some maxi's, with a locker they can be easy to break depending on how he drives. matt

Or get a TruTrac limited slip diff. I have one of these in the rear of my 88 Rangie and I am happy with its performance. I am not an extreme off roader, more of a tourer with the occasional challenge thrown in.

I had a maxi drive in the last disco i had no probs with it but cost about $2300 to replace crown and pinion all bearings and axles doing it myself(Brother is the mechanic)Was a great set up but expensive for the amount i used it.

Detroit in the rear $980 + install and TrueTrac in the front about the same.
Both auto lockers
