Hey guys got a few questions and answers(maybe) firstly the steering prob on my MK was play in the spline of the steering shaft between the two uni joints they are a collapable shaft and get play between them recon shaft was about 200$.The clunking leaf springs was one of the leafs hiting on the leaf retainers it was out of alinement tried everything but it stiff clunked its ass off in the end new leaf springs problem solved. My question is on morning starts my lifters(lash adjusters)make a bad rattle noise i had the right side replaced (600$) but still makes noise the mechenic that did the job says it must be something else maybe oil pick up? tried lighter oil no good so has enyone had this prob, and does enyone think that they should try to do something to fix this up as it cost me 600$ and the same prob is still there!

Mines always noisy. I was told it was the timing chain (not belt). Just on cold starts, after about two minutes I hear a "click" like a solonoid under the dash going off and I get a pickup in lights and power. Anyone else get this or am I dreaming? Sorry for the highjack.

Hi matt73,
Just had my MK's leaf springs greased up and new spacers put in fixed the problem same thing making a hell of a noise. Fixing the steering shaft is the next thing I need done as it doing the same thing rattling like you said $200 for a new shaft? did you just get your mech to do this or take it a steering place?
Just had the engine mounts replaced as they where split right through. $$$ labour costs to get this done was very big job! Need the rear mounts done too as I can feel the viberation right though the car as she gets over 3,000 rmp.
Sorry vineboy havn't any trouble with engin noise yet fingers crossed, mine has done 196,000k's
Need lpg asap
Cheers Dion

yeah my MK makes the ticking noise you describe i have been told it could be bearings in one of the pulleys, it could be lifters it could be this and that but pfft it goes away after 5 minutes so why start spending big $$$$ when its just in the morning

i have noticed though it is only when the weather is cold in summer it doesn't make any noise whatsoever

Thanks for the info havnt had problems with lights or power so far, tried doing spacers and grease but i think mine were to far gone ,steering shaft price was from steering shop. i went in and they had ordered wrong shaft but had already pulled mine out, the shaft pulls apart and because it had 2 go back in the splines went in a different postion and it seems 2 have taken up a far bit of slack may just need a pullapart and some grease the guy said they can be wacked with a hammer to tighten them up abit , also had to do engine mounts big $$$. The engine rattle does seem to be worst on cold mornings going to get rid of thin oil and think im going to try castrol magntec on the weekend to see if it helps

Vineboy have you ever replaced timing belt ?

My MK also makes a noise in the engine in the mornings, I'm just about due for my 200,000 major service so I hope the new timing chain ect makes a difference, If it doesn't I wont be spending $$$$ on trying to fix it.
When the engine warms up it goes away.
Cheers Dion
Need to get the tail shaft centre bearing replaced quoated from Mech $260 for the part went into Mitsubishi today and got a price $180, So I will be supplying this part for my Mech ha Ha.Rip off's
After I replaced the Eng Mounts (yes $$$ lots of labour costs for this) I can still feel the vibration though the car at 2800/+ This seems to be the problem so I'm getting it replaced.
Just got the gear box serviced and now I have 3/4th slipping/over reving under load?
Bloddy Auto's should have left it like it was as it didn't do this before!
