hi ky=vitara
i have a 1996 jlx estate 5 door auto wagon. in the owners manual it says 1500kg towing limit as long as the trailer has brakes!!
it differs for each of the 1996 models tho so...
for the 2 door soft/hard tops (manual and auto) the towing limit is 450kg braked!
for the 5 door's the limit is 1500kg braked.
i found this on redbook! its a good site ill give you the direct link to where the 1996 vitara's are Red Book AU : Your site for New and Used vehicle prices (http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/vehicles.php?make=SUZU&family=LCVITARA&year=19960)!
all the info i gave you is for the jlx 1.6 vitaras, its all on redbook. cant vouch for how accurate it is but i have towed 1200kg's in a jlx 5 door, u just have to plan ahead alot more!
just remember that ur maximum power is 71kw at 5600rpm and maximum torque is 133nm at 4000rpm so dont worry when you are towing and she is reving high, its what she wants;)
hope that helps mate and check out redbook!

thanks jacques see im only new to 4wding but how come the tow wight is so low and is there any thing that can be done to give it more pull?
i have the 2door soft top i also looked into the x-90 and that also has a 1300kg tow limit but from all i can get thay are the same, just dif bodys?
The lwb unbraked and the swb Vit's & X-90 unbraked and braked have a towing capacity of 450kg and the lwb braked has a towing capacity of 680kg(1500lb).

id listen to cj here mate, he has givin me plenty of advice thro here and always knows what he is on about. what i said is what i found in my owners manual and redbook. BUT THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE MEANS ALOT MORE THAN PRODUCERS NUMBERS!!
im only new to this whole thing myself.
when we were towing a trailer in my mates lwb vit it didnt feel good at all and i recomend keeping a good following distance between you and whoever is infront of you! keep your load to a minimum, and as i said plan ahead, slow down long before you have to turn and stay on or just below the recomended speed! (i know, i know its hard especialy in the vits;) )
in answer to the "more power" question, ive been looking around on here and from ARB and mechanics etc.... all agree on extractors and straight thro exhaust right off the bat, then bigger wheels and maybe a mod chip (im not sure on mod chips for the vits some of the mechanics say you can get them some say there is no such thing)
cheers mate
P.S. keep checking this post (and the other threads) you will no doubt find more info and the people on here are realy good folks and will try and help as much as possible

the new issue of 4wd monthly has a good article about buying used vits. it mainly focuses on the gv's and 2.0ltr ones but it does mention there that the 1.6 has a braked towing weight of 1200kg, seems ur right everyone has a different opinion. id say dont go to heavy, be sensible and see how she handles it;)
completly off topic but are you thinking of doing any mods to her?
cheers
If you look in the owners manual it will tell you that the swb has a max braked tow capacity of 450kg and this is also the same figure that is in the paperwork lodged with the Government for compliance. It is quite common to read incorrect data from other sources.
