just wondering what you blokes have done to your MK tritons.
So far ive done bugger all besides new rubber, uhf, spotties and mp3 player
Looking at getting spare wheel carrier put in as well as a canopy (misses wants it more than me) and a 130L fuel tank around xmas time.
Suspension will follow soon after that. But Ive been told I cant get more than a 40mm lift out of the suspension. let me know if you know otherwise.

Mate i have an 05 GLX-R and i recently got a suspension lift, and my mech said that you can only get 25mm out of the front as the stock torsion bars are sh*thouse and sag too much and just twist on themselves, so i reccommend that you get new torsion bars aswel as the EFS Elite shocks...and get around 1.5 - 2" in the back! I have also done a full stereo ranging from splits - sub...2 amps etc etc...Im also looking at getting 33" Goodyear MTR's what do you currently have???

hi guys, my gls has got so far:
- canopy
- alloy bull bar (needs to be replaced with a real one so I can fit the winch I have sitting in the garage)
- LPG underbody so it doesn't affect clearance
- 31" yokies
- UHF
- Roof racks
- sony CD MP3
- sony speakers all doors
- 10" sub in custom box behind rear seat
- 200w amp to power sub
- small colour camera & mic mounted on front of rear view mirror (to catch the action on the go)
- small 12v VCR to record the action mounted behind rear seat
- tow bar
- wound up standard torsion bars 50mm
I was wondering, is it possible to fit 33 inch tyres to an MK? and if so what mods need to be done?
I have seen them fitted to some pajeros, admittedly some were of the 33x10.5 variety but even that would do.
and would it better to use standard, nissan or toyota offset rims for the job?

yep defiantely possible even 35's if you want
my mate has a 02 MK with wound up original torsion bars about 2in and a 2in body lift and he is running 33's my other mate has a 01 MK he has wound up torsion bars and a 3in bodylift and he's running 35's
if i was going to 33's and/or 35's i would personally do a 2in suspension lift and a 2in body lift as it just gives you that little bit extra when flexing as both these guys rub a little under flex
but to answer your question yes it is very possible and cheap to do too!!

oh in addition to that they were running 33 x 12.5 and 35 x 12.5's

g,day dh-hows that towbar going mate, have you fitted her yet
still thinking about the torsion bar wind up.
Getting new suspension will give a 40mm list (1.5in), how much lift can I expect from winding up the bars?
corhijas
23-08-2007, 04:28 PM
you should be able to wind the bars the same 40mm,just remember the more you wind up the bigger the turning circle you will need as you lose some steering from what i was told-let me know if i am wrong
trity
23-08-2007, 04:57 PM
not sure about that but the more your wind them up the less downward travel you get out of the front suspension
just trying to work out if i can get a 2in total lift from suspension.

When I wound mine up I initially wound them up 55mm, but I didn't take it for a drive to check the real lift, which you're meant to do, and I wanted to keep a little forward rake for better handling, which the 55mm front lift did. But later that day I was looking at the car in the driveway and it looked as if I had zero rake and when I checked the heights they were the same and the total real lift I achieved was around 65mm, this was not as far as she could go by far, there was still enough room to the upper bump stops as well (I'm not really concerned about them as you can just cut them down or replace them with flat rubber) but now she sits like my mates '03 SR5, level front and rear, which I'm not really that keen on but as soon as I fit the steel front bar with winch she should pull down to the height I'm after.
Winding the torsion bars does not decrease your turning circle, while I had mine up on the hoist winding the torsion bars I also gave my ute a smaller turning circle by screwing down the steering stops.

thanks trity, that's the answer I was after, I'm not too keen on body lifts but if a 2" body lift can get the 33's under her I'll be all for it, do you know if they are using standard offset rims?

you can get bodylift kits off ebay, local suspension joints do them also - i prefer poly blocks some people prefer ally blocks its all personal preference i find the poly blocks don't squeak and have a little bit more flex
go to your local bolt / fixings place get longer high tensile bolts washers and nuts - by memory on the tritons the bolts go down from the top and you need to apply a nut (it isn't a captive nut like the 80 series cruisers)
you will need to chop the bottom of your radiator shroud to allow the radiator to move up with the body and not hit the fan
the gear stick after the lift may hit your centre console so a bit of cutting may be required
i believe the rims were a bigger offset for the 33 x 12.5, i know they were 15 x 8 CSA Magnum alloys but not sure on the offset - they look close to landcruiser offset to me

i'm only running 31's on my triton and thats how its staying
with 50mm lift you should fit them but if they are 33 x 12.5's they will scrub on the front under flex you will be safe with a 50mm (2in) body lift

i agree, i don't see the point of lifting the body to fit bigger tyres, there realyy isn't much difference. except for fuel economy and gear ratios. get a lokka and that will make up for any lack of flex

Yer i dont want to do a body lift, i just want to try and get the 33 under it! Im also trying to sell my nudge bar, tyres and mags so if anyone is interested in spares or anything let me know...

Hi Corhijas,
Yes mate fitted her the next weekend as you said very easy to do!
Thanks for that. I just had to purchase an extra long tounge as I got a rear chrome bar fitted and it need to be alot longer.
Just picked up my new canopy on the weekend, just black canvas one as I want to be able to remove it and only put it on when we go camping.
Had the weekend in halls gap and was hoping to get her shoes dirty but the weather was too good ha.
Very happy with my Triton so far just need to put her on gas although using prem unleaded was much better then normal unleaded fuel economy.
Cheers DH
Thanks again for helping me out with the tow bar purchase.

Just before i sold my MK triton I fitted Ironman foam cell shocks and it improved the handling both on and off road, they helped reduce body roll in the front suspension and off road loaded with camping gear it handled much better also no shocker fade like the thin useless factory shocks did, the foam cells seemed to help the torsion bars out!
I also fitted an Airtec snorkel (petrol/gas) as it was the only brand that made a snorkel for petrols. I also fitted a TJM steel wich bar and dual batts with a 12v socket in the rear.

I have a 00' MK GLS it is pretty much a stocker. just has a TV/DVD player, i have a navara sports bar but havent fitted it was im looking for 4 spotties to put across it. had 33's on it to see how it looked, was so tough but couldnt even get a half turn before they scrubbed! im probably just going to get a 31x12x15 muddie. what is the biggest tire i can fit WITHOUT a body lift or scrubbing?

I heard alot of you talking about cranking/winding up your torsion bars, i have recently had it done to mine, and the ride is -to say the least VERY SHITHOUSE. with much increase in bodyroll and general poor handling, so i bought some ironman h'duty torsions and snake racing greasable rear 2in lift shackles with full nolathane bushkit and new h'duty shockers i am hoping she will sort herself out. Been thinking about a body lift but it looks like too much stuffing around, and i'm just waiting for the lift to get some bigger rubber under her (and probably some black sunnies)- what is the best offset wider than std. ?UHF planned, dual battery on it's way, and a winchbar at some stage.
spoke to OL today, they quoted me on a tough dog suspension kit for my MK. They also said that my torsions bars have sagged, so it looks like ill be winding them up over the next few weeks.
This is what they priced me up on:
2 foam cell shocks for the front
2 gas shocks for the rear
2 prem leaf packs
Ublots and bushes
$1490
torsion bar kit is $600
and $300 to fit it.
They say that this will give me 40mm lift in the rear and 25mm in the front.
does this sound about right? Does anyone know if there another brand around that can do a lift kit of the same height all round?
just had a look on the net, found a rancho kit that does 40mm, with the bars wound up a bit 2" is looking good :thumb:

just a suggestion. to fit torsion bars to an mk triton would take about 30-40 min tops.
lift the front of the vehicle onto car stands ( ie put the stands under the vehicle, not the front swing arms as you want no weight on the wheels ).
undo the lock nut on the adjusting arm of the torsion bar.
undo adjusting bolt on the torsion bar.
remove the torsion bar by sliding it to the rear.
insert the new torsion bar, aligning the marks on the torsion bar with the marks on the bits the torsion bar slides into.
adjust the adjusting bolt.
repeat for the other side
bingo.
just saved $300 :)
oh yer, get a front end alignment done.
see here for pics and another explanation
Minutemod: Cranking the Torsion Bars (http://www.4x4wire.com/mitsubishi/tech/minutemods/torsion_bar/)
Torsion Bar Crank (http://www.monterosport.net/page7.html)
i though it was going to be difficult. the thought of it was harder than the actual doing of it.

My MK in the shed
http://www.4wdmonthly.com.au/shed/index.php?id=1421
put the stands under the vehicle, not the front swing arms as you want no weight on the wheels.
Just looked at winding the bars up. I had it jacked up on the front chasis rail (the bard that run in front of where the torsion bars connect at the front.) I turned each side 30 half turns, didnt seem to do a lot.
How many turns do they need to get a significient change?
Also, are the top bolt supposed to be turing as well cause mine are.
Is there somewhere else i should be jacking the up from and do i need to have both sides of the car up and the same time?
cheers
righto... Managed to get it turn with out the top nuts turning. Craked a shifter in the meantime. Am i supposed to turn em clockwise?
Anyhow, ive turned em both about 5 and a half turns. Didnt seem to lift it much. How many times do I need to turn em to see a real differance?
Front end seems to bounce a bit more as well.

the referenced articles on adjusting the torsion bars gives some idea of the number of turns to height adjustment.
measure from the top of the rim to the wheel arch before and after to see the change made.
and as you have mentioned the you need to undo the lock nut on the adjusting bolt and then the lower of the two nuts needs to be held with a spanner so it doesn't move while you adjust it.
cheers, got it figured out after work today, was turning the bolts the wrong way to start with. Its all good now, the cv joints and sitting straight, the front of the car is the same height as the back. Sitting a little higher to the top bump stop than the bottom. looks good though,
Misses said its need bigger tyres now :waycool:
Also, got a quote from ironman for a suspension kit, this is what they said.
we do a performance kit for $978 plus freight and fitting, giving you uprated torsion bars leaf springs urethene bushes and u bolts with 35mm bore long travel gas shocks providing around 35-40 lift in the front and 45-50mm in the rear, both from new ride height
does this sound ok?
Or i can get a rancho kit with the adjustable shock for ~$1900
which is better?
greybeard
26-02-2008, 11:45 PM
35-40mm on the front from standard would have to be pretty close to the limit of the bump stops.
ifs doesn't have a huge amount of travel to start with. it's inherent in the design of ifs.
if you raise the front to much from standard then you have to sacrifice some travel somewhere, it's either up or down that will be compromised. lifting to much will mean that you end up loosing down travel.
everything you do on a 4x4 means you gain somewhere and lose somewhere else. it's not a problem as long as you make informed decisions.
i can't help you on choice of suspension or cost. hopefully someone else can give you their experience.

bought the kit recently but in pieces from various retailers (ebay) but i am yet to fit it, got better rear shackles than the ironman ones though, and nolathane bushes let you know how i go once it is fitted (which should start next weekend) spent about 600 but got some good deals.

Made a heap of differance to the power!
3 hrs labour to fit the bloddy things
NGK double platinum Plugs and Top Gun leads great now with the 2.5" ex mod. My Triton has done 200k's and the plugs where struffed and 2 leads where way out.
