howdy prdners,

as the title says, what do you use to put your pegs in?

i use a claw hammer at the moment, bit rugged i know, but its all i got.
im lookin at getting something more user friendly. what do you use?

ive seen people using rubber mallets, but i can see them splitting after a while.
i thought of a small lump hammer, but i think that might be overkill, bending pegs and soforth.

so come on, fess up, what do you use????

cheers

Bwahahah:D classic!!

I use a claw hammer too, just buy good pegs and it'll take some pretty hard or rocky ground to bend them, also try and get the ones that are cut to a point cause they go in soooo much easier otherwise just get ya grinder out

Some sort of cheap chinese combo hammer thing I picked up in a camping store a few years ago - it goes into a tool roll with the tent pegs etc. The hammer has an axe head on the opposite side of the hammer and a jemmy bar doobrie on the end, very handy for levering out stubborn pegs.

my estwing claw hammer, don't have a problem hitting the pegs in at all with it. but then i am a carpenter and use it every day at work. the claw works great for pulling the pegs back out. i've tried using cheap hammers, but they're not balanced right, so my aim then becomes as good as your average weekend warrior.

Hey rumpig, I made the mistake of taking my estwing (great balanced hammer) last time we went on a extended stay. On the last day the dog decide that the handle would make a tasty treat  . What pissed me the most was that my so called mates sat back a watched while I was helping one of the guys with his boat.

Being a boilermaker, i have a collection of different sized ball pein hammers in my arsenal, but I always choose to take a simple claw hammer because they arent as bulky as ball pein or lump hammers. Claw hammers also good for pulling the pegs out in most circumstances. If ground too muddy or soft to rest claw hammer on while pulling out pegs, i simply use other pegs upside down to hook to the peg i want to pull out, and pull.

A gimpie or gimp for short is a slapper that you get to wack in your pegs for you (usually wears a leather must when going so):D

hey zordo, how do those rubber mallets go puttin pegs in? by that i mean is the force sufficiant, or do you have to hit harder,or more often? what they like on rocky or hard ground?

cheers mate

got to bring a teardrop to your eye when you see a + $50 hammer destroyed, good excuse to go to the tool shop for a replacement and maybe get a little something extra to help ease the pain of your lose.

I used to use the back of the axe but I've just bought a Coleman Wakjak.
Great for pulling pegs out as well.

I can't believe this thread is serious.

Hitting pegs in? A real topic for finding the right tool ey. Does it realy even matter how you bang them in?

Mallet, hammer, axe, rock, shovel, spoon, foot, hammer drill, crow bar, ...

Seriously, it is not something too lose sleep over.

It's not advertised as such but doesn't seem to bounce and I've used it in pretty hard ground.

Less effort than a claw hammer as the mallet is heavier.
Only cost $7.00 at a camping shop.

Normally a claw hammer as the claw comes in handy pulling out the pegs.

If I can’t find the hammer, I’ve used the spade, fishing rod holders, firewood or any rocks which happed to be in the area.

what i used to do when i went hiking was to use my foot, mind u i have a size 13 shoe so i can just rest the heal on the ground and lever the peg into the ground. failing this a rock is a good option. the best way to get a peg out of the ground is to use another peg, just use the straight bit as a handle and the bent end as a hook - as long as you pull the peg out at the same angle you shouldnt have any probs. best of all these ideas are free and they cannot be lost, stolen or eaten

Axe to hit em in, other pegs to get em out..

I store all my crap in a 3 x 1 x 1 tool bax... bit heavy, but its all there and quick to chuck in the back or in the trailer

Use a club hammer to get em in and a claw hammer with one of the claws cut off to get em out, gets under the peg easier with one claw

Heavy ball pein hammer I had lying around. Only use 25mm angle pegs, sand or dirt, so the extra weight comes in handy. All pegs cut to fit into one of those standard storage boxes you buy for $5. Put a wooden divider in – pegs on one side and ropes in the other. Only trouble is it is too heavy for the young bloke to carry.

Yeh i use one of those plastic crates too but with bits of conduit/PVC pipe screwed to the side to hold the pegs, and the middle is for the ropse and hammer. Yeh i know the feeling, even i have trouble lifting it into my ute on my own.

2 old work socks work a beaut for storing them
as said by the other bloke- harpoon gun... though i just mean a normal one, modify the couplings a bit to allow for the angled part of the peg to fit in, and make a case for it so it can't bust out the side...

i use a hammer and a chunck of old pine when you hit the pegs with the pine inbetween the peg and the hammer it will make a dent in the wood and that is how i stoped bending pegs or you could just buy 10mm pegs

also a mate of mine got some hardened steel angle drilled a hole in the top put one of thoes steel rings like your keyring on the hole and cabel tyes the tent to the post nothing short of a shorty will pull it out

I have a mallet and a tomohawk stashed away in my box of junk that always goes camping so I have never forgotten it so far, and when i go camping with friends you can be garenteed that at least one person will forget to bring something to put their pegs in with so they can borrow the tomo.
To pull them out i have a peg puller thing. It is about 50cm long and fits nicely in the pole bag so it is never something else i have to remember to pack it is always just there.

I now use a small lump hammer with a very large cup hook in the handle.
I use to have a rubber hammer but found that the camping spot that I was staying at the ground turned to concrete when dry. Destroyed my rubber hammer in no time. The cup hook is brilliant for removing stubborn pegs.

A side note: I had a series 3 land rover. There is a latch on the tail gate which is a ring and it's perfect for straightening those bent pegs. I miss it....

Chuck Norris doesn't use tent pegs - he just licks the bottom of the tent like a stamp and his super-saliva sticks it to the ground

The only thing that will remove this tent from the ground is a Chuck Norris Fly Kick
