BCF have a 9quarts camp oven on special at present.

Are these a big size (family ) or the smaller size.

The closest BCF is a little drive away,so if its a med-large I might go buy it .

2ndly ,whats the best way to season it.

Not all that big, how many in the family? I rekon you boil some good quality oil in it and clean and re-oil after each use. It will get better each cook...oh and when i say clean don't use to much soap!

We've got a *big* one. Don't ask me the size because I am hopless with that type of thing! ( I think it has something to do with me always being told that |-----| this is 6 inches!!!! )

Anyway, ours has been well loved... don't wash it in soapy water. When finished cooking, fill it with water & let it soak overnight (with lid on) by the fire & wipe out in the morning. Do what BJ73 said by heating some oil (peanut is good - it has a high burn point) & rub around with paper towel - let dry & repeat a couple of times before using.

Before you pack it away from the camp trip - rub it out with oil again to store.... they don't like being dry!

Probably perfect for you.. and yes like richsel said peanut is best, I do like to use a little soap though...especially if cooking white meats...germs will live in the oils and fats that can be hard to remove with just a wipe down.

I bought one of those oblong ones, i find them better for roasts (because roasts arent circular in shape!!). And yeh before i used it i burnt it in with some oil in, with the lid in. I stuff my little baby oven by lifting the lid off with the hot oil in it so close to fire. In an amazing 4th of july display, ive finnaly got the charcoal taste out of it. But yeh they get better the more you use them.

I condition cast iron by heating it up until it glows and then giving it as much oil as it wants to drink. For a camp oven, then put in a bit of oil or butter in the hot oven, put the lid on and let it sit. The absense of air gives a reducing atmosphere that blacks it really well.

make sure you buy a trivet (sorry no idea how you spell the word) for the camp oven aswell. they sit in the bottom like a cake rack and stop you burning the bottom of everything you cook, nothng worse then cooking something and burning the bottom of it cause you had to many coals under it.

I believe that using soap on a camp oven is a no-no. The soap actually removes the oils and unprotects the steel from rust. To keep it seasoned you should not ever use soap. Oil is a camp ovens best friend. A good quality oil is your best friend.

I read the instructions and it said to wash in "mild soap" to remove the wax coating.

I used the smallest amount os soap (like 10 drops) and some steel wool in hot water.I tried using a scotchbrite but the wax clogged it up.

I then heated it up till hot, poured in peanut oil (as suggested :D ) ,So hopefully its all good

if you have a gas burner then it won't hurt to bung it on and cook up some onion and bacon rind, just to help get rid of some of the crap in it. don't eat the stuff just chuck it out. thats what i usually do with my camp oven and new bbq plates.

Yes, season them first up with plenty of oil and get them nice and hot. We've got a couple of camp ovens we've been using for over 30 years on our camping trips to cook all manner of things and they've never ever been washed. After each meal I scrape them out thoroughly and then give them a really good going over with either rag or paper towel and plenty of olive oil. Between trips leave them with a liberal coating of good quality oil
