i have just been offered a non alloy diff with a 4.3 welded center, spare cv and front arms for $200.from a 1999 GV 5 door
first question
can this fit into a 1996 1.6ltr vitara 5 door estate wagon? and if so how difficult is it? and would i need a mod certificate for it?
cheers

Mate I can only assume the diff is from a V6 GV. Ratio's will be different.

yeah it is. my ratio is 5.1 i think? and the gv's is 4.3? can someone explain the difference to me?
The steel housing is what you want and you'll normally pay a bit more than that just for the housing. The rest of it is no good to you and you will need to swap your 5.125's in instead of the 4.3. The GV housing should be direct swap, the XL-7's are little different with the cross-member mount but can be adapted. There should be no need for any approvals.

welding the diff turns it in to some what of a LSD kind of, im getting mine done in the next month or so after a few bloke around here got theres welded and they had power to boath back wheels evein when one was off the ground i like!! if you want lockers that are propper the ARB airlockers are ment to be good!
Welding the diff locks it permanently. Doing this to front diff will have a massive effect on your steering. What most do is to then drive with one hub unlocked between obstacles and then lock it back in when needed. Doing this to the rear diff is a better option and fitting a proper locker to the front is not too bad but on a daily driven lwb Vit you will wear out your rear tyres fairly quickly. For a mild build I would just get a rear locker fitted and leave the front alone as the difference this will make to your capability is massive. The GV steel housing is a good thing though. If you don't want the housing PM me details as I could be interested in it.
