Had a situation on the weekend i'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.
Ended up running up the side of an culvert embankment and then slewing backwards half into a culvert itself which resulted in me coming to rest in more than 35" of slushy mud at about a 40deg angle. It was > 35" as my rear wheels were covered!
There was so much crap hard up against the rear diff that the handbrake had applied itself. This resulted in me getting no functional drive to the rear wheels, and therefore front wheels with the Trans lock applied.
We eventually had to winch out (hand :'() and then with the tyres deflated from 16 to 10front, 8rear was able to continue up the remainder of the hill.

Is there anything else I could have tried other than the winch to get out of this situation?

geez, if your going to make a habit of doing that id be buying an electric winch, the old hand winch is a last resort, did you try snatching it out.

sounds to me like you did the only thing you could do

did you try snatching it out.
Not an option, I had my mate in a hilux come up the left Rutt, opposite to the culvert and me, made it through by a foot ::)
The slope was too steep to stop on (risk losing momentum) let alone trying to snatch.

The thing I learnt was to try and hit the hump on the opposite side to the culvert. Switching rutts is not always an option however.

Oh and the video taken by the 11y.o. daughter of me hand winching a 2ton+ lancruiser on a 30deg muddy slope for 15min to gain 2 meters, has me clearly expressing my need to move up to an electric winch... The sad thing is that 5 minutes on the winch had she been there would have convinced her. :-\

maybe if you had a locker, you could have driven both front wheels & driven thru the handbrake application (mine does without a locker)

Maybe could have got under and dug it out a bit???? You would have gotten muddy though

maybe if you had a locker
Running Front and Rear Air Lockers.. Didn't help.

Maybe could have got under and dug it out a bit???? Was backed up against a tree unfortunatly so no access from behind the diff. And too muddy as you said. Did consider sending the 11yo underneath however ;D

were there no jeeps on hand to pull you out?? No, they were all still posing all clean and shiney at the Gembrook coffee shop, waiting for the rain to stop. ;)

shyt happens. i don't think you could do much else. at least you got it out and no one was injured which is the main thing. We don't buy 4b's to drive around shopping centres all day.

I Agree, nothing wrong with a "trip" becoming an "adventure".

If you had lockers and muddies the only suggestion is to fit bigger tyres
