I dis agree.

worst camping trip ever was at Mungo. We had like 5 goanna`s,3 black snakes (all going thru our tent and site at some stage)and 2 crazy pussoms that thought dropping onto the tent at 03:00 was a good idea . Put that ontop of the worst bunch of campers next to us , we wont be going back again any time soon.

I`ll stick to camping on propertys or the dunes at Stocko

yeah the animals can be a PITA - last time I congratulated myself by thinking to lock all the food away inside the ute canopy before going to bed to keep the possums out of it.

I was awoken at 3am by a farking DINGO that had dragged off my esky FILLED with beer, fish and meat from alongside my tent and was trying to get the lid off 50m away from the campsite  that damn esky weighed a tonne, but I had underestimated the determination of the dingo :o

We have camped at Fraser Island 5 or 6 times now and have never had any drama with the wildlife there....... because we lock the food, the fridge, the esky and the rubbish in the truck! Very Simple!! Dingo's have visited sites adjacent ours on several occassions but not bothered with our site.
Try it..... it works!!

At the present time my favourite spot is Flinders' Beach on North Straddie - probably because I practically grew up on Straddie and miss it dearly when I'm not there (haven't ever stayed at Flinders' until recently). Second to this would be Murray Sunset National Park in Victoria - only been there once, but am itching to head back!

Mines up around Big River, some good fishing, great tracks and scenery, although I would like to travel around a bit more and see some more of the country.

I reckon anywhere that you can see the stars on a clear night around a camp fire with a few cold cans is a good spot to camp.

I've never had a problem with the wildlife at mungo. Seen it around the camp sites but it has never bothered us.

In fact, I think it adds to the place. Nothing better than sitting down enjoying a beer while a goanna and dingo walks past.

If you ensure your food etc is packed away in your vehicle you should have no problems.

In relation to the other campers, this can happen anywhere.

We often camp at Banksia Green which is just behind the sand dunes on the other side of the road near Mungo Brush. It's a smaller camp area - pit toilets are much cleaner/less smelly. You can still have fires here too where you can't at Mungo. It used to have direct acess to the beach, but it's now closed (Bloody greenies!).

Kylies Beach/Diamond Head (off the highway at Moorland - north of Taree) is also a fav. No dingo's but plently of kangaroo's to raid your campsite.

I think if you *think* wildlife is going to be an issue - be smart - lock esky's; don't throw foodscraps in the bush near camp; don't leave the fruit bowl on the table etc etc.. like Stew - we've never had a problem. There used to be HEAPS of dingos at Mungo 20 years ago - nobody went their either, it was a dirt road from Tea Gardens & it took nearly an hour....

Lots of good places around... their even better if you can sneak a weekend a way every month or two!

Yeh they're coming hard to find now. My fav place used to be 5 Rocks. It was fantastic before NPWS came in. It was actually a challenge to get back off the beach. You had to wait until low tide so you had a run up. So no one went there. I remember having the whole beach to myself for entire weekends. These days, i tow a 4 metre tinny up on a trailer no worries and you see forrestors and CRV's up there.
And the fishing was obviously better back then too.

But lately its been corio bay (southern side of 5 Rocks/9Mile Beach). Some good 4wding and a great tinny and fishing spot.

By the bush camp do you mean by the railway bridge or further up there is one section that has been locked up by the water board which was where we use to camp. we now gain access through a friends uncle who leases his cattle on the land accross the little creek but we generally camp in that area

Apparently there has been an actual camp site up, accessed off the calliope monto road. Its on the map for the area. But the railway bridge eh? I have ways of accessing those areas.

But i was just wondering if there is a boat ramp at the bush camp i was referring too, but obviously you dont know much about it either.

Beside the railway there used to be a road down beside it and when they rose the dam it went under we have launched there before but it is starting to get a bit shallow and to muddy to launch a boat there now that the water has dropped a fair bit, you could also try launching from the main awoonga dam ramp and cut straight across the dam and follow the river it will take you to the same spot but agin can get shallow in some spots

yeh the water is getting close to the end of the ramp, last time i was there i seen a few trailers in the deep. And its also very long, takes a steady hand to get it down in one go.

Hey walt i remember in a previous post you were asking about 5 rocks beach i think its 3 rivers what was the out come of that and do you know whats happened with 5rocks now havent been up there for years and was thinking about going up there some day in the near future

They held another meeting this week and the update was in this mornings morning bulletin. Apparently, the council want to keep it open, but NPWS dont, but the council cant open it again until NPWS get there act together and they are taking there time. Now they are looking into the damage done by the army as well.

And as for 5 rocks, it closed off to cars now, has been for a few years. A campground is now built with showers and toilets up near stockyard township, about 500m walk to the beach.

9 mile has been changed alot in the past 18 mnths or so, they are currently couriroying the entire nothern access, cost $4.50 a night to camp on a beach with not facilities, cant camp north of the creek or south from about half way down. And most of the tracks have been closed off.

So as you canguess, every man and his dog are up there now.

Just an amusing story about the battle between park ranger and the hoons. When they started charging people to camp they built one of those self registration booth, made from wood. Well someone flicked a match in it. They built a new one out of steel, someone pushed it over with their bull bar, then burnt it. The new one is completely steel, cemented into the ground.
