Who has a tent cot, and what do you think of them?
Is there plenty of room for a swag, or do you need to cart extra bedding. I was thinking of buying one for those quick trips up the bay where the sand flies are bad (its called sand fly creek for a reason) when i dont want to set up a tent.

why not just take a swag and some aeroguard?

trust me, you got no idea how bad the sand flies are at corio bay/sandfly creek, that is unless you DO know. Ive had many sleepless nights, and yes even with rid on, it only lasts a few hours anyway, and it doesnt stop them buzzing around you,. only on you.

I've already got a well setup trailor for family camping but i'm probably going to buy one for trips up the beach with the boys. I reckon they're a good idea because i hate sleeping on the ground and hate 'open air' camping at the beach due to march flies, sand flies etc. They seem quite compact, which is a must for the wrangler's lack of space. My only concern is that the fly is an accessory and this makes me think that it's not very waterproof.

My setup is similar to a tent cot. An Oztrail Mitchell swag on a Great Outdoors Goliath stretcher. Very comfortable and warm in winter.

Make sure you buy the original tent cot and not a cheap copy from ebay. These are great units, basically a swag mounted on a stretcher and work very well indeed. Go for the king single, plenty of room to stretch out in and also enough room to get changed as well, if buying second hand make sure the flyover is with it, does the job in all the heaviest downpours.....Downside is they are rather big and bulky and will take up a fair chunk of your storage space, easy to assemble and less than 5 minutes your snug as a bug in a rug.....

I have rigged up a stretcher bed for my swag, although i don't use it much anymore.Basically bought a large single stretcher bed, welded in some hooks for the loops to hook into, and away I went. Not as good as the real thing, but did the job.I did find it to big though,as I like to travel light,so I put the swag on the ground these days.

Walt,

have you thought of a Hennessy Hammock?
If you can find 2 trees or car roof racks to tie it too, it's really good.
It"ll hold 130KG plus and the croc's wont get ya (if it's high enough:D ).
They're water and bug proof as well.Very comfortable, and dont take up much room.I think they're about $250 or so, from memory.

We went to the cape with a lady who used one... I don't know if it was a genuine but i know in rain she needed a fly or she got wet so most overcast nights she slept under our awning to save the fly.... She used normal bedding inside.. I think a swag inside would be unnecessary and cramped

Richard Thats a nice setup with the swag and awning ...is that a HOUSE in the back left corner of your photo????

yep, I have a mate who has one and loves it. Perfect for teh Wrangler too jeeps.

Again though as others have mentioned, the fly doesn't seem to be much chop, and condensation sometimes gets through, but he has used it heaps with no complaints. Not as quick as a swag, but is off the ground.

Doubt you would get a swag in there, but simple bedding required.

Gday Walt i used one last saturday at shepparton fantastic, had a self inflating mattress and sleeping bag, the only fault i found was condentsation on the roof should have opened the end flaps for airflow,
checkout tentcot.com/1.htm they have a range of sizes.
also camping-r-us.com.au . hope this is of some help

If it's cold weather, you don't want a thin canvas layer with a draft underneath your bed. We did Tantawanglo a couple of winters back and a friend was sleeping on a canvas cot in his tent and we were a lot wamer on our self inflating foam.

They look OK for situations where it's warmer though.

Yeh the cold isnt really an issue for me, where i intend on using one it gets very tropical, basically its mangrove territory. Oh and as you mightve guessed, i still havent bought one, its on my to get list though.

I got one coz the old bones don't handle getting up off the ground too well any more. Got the double size, coz the missus hates swags. Great nights sleep. We had no problems with rain or condensation. just make sure you lock the legs in.
Only downer is it's size and weight. Needs to go on the roof rack!
On my own, I'd prefer a stretcher and swag!! sorry luv!

Hi Walt
I have tent cots for the whole family. I didn't buy the original as they are quite expensive. I bought the Kookaburra brand from Ranger Camping. I have no regrets at all. They are quick to set up. Roomy, I'm just over 6' and have enough room to really stretch out. They have a really supportive base, so I never wake up with a stiff back. My brother in-law bought them as well after seeing ours. He put a thin mattress into his (about 40mm) and it will still fold up without removing the mattress. It makes camping heaps easier. The ones I have have never leaked and come with a good bag to put them into, which is great as I through them on the roof when traveling, so they stay fairly clean as well.

Tent cots seem to get a lot of moisture in them, from the sleeper, not weather. everythin in the morning is damp, we found you had to have the little windows open for ventilation to stop this.
