View Full Version : More MK triton Noises! Steering column

My Mk has developed a rattle in the steering colum.
When traveling over small bumps I get this resonating rattle up through the steering wheel.
I've taken all the lastic shrouds off to see if that was the problem.
I've taken the steering wheel off to see if there was a worn bush inside the tube that the steering colum runs through.
There is a bearing in there instead of a bush and it's in perfect condition with no play between the steering shaft and the bearing.
Had the mechanic today adjust the steering box, grease the tie-rod ends and ball joints and tighten all the suspension mounts.
If I 'twist' the steering wheel Ie, pull towards me with one hand and push towards the dash with the other the noise disappears.
Has anyone ever had this sort of noise before?
Any ideas as to what it could be?
It's bugging the crap out of me.
I'm almost ready to go to the wreckers and replace the colum/shaft, steering box/pitman arm and idler arm. One at a time till the noise is gone.
Cheers
Mark

have you checked the rubber mount where the column joins with the steering assembly

have you checked the rubber mount where the column joins with the steering assembly
Is that where the colum comes out of the firewall?
The colum has about 3 joins just in the engine bay. 1 is a universal joint that is under a rubber boot. I think there has to be another one inside the car for the colum tilt but I'm not too sure.

Just come back inside after having another play with it.
(On the engine bay side of the firewall moving towards the steering box)
At ther firewall there is a universal joint inside a rubber boot. this seems fine.
Moving down the column there is a splined slip join wher the column steps down in diameter. The female end is attached to the uni joint.
The next piece has the male part of the steering shaft with another step down.(and then another uni joint and then a clamp that joins to the spline on the steering box.) This looks like an extension piece that Mitsubishi has used to extend the column for the front mounted steering box as opposed to the rear mounted one on the 2wd version.
This slip joint (like a tailshaft in a gearbox) feels loose on the splines and when I move it up and down I can feel a fair amount of free play. I think this is where my vibration is comming from.
I plan to pull it apart and give it a good clean and then a grease. I also think that if I can slide it back 5mm or so off the steering box spline then It might help with a tighter fit.
Before I go to all this trouble I'd like to know if this free play is normal.
Might have to drive past some car yards and see if they have any MK's in there to check it out.

Mate I found you question on the MK Steering rack and I must say mine is doing the same thing and its giving me the ^$^$ too!
Let me know if you have found a way to fix this as I have booked it the mech to get them to fix it and they will take ages and $$$$.
also geting the rear leaf springs fitted with new lugs as mine is making a hell of a noise as well as per the other guy on this forum posted.
any help would be great.
Cheers Dion

Will do Mate.
I was going to have a crack at it soon but we're pretty busy packing for the move into our new house. (tomorrow) I've had to pull the garage apart and put an XY Gt that is undergoing restoration back together for the move.
I think some time next weekend I'll have a real good go at the column and I'll let you know.

Mine is pretty stock. I've wound the front torsion bars up but only about 20mm higher than stock. They'd sagged about 25mm so really needed it.
It's got custom lantana pin striping, a couple of panel depressions and a rock modified bash plate. Oh yeh.... rhino roof racks.
Was thinking of taking about 5 thou off the dipstick and putting in a straight through glove box but the mrs said NO modifications. I can't even adjust the torque on the momentum screw.
One day I'll be able (allowed) to make some real mods but I might wait till I get an ML. Sometime after the next blue moon.
Cheers

Hi Mark / Dion. From memory, the 'cure' for the rattle you're talking about is replacement steering column. Has something to do with a bearing within the system...............??? Only usually shows up on vehicles that have done a few kms............and is also a problem in Challengers.
Re turning circle - adjust the steering stops on it, for a big differance. Here in NZ, that was done as part of the pre-delivery check on that model Triton. Does'nt lead to any long-term detrimental affects on yr ute, but makes parking & bush-work a lot easier........

gas works a treat i have a 55lt tank under the rear where the spare wheel is and luckily the tow bar goes a smidgent lower also comes with its own bash plate
i get about 400kms out of 55lt of gas and about 450 - 500 out of petrol, my car needs a new clutch with i am just waiting for but other than that she travels sweet hey, i've done a custom dual battery setup and a custom centre console since mines a GLX it didn't come with one i made it out of MDF and a EL Falcon console lid fits nice and snug between the front seats

Thanks Dave, i found this recall the other day. rang Mitsubishi today and they said there is no recall for my MK on system or it has been done!
They said inquier with the dealership and see if its a fault they can fix as a warrenty claim.
My numbers do fit within their recall VIN's as well so if someone has already fixed it they didn't do a very good job!
And now I would have to replace the steering shaft ect.
i will be just putting up with the rattle if thats the case.
Cheers Dion

Thanks Trity,
I was thinking about putting the gas tank in the back of the ute, But it will take up a lot of room. Not good as there is not that much as it is now.
So they put your tank where the spare goes? a round one same a the spare! I like that idea very much.
Did you get direct injection gas or is it a carbie style one??
Thanks Dion:)

nah it is a normal cylindrical type of a tank not sure if they can put a round one under there as it needs to be a certain space away from the exahust and with a 2.5in going through i was lucky to fit a 55lt

I might just stick too putting one in the back of the ute.
Then I can go for a 70/80 one.
Thanks Dion

Hi Dion - if you are going to your mechanic for steering stop adjustments, sounds like you need to get him to adjust the ride-height of the front suspension at the same time. Fairly simple to adjust the torsion bars on the Tritions, to get back up sitting where they should be. :) Are a good unit, & very much under-rated by most people.

I just had the Triton into the Mech's and they removed the steering stops and then said after the test that it made no differance? When you said adjust the steering stops did you mean remove them or is there some way to adjust them?
Little more help please! I would realy like to be able to park in normal car spaces and turn the truck around on a HWY ect.
Thanks Heaps
