Well last weekend i went playing with the other forum members in the watagans only to last an hour on the track before i heard a rather horrible bang from the front! Followed by no 4wd and then lock up! Basically the pics speak for themselves. Somehow the Diff centre just exploded. Yes ok, i was pushing the truck but not flogging it, I would have thought the diff would have been stronger!! :( Anyone heard of this happening to other R9's?
Its all fixed now and my bank account is $860 lighter, expensive lesson!:)

BUGGER looks nasty , mustve been a bit of pressure on spider gear to do that or fault/fatigue in metal

must have been a fault with the metal in the spider.... probably couldn't have steered clear of that one.
Would have happened sooner or later regardless

Didn't land on the front wheels with ya foot on the go pedal did ya?
1st. time I've heard of a Deo front diff detonating. They are a Dana Spicer unit, sposed to be pretty tough

Maybe Sudso :(
I was climbing a rutted hill with a smallish rock step (1-2ft) 1st gear low range about 2500-3000rpm and got a little bouncy then bang! I would have thought the CV would bust first!:(
I was also thinking a fault in the gear, but i guess you''ll just never know...

AndrewDid the diff housing itself hit any rock? That might have been enough to shock it into shattering inside coupled with the wheels landing under load.

Diff didn't hit anything as far as i know. So im not to sure...
This pic was taken just seconds before it went bang. You can see the little step just in front of the wheels.

That hurt........
Would have been the perfect time to fit a lokka, the spiders have to come out to fit it in, and you had it in pieces anyway.
Probably the best mod a deo can get IMO
So what did you get for your $$$$ new crown and pinion or a complete 2nd hand diff?

I did look into getting a Lokka fitted to the front while it was apart, but i just couldn't really afford/justify spending another $800 on top of the repair bill:( Would have loved to fit one though...
Yep complete diff centre was installed, second hand ofcourse.

i was one off the 4wd on this trip and as stated it wasn't that big a rock and the car didn't hit the rock would of thought the cv would've broken first, anyway still .
why so much for a lokka locker let me know what you were priced may be can get them cheaper!!!!!
cheers

Thanks Hamish for your help with trying to sort out the problem track side, not to mention learning a few things about CV's in the process, it was very much appreciated :)
Was quoted $699+fitting for the Lokka.

$499 is the quoted price for hilux and patrol.
In keeping true with the isuzu priceing hoodoo the lokka for rodeo is............$599.
Fitted and setup correctly( both required clearences within the spec) they are quiet and effective and apart from slightly heavier steering when fitted to the front you dont notice theyre there until youve cocked a front wheel in the air and keep moveing.
