Hello all
Looking at gettin a 60 series sahara with a 12ht turbo diesal motor in it. It has 320,000 klm's on it but runs clean except up hills blows a little smoke under load. How many klm's do these motors do before rebuild is needed. Any advise from people with these or has had these is appreciated.
Thanks :thumb:

Unfortunately this is a bit like "how long is a pice of string"! 320,000 is definately not high for a diesel engine. The smoking up hills, well diesels will all do that.
If the engine has not been thrashed, had a good service history etc than you may not have to rebuild it for donkeys years. Unfortunately, with anything mechanical, things can and do go wrong. Even a brand new engine may have a fault causing it to fail.
There are many other factors with the engine too, did the previious owner clock up the k's on the highway, or lots of stop-start going to the shop. was the engine allowed to run at idle for a short period after driving to allow the turbo to cool etc.
If the motor sounds good, doesn't blow heaps of smoke etc, then it sounds like you have no reason to rebuild it. If in doubt, take it to a mechanic or diesel specialist for a second opinion.
Cheers,
Adam

Yes a lot of the klm's are freeway klm's so I feel I should not have any probs. I was just wondering how many klm's others out there have gotten out of theirs.;)

One of our clubbies got one for a weekend play toy about 2 years ago from a guy who said he used to maintain it every 7,500kms [that's a bit different hey ! ?] anyway they got 470,000 out of it , it died the other week , i know of a property owner at Bourke where i go hunting & he got to 600,000 about half a year ago with only normal issues so far !

I got over 530000km's out of mine and I overheated it so much at one time (around the 420000km mark) that I couldn't turn it over with the starter motor until it cooled down, then I had to drive it home another 20k's with it in the red on the temp guage! The only thing that I ever had to do to the engine was replace the water pump at about the 520000k mark.
It would blow a LITTLE bit of blue smoke first thing until it warmed up.
BTW as far as I know it is still going strong.

They sound good. Good klm's out of any motor I recon. If any motor gets to 500,000 its doing well.

My 12/88 60 series has a 12HT with 480000k's on it,I got her with 380000k's from a bloke that towed horse floats alot. She works as well as the day it was screwed together.Still has her original head, turbo and internals. She gets serviced every 10K (which is more than enough for any diesel).Slight puff of smoke (blueish - oil) but that's gone by the time i've shifted into 3rd gear.
In my opinion it's one of the best motors Toyota has ever produced.A few little mods to the intake/turbo and exhaust and they improve quite well for little out lay.
Cheers Andy
(If she Dies,it's 6.5L V8 CHEV TURBO DIESEL TIME!!!) a man shouldn't be without a V8 for to long.
when it starts making horrible scratching ticking rattling noises or you hear a big bang you will know your nearly all out of kms

honestly the post saying how long is a piece of string has the most info.
A well maintained and nicely driven 2h will do a comfortable 450-500k, the 12ht isnt much different but where talking about a 20+year old motor that has maybe been thru 4 owners and who knows what service history or driver stupidity it has suffered! so who really knows. judge the motor on its symptoms and condition, rattle smoke compressions ect
