Mate came around today asking my opinion on the 2.8TD Patrol.
What are your thoughts, is there anything to look out for with the motors?
Any opinions/comments would be appreciated. He is looking to buy one at the moment with some touring accessories.
Throw away with the comments, will be jumping on tonight at his place and checking the replies over a few beers and doing some research.
Cheers in advance.

Hi mate, I had a 1998 GU Patrol with the intercooled 2.8. The only issue I found was it lacked off idle torque but I've heard the aftermarket chip/computer modules can help a lot in that area. I used to average about 11-12 litres/100klms around town driving calmly. Great when you get to 2000 revs and they rev out to 5000 pretty easy. I'd get another one.

i believe that they dont run all of the same running gear and drive train as the 3l and the 4.2
i read in a 4wd monthly somewhere that they are no where near as strong as the 3l and the 4.2 drive train

I own one and couldn't be happer:D . Horses for courses, those that have never driven one usually say to save your money and buy the 4.2. They do lack some low down grunt but a chip (apparently) and some other easy mods can go along way to fixing this. What is he looking to do with it?????

Thanks for the replies fellas, he is going to be doing the Canning Stock Route with us next year (12 months and counting!!!!). A lot of sand but tyre pressures will fix nearly all problems there. Sounds good so far.
The drive train may not be as strong as the 4.2 but you wouldn't think it would need to be if the motor is no where as big.
Cheers again.....keep the thoughts comin.

Gday Crawla,
Mate I own one and it has been fantastic. As stuartd said, horses for courses. Obviously if you intended to pull a horse float all day and everyday maybe not the greatest idea. I use mine as a daily driver as well as 4x4 trips and camping trips and have never had a problem. Put a larger exhaust, chip if its a gu, and you'll be supirsed how well these machines can go!!
I say go for it, you can get them at the right price, use the right amount of diesel and are pretty well bomb proof!!

yeah i have one as well i'm happy with it , it gets a flogging on and off road.
we are travelling up to the NT late sept early oct , havent planned the route up or back yet the only definates are timber creek to the stuart highway via Bullita Stock Route , Humbert River Track and VRD.
i reckon it'll be a blast and i'm not at all concerned about it being a 2.8
