gudday peoples,

we currently use stretchers and sleeping bags when out camping, but me and the missus are finding the stretchers a tad small and uncomfortable. we have been thinking of self inflating mattresses.
does anyone know if a mattress exists that doesnt throw one person out when the other gets in to bed???
we need something thats comfy, easy to inflate (self inflatable is good) and packs relatively compact, or as compact as a mattress can be.

thanks in advance for ya help,

cheers

Why not just get yourself a double swag, you can roll up all your bedding in it, and you can both be cosy and sleep on a foam mattress.

Try one of the coleman Mattreses.

They can be a bit hard to pack down small but they are great and more or less bomb proof.

They have a foam inner, that then inflates so even if you put a rip in it it will not totally go down.

We use ours inside our roof top tent and its excellent, and even when we sleep in the tent it really keeps the cold off you because its not a full air bed so you are not sleeping on cold air all night.

Me and my missus use a "DMH Offroad Mat" its a self inflating mattress and it cost $130 for a double size one and we will have been sleeping on it for a year on the 23rd of july!!! its bloody great and packs away quite small. I HATE inflatable mattress' they're so crap. and this was the only solution for me travelling around oz for 18months

paul and charlie, a self inflator does sound the go. its what i was originaly thinking of, just wanted some thoughts of people who have used them.
i hadnt thought of a swag, but it could be an option too...

I think a good quality double swag starts at around 300 up to 500. Personally though, paying anymore than 300-350, you are paying to much. Good luck with your choice. As for buying, allmost every camping/disposal store sell them or can get them for you, or "Google" is your friend as well as "Ebay".

I have one of the coleman self inflatable mattresses. We love it, very comfortable and if you want it a bit harder just add some more air. Since your in the northern rivers you could pick one up from Boots camping store, thats where I got mine.

Cheers, Troy.

Self inflatable matress is what me and my missus are looking at also.

Im 6`1 so am looking at the queen size. Remember to take that into account when you purchase one of these, that they do go bigger than double :D

we have a queen size self inflating matress and it's great to sleep on, have used it at fraser and took it to the caoe with us, so it was our bed basically for 5 weeks straight. the only problem with ours is it's size once rolled up, if you can fit it on a roof rack then you'll be right. we used to sleep on a foam matress but this beats them hands down.

We've got an extra long queen size self inflatable. I'm 6'5" and have no dramas. easy to adjust comfort level by letting air out.

Cost about $400 a few yeas ago, but hey, you spend 8 hours on it. You might spend that amount of time in your car on a long day and you pay $20-40,000 for that!

I got a cover made for it that fits neatly over it that makes it that bit comfier. And the cover is black for those long bush trips.......

As Rumpig said you need to be aware about how big the coleman can be...Ours lives on the ARB roof rack when we are touring as it too big to go inside...Worth it though as it a great thing to sleep on..

You can buy patterned material by the metre for doona covers. I just got some that felt comfy and was hard wearing. A mate of mine, named Jason funnily, is a wiz with the Singer. It fits snug over the matress and buttons at the top so it doesn't move.

I've got the same thing on my single matress that my mum knocked up. She got material from the Sheridan outlet. I got some pillowcases and a drawstring bag for the bed that match.

You've just got to remember to cut the corners at an angle to allow the valves to stick out.

We got ourselves a queen sized self inflatable mattress(can't remember the brand) about 12 months ago, as the foam mattress in our camper was knackered, plus it was a real pita to fold away the canvas properly(we have a hard floor camper). Now with the self inflatable the canvas goes away easily as we undo the bungs and the air is expelled out of the mattress as the camper is folded over. I was really sus at first especially about the comfort level, but after a number of small trips and a 3 week trip last xmas, I can say that they are great. Really comfy and best of all the missus loves it. Now we have a single one for our daughters stretcher. The single one rolls up reasonably small(not as small as some sleeping bags though). The queen size one we leave in the camper permanently.

Hope this helps

I would suggest a Thermarest, I have had mine for 8years, they are more for hiking, but I have always slept well on it. Its fully insulated and did me when I was camping back in the UK, Scotland and Wales in the winter snow....albeit it in a hut or tent! It even kept me warm (along with a good sleeping bag) when I was staying in a friends converted basement on the concrete floor in Canada during the winter.

That said I bought my first swag last night, so looking forward to giving that a go in the next few weeks  :D

we've used thermarests for a while because they roll up small, good for packing in kayaks, then last year we bought a queen size self inflating for the Turbo Tent, luxury mate, wouldn't use anything else.

Go for the self inflating mattress you wont look back.

Self inflating for sure!!

I actually got 2 king size single mattresses for my missus and I. Easier to pack up, don't have the one big mattress to roll and pack and if I want to go away by myself with the boys I don't have to lug such a big one around.

Works for me....Daniel

Does anyone use a Spinifex 4WD Mat from Anaconda. Queen size ones are reduced from $199 to $109. If there is good feedback I will grab one?

Very good matresses. I tend to toss and turn a lot when i sleep, and the one i bought has stood up to it. Well worth buying.

Why not just get yourself a double swag, you can roll up all your bedding in it, and you can both be cosy and sleep on a foam mattress.

We use a double swag too. It is great even though it is a bit bulky, but for the comfort and warmth it gives us, we gladly make room for it! Self inflating mattresses or even air mattresses can be prone to punctures, and then you have to make the bed every time you set up camp. A swag only needs to be unrolled and ta-da, a made bed!

I've been using the 'Off-Road Matress' from Snowy's Outdoors in the double swag for when the missus is along and the same self inflating version in the single size for the single swag for when she stays at home! The foam mattresses were good, the Self-Inflators are BETTER! And they are fully insulative so you don't need to worry too much about rugs etc underneath! Can't recommend them highly enough, and after years of swags to moove to a self inflator and find it is so much better is saying summat!

Put a Self inflating mattress in the swag and you'll get the benefits of both. They do pack down reasonably small, considering that they contain ALL your bedding in one package that is secure, sealed, and robust enough to throw on the roof rack. You only really need to think about a tarp over the top if it's gonna bucket down for hours (or you're driving too fast & driving the rain straight thru the swag canvas!)

Enjoy!
