View Full Version : 3ltr low power

Hey all you experts. Been away for the weekend in our 3ltr turbo diesel and coming home noticed a distinct lack of power. Runs smooth but feels like turbo lacking power as does not have the regular power over 2500 revs. Disconecting the pipe into the intercooler and seeing what pressure is coming out of the turbo seems to be good boost. I am going to try and get a boost gauge today to check it properly.
Anyone got any other ideas????

best guess would be air flow sensor, have done a few of these and a lot of the time they won't throw up a fault code, the sensor can be bought seperately from the housing it resides in,making it a bit cheaper.(something a lot of dealers won't tell you).

Either that deano, or it could be a restriction in the fuel flow! Have you replaced your filters lately, heathanderson? Could it be that you have a reduction in fuel availability that's restricting its revs to below that 2500 rpm?? When did your last filter change occur? Could you have recently purchased a load of poor quality fuel, or even a water/fuel mix? Does your fuel look like good, clean diesel?
Basically, check all the easy things first: making sure that you've got fuel in an appropriate qty & quality; that you've got clean air without restrictions; that your compression is capable of letting your engine run properly; and that the pump is providing the fuel to the right injector at the right moment!
Only after you've resolved all these should you really start looking for dirty map sensors and air flow meters etc.
Enjoy

Go to Autobarn, Dick Smiths or similar and get a can of electrical cantact cleaner.
Remove the MAF spray it with contact cleaner let sit for 1hr and put back in.
Fixed mine!!
BUT if MAF has a heap of km's on it better to replace it. My MAF only have 12,000km's on it so cleaned it and all good.

All right I give up. Where is the MAF located? I've got the Gregorys manual out but can't see it.
Since returning I have filled up with fuel, and replaced the air and fuel filters as these were due anyway but they all looked pretty clean. We did go through a bit of water. Not deep, but enough to get everything in the engine bay wet.

go to your air filter and follow the intake, the first connector you come to is your air flow sensor, very common for these to play up and cause a noticable lack of power, usually caused by filter put in upside down or cheapy non genuine filter installed

got the same sorta problem with my 2.8 intercooled,as well as a starting issue. cleaned the sensor, tryed a second handy($150) and tried a new one ($1100) didnt change a thing, so the old one went bank in and the others went back

Go to page 147!!
See Air cleaner Components diagram (right side of page).

$1100 for an air flow sensor, shoulda been less than $200 genuine

I don't know how you assessed the boost with the hose removed???
I'd be checking for escaping boost, via leaking intercooler or split hose. But fitting a gauge will allow you to monitor that, except you have no baseline at the moment.

Thanks for your help guys (specially Deano). Turned out dust had got through the top of the air filter (the rubber at the top had come loose) and got dust in the MAF sensor. A bit of carby cleaner flushed through it and works like a new one.

I`ll be keeping this one in the back of my mind. Easy fix for a pain in the arse problem to find!

Gee, carby cleaner is a bit aggressive. Use the contact cleaner.
