Can roof lights be used on-road, or are they off-road only?
I suspect they have to be wired into the high beam circuit like bull-bar mounted lights?
yes they have to be wired into the high-beam circuit, and also i think if they are above the roof, they have to be covered when on-road.

In Vic all non essential lights (anything other than factory) must not show red to the front or white to the rear. This is the only requirement. All height restrictions etc that used to be in force no longer apply.

They are illegal to use on any public gazzetted road or track, even a beach if it's for public driving (like whose gonna care on a beach anyway) if they are pointing forward, even on an angle.

I was always told the reason they're not supposed to be used on road is because they're in oncoming drivers eyes over crests and rises well before you see the other vehicle, unfortunately thats also the most effective place to have your lights.
While i've never seen any documentation that says in black and white terms what is, or isn't legal, i've always played on the safe side, mine are on an independant circuit, they only require the ignition to be turned on.
