4x4 engaged lights flashing ('93 NH Pajero)

i have nh pajero 93 i first heard a large winding noise in the front so i slowed down to stop as i did the sound became like a grind & the 4x4 dash lights flashed. the sound comes & goes & the lights flash again. but if i am in 4x4 there is no problem not a sound i had a auto elect tell me it's machanical,when i'm in 2wd & it happens it sounds like it is trying to engage in to 4x4 but because i select 4x4 by using a shift it's not electrical so can some one tell me what they no is happening thanks

It sounds like your hubs are tying to engage, or more ato the point, aren't staying unlocked.
I turned the car off once while driving (tried to coast as I had a charge light issue) and got this awful wirring noise from the front end and it got louder as i pulled over to stop. When I stated the car it was all good so I tried it again and the same thing happened.

I later worked out that the hubs are locked normaly and they unlock via vacuum I think. when I turned the car off I lost vacuum and the hubs tried to lock.
You should get the hubs checked or the mechanism that unlocks them. Till then you could work out how to diconect the power or vacuum to them and drive it with the hubs engaged.

This maybe to late but the front hubs are keep unlocked by a vacuum (I think from reading the manual) maybe you have a blockage in the vacuum hose or similar.

your vacume is blocked i had the same prob and thats what it was. cost $75 at mitz dealership to fix the prob

Might be a bit late, but check your servo and all ur connections to it mate, happens to me all the time when i go playing in the mud.. Just have to clean out all the mud and crap from it & all the connections.. problem goes away.
