MTR and Crawlers? The odd couple perhaps.

Slunnie,
The MT/R is fairly widely regarded as the best rock crawling commerial tyre right now, the BFG Krawler is the new challenger to this unoffical title.
This has seen a big change from the large numbers that were running Swampers on rock...
So now Interco (who make Super Swamper) have the above tyre as a prototype. Apparently there's only a dozen or so in existence - so don't expect to see them anytime soon - but IMHO it's great to see Interco steping upto the challenge - more tyres to choose from will also hopefully make it cheaper & more readily available for the average rock-punter....

I didn't realise the MTR was so highly regarded, especially considering it's not even marketed as a muddie by GY, let alone being a road radial when compared to bias plys such as the other beast tyres.

Mate the MT/R is NOT marketed as a muddie because it's not really designed to shine as a muddie....The MT/R stands for "Maximum Traction Reinforced"... NOT Mud Terrain radial or other acrynom that might be floating about...
If you have a look at most of the US rock crawling comps you'll see a VERY high portion are running MT/R's....it's not just becasue Goodyear sponsors the events (although that's still part of it)....but they really are highly regarded on rock.....
The MTR is now available in a 40" size also....

Himble if other swampas are anything to go by:
Not speed rated (then again external beadlocks aren't legal either), probably a 8itch to balance, if bias ply, they'll probably shake your fillings when cold and since they are supposed to be a rock tyres - I'd think they'd be very soft which could translate to a short tyrelife onroad.... ;)
Ive had a good run from MTR's as my road tyres, never balanced any of the sets Ive had after fitting to rims, and they come up great, would certainly drive better than a 40" swamper Im sure, radial vs rag, and the MTR is a radial, which is speed rated, etc.
They are also wearing very well according to the US guys, and what I have seen.

Even if the swampa is a radial - I doubt it will be speed rated - none of the existing swampa radial range is currently (AFAIK)....
Sorry wooders, seems to be some confusion, Im not sure if we are talking swampers or MTR's any more....
The thread started on swampers, but the 40" mtr's came up, then the q on the on road performace..... ???

Sorry if I've confused people....
My 2¢:
New Swampa probably = below average on road performance
40" MT/R probably = pretty good on road performance....
