Was just wondering about them in general, like how do you go about attaching a breather line as they're supposed to a sealed unit i.e. don't even change the oil:p (according to the manual) you actually have to split it to drain oil.
I don't have a problem, touch wood, am just curious.:truck:

There should be a breather on the axle somewhere, if there wasn't you would find that you would keep blowing axle or pinion seals. As the temperatures change there is a slight expansion and contraraction of the housing and oil. the breather is there to equalize the pressures inside and outside the housing without oil being spilt.

It is true you have to spilt them to change the fluid, If you ever do you need to add an Anti Friction additive which you must buy though ford or you will Destroy the LSD center.

Thanks guys, I'll just have to have another look but didn't notice any hoses last time (did on my last 2 Paj's).
How strong are the diff's, do they need to have oil changed regularly, as they say not to, but that just doesn't sound right, just me I suppose. I have & do use mine as a proper 4b & occasionally that does mean going through mud & water.

The diffs are as tuff as nails mate, They rekon every 75,000 from what i was told just crack the front cover to drop the oil, and renew.;)

Checked in one of the Gregory's Workshop manuals? Or even tried for a Ford Workshop manual? (sometimes get the OE manuals off the Parent Co Website! In this case that'd be Ford USA!) Worth a look, they often have little snippets of info only found in them! Just like the info you are after?!

Front Dana - 3.5
Rear Ford - 8.8"
The yanks Explorer Forum site got back to me & I got a really good spec's page with absolutely everything in it, but........It's all in bloody horsepower, lbs, feet, miles etc, etc. I've forgotten nearly all of that & I'll have to convert it, somehow???

yeah DANA 35 front
Ford 8.8 rear 31 spline, you won't bust it that's for sure.
I use Penrite Sin 140 gear oil in mine.
The 35 has Limslip 85/140 in it from when I had a leaking pinion seal so i used that to change the front diff oil, otherwise you need to suck it out the filler hole or drop the diff to pull the cover plate so haven't changed that out.
You don't need the Ford friction modifier if you use a LSD gear oil like Penrite Sin.
Ford say it's "sealed for life" When a auto manufacture states this it means around 5 years, as that is what they consider “life”

Almost did it! Was going to put a Detroit E-Z in the front diff cost about U.S $220 off Summit racing. Rear as it’s a LSD you need to get a Carrier Locker I.E The> Detroit Locker bout $520 U.S
I’m looking into the Detroit Rear for my Gutlux ATM, Ill let ya know what I get quoted for the shipping!
31 Spline is the number of Splines the Axle shaft has on it, the morer the better (They are what lock the Axle to the carrier), think the DANA 35 is 28 spline!, You will bust a CV befor the Dana 35 mate!
Cheers.
