G'day fellow yota drivers, I am looking at a power take off for the shorty.

Before I even start to venture down this road I thought I would ask your opinions.

I run the original 5 speed gearbox/transfer. Is it a big job to get one of these babies up and running. Did the 84 model BJ42 even come out with a power take off??? If not can you modify/adapt anything???

Opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't really want a debate regarding PTOs vs electric vs hydraulic, all have their advantages and disadvantages.

Cheers for any help.

The manual for our 1982 40 table top still had a section in it for the PTO winch. I think 1984 was when the first 5-speed box was introduced. AFAIK, there's no difference between the core box and the transfer case between now and then (fifth is an extra casting stuck on the back of the original 4 speed box). There will be a plate on the transfer case where the PTO shaft would normally be attached to: Toyota Land Cruiser Restoration Project, Page 16 (http://www.rzeppa.org/resto/resto16.htm)

I think your pretty right. I have 97 80 series with a pto so if its able to have one, yours would easily as well. i think there is only dramas when your looking at full time 4b gear boxs and transfers etc...

I hope so, would be good to see a 40 series with one set up. I'm wondering if there will be clearance issues with the 6.5 and the other few mods done that may block the way of the shaft to the winch.

Anyone got any pics?

What sort of cost would there be to install a PTO winch, and what sort of load ratings are they available in?

Why go to all the trouble of installing a PTO when you can just bolt on a good electric Warn winch????

mate if you could I would be very appreciative.

You can get em' in all sorts of load ratings, as for costs there was one I missed out on a while back that prob would have cost me a case!! Installation I haven't even gone there yet. Am gonna spend a bit of time surfing the net tonight.

Why go to all the trouble of installing a PTO when you can just bolt on a good electric Warn winch????

You had to ask the question!!!!! :D LOL.......after half an hour I gave up and deleted.....3 times (prob 40 min!). Honestly put very simply the way my shorty is set up a PTO if possible will be a far better set up than an electric in my situation. Yes the installation of the PTO will take a lot longer but I would rather do the PTO set up than change my current set up to accomodate an electric........and yes the warns are great, I had an 8000 pounder on my last shorty and it was a fantastic unit.

Plus I get to play with more levers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Such a simple question SR5 has done my head in trying to explain LOL...........no more questions from you:D

BUT>>>>>>>>>>>if the PTO is a no go then my set up will have to be changed to accommodate a new warn.

hey crawla..

i bought a PTO of some guy who had it on his HJ45 i think.. it came with winch brace, winche, shafts, cable and PTO box..

i had to go to Advanced Trailer Spares to sort out the bracketry to mount it to the chassis rail.. and I also had to get a custom shaft made up (from ATS).

From the info ATS provided about the PTO for the BJ42, it appears to be a 2shaft PTO. The one I got from the hj45 is a 3 peice but it works nicely.

This PTO is a THomas winch, 8,000lb's.. I have a mate in Vic with a Toyota PTO and its heaps smaller and only rated at 6000lb??. I hear he has done his fair share of shear pins pullin 40's up hills. I have managed to pull a 60 up a hill unassisted as well as a SWB MQ Pootrol.

in regards to space issues my only concern for you would be along the chassis rails under the battery tray where it used to live on the passenger side. I have used a bolt from his battery tray for a bracket but im not sure if you still have this. I also had to manipulate the hole in the front crossmember as the brace meant it didnt cleanly go through the hole.

Here are a few pix for ya.
some bits and peices, the PTO box, the shaft (missing a shaft) and actuator cable:

the main shaft bearing, without chassis bracket. with the bracket I had to make different holes to take advantage of the captured nuts inside the chassis rail at that approximate location.

there ya go thats basically it.. I have a pull cable and just drilled a hole in the floor for it.. pull to engage PTO, throw the 4wd transfer in neutral, and select a gear to start winching... just dont forget to disengage winch and drive off or you might bugger your winch/hook/fairlead.

All these pics are on a 1984 BJ42 with 5Spd.

the starter is VERY close to the PTO bracket in this pic, probably 5-10mm to spare:

the last bracket and bearing used to angle the shaft towards the hole in the front crossmember (this is where i think you might have issues fitting):

pic of the winch brace minus winch, this is the most important thing to measure if you are picking upa PTO second hand, some 60# PTO's might fit others might not (i had a mate who discovered this the hard way).

after driving this climb i had to winch the pootrol and a 60 out.. with a foot on the brakes (well 2 feet and hands wedged between the steering wheel, handbrake on)..

iambeefcake.. i notice your PTO is chain driven from the winch.. mine is a uni.. think these are the two different types.. also yours is a 2 peice shaft.. so i reckon you have the proper PTO for a bj42 and I have one from another series that is adapted to suit.

either way its good to see how you mounted your shaft bearings to teh chassis..

cheers!

To be honest yesterday when I took the photos was the closest I've looked at it. It was on the car when I bought it, but it's not free spooling at the moment so it's taken a back seat while i look after a few other things first.

Cheers

Some pics of a genuine Toyots PTO winch that is on eBay showing the PTO unit that bolts onto the 5-speed box.
