View Full Version : 79 Series Landcruiser - Instrument Problem

Hello guys & gurus,
My son recently purchased a 79 Series Landcruiser ute. After fitting a stero unit using the loom adapters so as not to interfere with any of the other electrics the speedo, tacho and odometer now don't work. Weve had the dash apart looking for loose connections and found nothing. Then the bloody things just started working for no other reason than it felt like it. Then it stopped again.
Any ideas where we should start to chase down this problem. And yes we're considering an auto electrician but only as a last resort. He is trying to save his hard earned $.
Many thanks
D.T.

Did you earth the stereo to the body (dash) If you did you will create all sorts of probs with the electrics.

Yes, we checked all the fuses and plugs for a firm connection.
No, we didn't earth the stero unit to the body other than through the loom.
Yes we did all the obvious stuff, is the inobvious that we didn't do apparently.
Still can't find it.
We did have to fix up a dodgy job on the tail lights though. I wonder if there is any connection between the two ? A wiring diagram would be useful.

My suggestion would be to disconect the stereo and then undo the rear light repair and see if one of these are causing the prob. If they are not you know that you then have to search elsewhere. If one or the other is causing the prob you then know that is the only area you need to look at and figure out what is wrong.
Cheers.
Dave.

Did you earth out the light repair to the body rather than through the wiring earth?

Yes we undid everything and the problem still existed. No the lights were not earthed other than through the harness.
And guess what it's working again now for no aparent reason. I spoke with a mechanic yesterday and he said have a look at the harness between the block and the firewall as this sometimes gets oil or water in it. So I'll check that on the weekend. But keep the ideas coming.

Bloody thing is still f***ed. Really starting to give me the sh**s now. Has anyone got a wiring diagram for the 79 Series. The Haynes manuals I've looked in are all around 80 / 75 series or 100 series wagons. Apparently Haynes (AKA Gregory's) don't do a manual for the 79 Series. Even thought their web site list volume 520 as the relevant manual. It's bloody not as far as the body and electrics go.
