My old MK patrol used to to do it every now an then as well, i put it down to maybe water on the leads or alternator or coil or something, cause it never fully stopped, only ran on like half the pots for a while.

will be water on the engine plugs leads etc. made a custom(dodgy) bash plate up and put conveyer belt inside guards and silcone on everything on mine seemed to help but couldnt ever get rid of it altogether just took it easyer in deep water and foot flat to dry it out after

Try this thread out. It is all about keeping water out of your electrical system. It may point you in the right direction. Hope it helps. :thumb:

Drive thru some water at night, then straight away stop, turn off ya lights and look under the bonnet while its idling. Chances are you'll see a spark somewhere.

and what does that mean if that happens

If you can see a spark, you know where your electrical system is shorting! As the electricty takes the easiest route, it will travel across the water. if you can see it sparking from an ignition lead to the block, it would explain why your engine is missing and spluttering. Instead of the spark going down the lead to the end of the spark plug, it is shorting across to the block, giving you no spark on that cylinder!

yeah, your leads might be arcing out, plugs, coil ect. and it doesnt take much condensation to make your dizzy miss fire ect. remote mount coil, get top quality leads (use high temp electrical silicon) and seal the lead to plugs ect. you can even go as far as rubber gloving your dizzy. this is something i have been trying to get right, deep water crossings in a petrol, and i have got it just about solved.

when u say hi temp silcone what do i do with it and when u say seal the leads to the plugs how do i go about that exactly thanks

put a bead around where the plug meets the cap and where the cap meets the lead. also anywhere else you think water could get into the main engine electric system.

so the spark will still go thru the silcone

what do you mean? the silcon is on the outside of leads and plugs ect, to stop water getting in.

As people have said assess how the water is affecting your its usually water in the cap or saprk tracking out. You said that theres no water in the cap are u sure it only needs the slightest sign of water to miss, water will condensate on the inside of the cap. is your cap and your leads still ok? if an insulation boot on either end of the lead is loose or cracked then spark can track out. If the can and/or leads as old/faulty then replace them. wait till night time start car and eyeball the high tension ignition parts u may see a spark track somewhere if not use a trigger spray bottle of water spary a mist of water over the system and try to induce tracking( dont forget to check coil aswell) dont eliminate water in cap cause you cant see a puddle in the dizzy its the fine condensation on the inside of cap that will do it.

Run a fine bead of silicon around base of distributor b4 putting cap on, then as clinton suggested seal lead ends with some silicone too, i have always used silicone spray on the lead ends, (without fail). Good quality/condition lead boots an a bit of silicone spray and you shouldnt miss a beat

As you mentioned to clinton B4 about spark passing the silicone. the silicone is not there to stop the spark passing out it is to stop water getting in if water can pass through then it will conduct spark straight back out.

if you reckon it is not getting to your dizzy what aobut your coil or is one of you leads not the best
