View Full Version : Snorkels (questions regarding)

I have always considered snorkels a bit of a wank - kinda the 4WD equivalent of spoilers on loud and annoying 4 cylinder sports cars.

However, as i am now planning on turboing my 1HZ, it occurs to me that there may be more to them "look at me - I can drive underwater"

Thus I have two specific questions:

1. Do they result in increased intake airflow?

2. What stops water getting into your engine if you're driving through rain?

Any other advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks,
Mark

some have them for the wank factor, but as for your questions

1. dont know how much more intake airflow is acheived due to it being some what restricted when the air goes through the air cleaner but its the clean air that will be an advantage

2. most of the snorkle heads have a water gutter on the rear face of the snorkle which diverts a fair percentage of the water out rather than in to the aircleaner.

question is there mutch point in putting a snorkel on a petty car? as they dont really like the deep water anyway compared to that of a diesel......would it only serve to get cleaner air....and the "wank" factor.........

yeah i know clean air is great for cars and the colder the better for performance i was just wondering by fitting one on eg my v6 extra cab would it actually enable me to go through deeper water???? or if she will still conk out...... dont know alot about deep water craoosings...sorry

being a standard ignition petrol engine with exposed coil packs, there is a limit to the water you could cross...

Snorkles are the sheit though

or a bent rod. But i turboed my 1HZ and put a safari snorel on it, cause mine was a poverty pack with no snorkel. You can still feel the air getting sucked in through the ram when its blood is up on a dune. But i heard that a ram head is equivelant to 2-3 psi of boost at 100km/h. Any one know if safari can make a mirror on a snorkel? (for example, a lefthand side snorkel for my 75, cause dual snorkels look even meaner.)

yeh i wanted to go dual snorkels and dual three inch stacks, no muffler with rain caps. But i fitted my snorkel before i even thought of turbo-ing the rig. Wish i didnt now.

Here's just a few threads on similar topics that I found on the forum! They discuss how/why snorkels work, river crossing, keeping everything water tight etc. Have a read thru, you will find a heap of useful information!

1. Do they result in increased intake airflow?

Depends on the snorkel design and plumbing, and what of the OEM plumbing gets removed. I have heard of snorkels both reducing and increasing intake restriction. Have a read HERE. (http://www.lcool.org/technical/120_series/snorkel/snorkel_performance.html)

Don't get sucked into thinking that the ram head will induce a positive pressure in the snorkel, as you need to be travelling at a speed much greater than your four wheel drive will manage before that happens!

2. What stops water getting into your engine if you're driving through rain?

Surely if it's going to raise the level of which water WILL get sucked into the motor, it would be of some piece of mind, at the least? It might be the difference between driving home or having Bob's towing drive you home...

There's a bloke in our club with a v6 prado that sucked in water and buggered his motor. Might have been a different story with a snorkel.

1. Dunno, yea maybe.

2. Never had a problem

Any other advantages/disadvantages? Yep, insurance really. 400 dollars for a snorkel, how much is a motor rebuild gonna cost you.

Sometimes it's quicker to do the search and post the links, rather than try and rewrite all the info that has been posted!

I put an air teck on my 80 after getting muddy water in my air box. That was to close for comfort. First thing i noticed was that it had better pick up in 3rd gear and 4th. 2nd was that it used less petrol on the highway. not a massive amount but about 1.5l per 100kys. So the main thing is less stess when i get to water.

I felt similar to you re snorkels, till a mate bought me a safari one for my bday.
Well after I had fitted it, the performance was noticably better.
for clean air, cooler air, and the advantage of possible water crossings, I was wondering why I didnt do it sooner.

was on my Ln106 lux

Clean Air (Air intakes down low pick up more & heavier dirt & dust)
Option of fitting a cyclone/centrifugal precleaner in heavy dust.
Cool Air - its not out of the engine bay
Ram effect - neglible in most cases
Rain - most RAM's are self draining.
Deep Water - SAVES YOUR ENGINES ARSE
Looks - Good
Protects - your guards - I've ran over a few branches and had them kick into the snorkel without a mark - saved the panels !!!!

just get one they are fairly cheap and clean air is better for your motr and then if you ever come across a water crossing you dont have to think in the back of your head with i blow it up or stuff like that and it will give your car a better look as well
