A bloke at a 4WD shop here in Vic told me that the spec for gearbox oil for an 80 series is wrong, and that they run better on 75/80 Penrite rather than the 85/90 standard spec.

Anyone else heard of this?

I have also been told that i was reccomended to use the castrol vmx80 or something like that. The 85/90 is aparently to thick and people have trouble changing down to second when cold

I use 75/90 in mine and it changes fine, one bloke told me to use Dextron 3 automatic fluid instead of gear oil. Bit to light for me though as if the synchros are stuffed light oil will only help the bearings die quicker in my book. contrary to popular belief i think toyota would test their product enough to work out the best oil grade for it.
