G'Day guys, just wondering if you can swap front difft with rear diff in the old FJ40 SWB. I have a rear CIG locka a would much rather put it in the front. I know this prob sounds like a stupid question but i hve never done it before.
Cheers in advance.:D

You can swap them end for end, as there both the same. 60 diffs are the same, and can be placed in the back. Good cheap option is always to swap the front for the back, because the front has far less wear and tear on it.
Id rather have a cig in the back, than the front, but I took mine out after a week, after I smashed it to lil bits….. if your going to have it out, try and giit a locker for the front, because if you smash it, its a pita to take out-ie cvs, huds need breakin down etc etc..

if you changed from front to rear wouldent the front crown wheel be then running on the off face? or do when front diff is fitted to the front run on the off face anyways?

the pinion will run on the crown wheel so the teeth will put pressure on the correct side of the C/Wheel, if you change the diff from front to back you are rotating the diff 180degres thus the origional front diff is now running on the side of the crown wheel teeth that are not as strong, think its refered to as the run side and the lay side, I'll try to get pics to explain better than my dribble

vendetta.......I may be wrong (it has happened at least once before), I cant find pics that show what I mean, I may be mixed up with the rotation, but either way the front diff would run fine on the off side of the crown wheel due to less constant stress eg highway speeds. I would not surgest using the welded diff center in the front though, it would be like driving a bulldozer, but in the end its all up to you
cheers

I like bulldozers:thumb: it would be ok off road, just like a air locka ect, they do like to pull and take some adjusting to compared to open centre. prob wont do it though basically for fear of too much power up front.... allthough i do change my mind ever 15 mins....:D

Now ya got us thinking. Im going to get back to you on this lol.
leave the welded diff in the rear, its going to be a pain in the arse if its in the front, and you will hate it.
Work on saving up and placing a 'real' locker in the front, while leaving a welded one in the back.

I'm with Reddo Vandetta, I reckon your gonna hate a welded front diff in the long run.............my 2 cents would be to leave the welded in the rear and buy a proper locka for the front.

Yeah prob will leave it in the rear, might get a mechanical locker for the front after i get the suspension done.
Cheers
