I have a 95 RV6 4Runner. Have just enjoyed four awesome days up in the Oxley Wild River National park. On my way home down the Pacific Hwy my engine began to miss terribly especially going up hills. I managed to get home ok but it runs shocking. I was driving it again today and as i took off from the lights there was a thud from underneath which seem to come from just under the drivers side floor. I thought a stick had wedged itself up so pulled over but found nothing. All was fine for another 15km and then it happened again. Both times from moving off the mark at lights. When i arrrived home i had a thourough investigation but found nothing visible. I am concerned I have done some internal damage. It has only happened twice in 25km and apart from running a rough/missing, which i'm getting looked at, it seems to be ok. Oil and temp is fine. Can anyone give me an idea what this could be.

Have you had a look at the cente bearing on the rear tail shaft? Just grab the shaft and give it a shake, it will be obvious if it's shot.

Or maybe the trans case mounts or even the cross member?? Check around down there for any loose or broken mounts or bolts etc, rattle the uni joints, gear selectors, drive shafts and check anything that rattles or moves oddly! May even be summut in the front hubs or brakes area, the noise can often be carried by things like torsion bars or springs from the front axle area into a thud or thump that you can feel/hear under your feet. Can you get your other half to sit in the passenger seat while you go for another drive and see if you can do it again?? Other 1/2 might feel/hear it with a better idea as to location! Give it a go!

Hi, I had a 92 4Runner had a similar problem ( sounds like) missing and lacked power, I spoke to the toyota dealer and found that there was a factory recall, on the V6. Apparently the engines were assembled with the incorrect sealant, which reacted with the alloy heads and caused the heads/Block to be eaten away, the problem presents itself with the engine running rough and miss firing.
Toyota on the other hand initally denied this and ended up replacing the engine completly.
Cheers
