What have poeple done to reduce in cab noise in their GQ's?
My ears hum for quite a while after a long drive.
Gearbox noises aside, my LWB GQ is pretty noisy at the speed limit along the highways, eg: wind noise mostly and cabin hum.
Also I binned the under bonnet liner cos got very wet and was drooping all over the engine one day, but thats another story.
Anyone had success in reducing the noise? What things contributed to it? eg: door seals?
cheers, sudso

Easy enough to resolve Sudso, it just took about 20 years playing with rifles and loud cars and loud music, then another 10 years or so with Naval Gunfire Support and ships engine room low frequency noises followed by another 10 or so years working in and around Power Stations and Hydro Electric Generators etc. Reduced the noise I can hear in the Patrol down to almost nothing!! Had to put amplifiers in to hear the UHF & HF Radios!
My windows NEVER make any wind noise, neither do the doors, or even that clu-unk that everyone else complains about when the door hinges are dry. And who has rattly squeaky back doors, none of mine have ever done that! Induction noise from the snorkel, Nup! Engine noise from under the bonnet, Nup, even when I took the sound suppression panel out. Turbo noise, well I do get a little turbo whistle, or is that the high pitched whistle that goes with the Tinnitus?!
Now Tinnitus and other 'head noise' is whole difrent game!! On good days it's only just the equivalent of a high powered chainsaw running full bore about 3 inches off each ear! And you wonder why I have headaches?! I'd really like a way of getting some sound deadener on that!

I've got a bit of industrial deafness too but its still too noisy for me.
Yeah my 2 front windows make a fair bit of wind noise. I think the rubber supplier in the mount sells baily channel material. Every little bit of noise reduction will help:)

Bailey channels and door seals are a common problem with Patrols ( and pretty much any other car out there ) so that would be a good place to start. There are a few places around who sell fire retardant firewall deadener sheets which would help a great deal. If you are serious about it, I'd suggest doing what I did to my lux. Remove the entire interior, carpet and all ( not the dash ) and cover the entire floor in brush on sound deadener, let that cure overnight. Lay a roll of tar based, aluminium backed sound deadening sheet over that ( i used flashtac and it worked well for the price but there are better options available ) you can do the same to your inner doors. With that and the wind noise taken out you will have a very quiet cabin and is also well insulated

When I bought mine it had the vinyl interior. I installed some carpets (tru-fit moulded) straight over the vinyl and it made a big difference to the noise level, but I reckon do what FourXfour did. Might even do it myself one day.

had the same prob! got some sound deadning matting from a mate who uses it on boats for enginerooms. pulled up the front carpet and laid it on the floors and over the hump. some sort of heavy rubber with a wide faberic on one side and alfoil on the other anyway works a treat and keeps the heat from the trany away too. sorry i don't know what the stuff is call but you can buy it from good boat shops!

I had a single cab Triton 4by a few years ago. The cabin noise was a lot worse than the Patrol. Had ringing in my ears for hours after a 3 hour drive:crazy: Coulda been the big stereo turned up to drown out the cabin noise that did it though lol.

What are bailey channels?
I recently covered my rear wheel arches up to the window sills with the sick on aluminium backed tar sound deadening mat from jaycar.
I noticed a slight improvement in road noise from the rear (standard they have NO sound deadening in the rear at all.
There is however ALOT of windnoise coming from the rear sliding windows and through the doors.
The GQ also has thin glass windows compared to say a GU or 100 series. This also is where alot of road noise will come through.
Next thing I'm going to sound deaden are my doors - I reckon it'll make a huge improvement. I'm just going use the stick on jaycar stuff because it does do the job and I dont want to go overboard with the GQ hinges known to be pretty crap. Mine aren't sagged... yet.
I've also noticed the roof could do with some insulation but you'd really want to use the high quality stuff (like dynamat) for that.
My series 2 has more sound deadening than the series 1 nuuuur :p but its only that compound carpet fibre stuff. It works but it doesnt really retard heat or mechanical drone.

anyone know where to get the heat shield from?
My GQ is noisy as well but the heat that comes up through the floor is ridiculous on oa hot day.:(
It has the vynil floor but i removed all the underlay as it had all started to rot.
Any suggestions for suppliers on the GC?

Thats what I do, with the new mud tyres the radio distorts before the road noise is overcome. Need a better head unit
