A mechanic has told me not to waste my money on a set of extractors but to just put a bigger exhaust onto the original manifold . He claims the results are about the same as extractors but without the cost. He said it doesnt work on petrols but does on diesels. Has anyone done this or heard any thing about it? what were the results? Like he said if you dont like it and dont think it works then all that is lost is a few feet of pipe and you can put the extractors on anyway. Though he is adamant that you wont tell much differance between the two systems once its done to a 1HZ

i got told the same thing so just went the 2.5 straight thru without the extractors, noticed an improvement, tho feels like a slug again these days, but the other day i drove a 1hz 80 series which felt quite a bit faster than i thought it should, when i opened the bonnet it had a set of extractors as well as the exhaust, so if ya got the $$$ might pay off just to do the lot

not sure but it did have the bracket still on it where a sprintex supercharger used to be mounted and the intake pipe that goes over the top of the rocker cover had sprintex stamped on it, shame it was removed before i got to drive it

I reckon your mechanic is probably pretty right, I doubt the extractors *alone* contribute that much (well they do add heat and noise :D ) as most people will upgrade the exhaust system at the same. And as he says if you want extractors (or even a turbo ;) ) later you already have the exhaust system fitted.

The main muffler in front of the rear axle is the restrictive bit.

I have fitted extractors to my 1hz and have noticed a mared improvement and have been told by a exhaust place that a open system wil impriove it more
