I'm still on the hunt for my next fourby. My 89 Pajero is getting a bit tired. The problem is I have little cash to spend. I've found a 1991 4Runner which is in top condition, almost perfect. It's only got 128,000 k's on the dial. Don't know if they're genuine k's but judging by the rest of the car, I would say it's genuine mileage.
I've heard the 4Runner is under powered but can't be worse than the V6 Pajero.
Can anyone offer me any info on the 4Runner or can they direct me to somewhere on the web where I can get some reviews etc? I've looked at several sites like Carpoint, Carsales and Drive but they have nothing.
Cheers

G-day mate, the 4runner come out with 3 engines as far as I know, the 22r which is a 2.4Litre petrol, the 3L which is a 2.8L diesel, and a V6. both the 3L and the 22R are very reliable motors in my opinions but are known for being pretty slow, what engine does the one your looking at have? 128K is not many K's for either the 22R or the 3L and if the rest of the car looks like its in pretty good condition then chances are that they are genuine K's, 4 runners dont age very well and really show their age quite quickly. the V6 motor ive been told from reliable sources is one of toyotas biggest stuff ups it is a bloody thirsty motor and renowned for burning a lot of oil and just generally being a pain in the butt, especially if they havent had regular servicing. but saying all of that my brother in law has one and loves it, and im sure you'll find heaps of people on this site who love them, here are a few pros and cons....in my opinion,
pros: cheap to fix, easy to find parts, reliable, reasonably priced, tuff.
cons: very slow, quite basic inside, paintwork prone to fading, electric rear window prone to breaking.
there is a website with more info on that will help you, i cant remember it but i'll try and post it here shortly.

The V6 is a bit of a shocker, it has roughly the same power and torque figures as a 2.7 Hilux, so you've basically got the power of a four with the thirst of an eight. It does move along pretty well, if you're happy to rev it.
From the B pillar forward, it's all Hilux, so you know it's tough ;), the rear window does need regular treatments of silicon spray on the guides to keep it smooth.
If you look after them (I didn't), they're very reliable, and with F&R lockers, very impressive offroad.

Many thanks for your replies. I might move on and look for something else. I might stick with a later model Pajero.

Giday Thread,
The largest user of energy for the v6 donk is the bloody great static fan that is on it. When the fan's coupling gets a bit old, it tends to bind, so the engine starts to slave when accelerating.
I got rid of it and put in a thermal electric fan and thermostat which are available from Repco. This made a very noticable increase in both acceleration and fuel consumption.
Hope this helps abit.

Mate, I had a 2.8 diesel 92 model. I bought it with 130 000 kms on the clock and traded it in on a 100 series at 330 000kms. they are the best balanced mid sized truck you can get. Built Hilux tuff with all the gear available on the market. Mine had been all over Qld including Cape York. Apart from fitting bars, snorkle, roof rack, cargo barrier, duel batts and air lockers and air con, the only thig it cost me was a fuel pump rebuild at 300 000km, replacement of the original injectors and a radiator repair.

They were also released with the 2L 2.4l diesel. Its a piece of crap, dont bother. A mate had the 22R version and after had the engine rebuilt, it was actually pretty good, but still used a fair bit of fuel. Sprinterboy has a 3L 2.8l with DTS turbo kit, it goes pretty well.

my runner was originally the v6, ended up kicking the bucket with 398,000 on the clock and never opened, the only trouble i had (bought @ 302,000) was the air flow meter being damaged when the dodgy gas system that was fitted would backfire.
the best thing you can do to the v6 is get a decent exhaust fitted, as standard the drivers side manifold runs back and over the bellhousing to join to the other side, it's highly restrictive! by fitting a set of extractors you can truly notice the power and economy gains.
it never used oil, was a little thirsty but what early nineties v6 wasn't
