i want to turbo my 2h iam getting new rings rods and pistons do ihave to get turbo model ones or use the same that is in it and also are the heads the same or do you need a turbo head as well

The 2H and the factory turbo 12HT are very different, IDI vs DI for a start.

You'd need head, injectors, lines, pistons, etc, etc.

i turboed an old 2H that was in good nick!

then i killed it.

turbo, plus new(ish) recon motor = more $$ than a 6.2 chev...

if i had my time (and money) again i would have gone for a chev conversion.

this is just my personal experience, just sharing

i fitted a turbo to mine about a year after i rebuilt it. i run around 9psi and flog it most of the time! but i allways warm up and idle down and i service it every 5000km! i love it, should have done it earlier. me and another machanic at work fitted in about 6hour. i picked up my ARB turbo kit for $1000 with a rebuilt turbo!

a turbo 2H is shit hot and goes real good with an auto box

Had a 2H in my 85 Troopie. Couldn't kill it with a stick until it got to 800,000km's. Not much power but as reliable as. When stripped down and inspected (for a rebuild) it was shot- head, crank, cam, rockers etc etc. Contacted Toyota, the theoretical max design "lifespan" was about 800,000km as the hardening is worn through by then and so on. The only resusable part in mine was the block. Was I unhappy? No, thats a damm marathon for any Jap motor.

Ok it wasn't turbo but thats what a well maintained 2H is capable of, so they told me. A low blow turbo would have been great but check ya motor out, The Toyota guys told me the pre combustion chambers in the head crack out badly if the motor is stressed with over fueling etc via an aftermarket turbo.

What did i do? Plopped a 3F on LPG for nix into it. It's still going strong. :thumb:

A standard 2H is good enough I don't know why a lot of people are obsessed with the power craze when you don't need it unless you're towing a road train at 120tons, its just over kill some of the stuff i read in this forum.

"Good Enough" is a relative term dependent on what you want to do with it, your purchase budget. maintainence skills and money.

The 2H is a great motor but 2nd gear, 25kph up the Bells Line of Road? If you can give it a helping hand and have the cash to do so and pay for any consequences, go for it.

Having said that, old school diesels are "funny" beasts. Each motor seems to have a point where its happy and long lived. Some can safely be up-rated, others not. I personally think its a function of bore Vs stroke, compression, fuel rating and final gearing but I really don't know why, maybe an engineer can explain it.

i gave mine a gut full of water and bent 2 conrods(im an idiot for not haveing a snorkle and darn 75'series drawing air for right behind the head light. it got rebuilt 3years ago. i told the engine joint that rebuilt it that i was planing on turboing it in the future. replaced, all bearing, bent rods,pistons,rings,seals, and what ever else needed doing. all parts were aftermarket! cant remember what else now anyway, my head had a few small cracks but it was pressure tested and was deemed all good. as for changing anything when i fitted the turbo... turbo oil drain into sump(had to punch a hole in the sump as high as possible and bronze a fitting in, change exhaust piping, change intake piping, put in oil supply to turbo(got mine from the engine oil cooler), change fuel ,boost ,timing settings.
